Hi there guys,

Just wanted to know ifthe stock S15 Silvia alternator is ok with running the following: (btw its a 80A unit)

Alpine V Monoblock 1000w RMS @ 2ohm

Alpine V4ch Amplifier 4 x 100w RMS @ 4ohm

Cheers

Farah

so much more then just the alternator to figure into the equation, wire sizes, other auto accessories, age of battery, type of battery, etc etc etc..

Other Auto Accessories:

Viper Car Alarm 5101

Soundstream 1 Farad Capacitor

Battery is the top range Kmart battery i think its 550 something i think....Brand new

Type R splits at the front, type r 6x9's at the back

Type X 10Inch sub

Battery negative wire i will change from 4 gauge to 0 gauge so assume 0 gauge.

Power wires to amps will be 0-2 gauge wiring.

Speaker wire is 12gauge

I jsut dont want my alternator to die on me...If it is too much i could always run the monoblock at 750w RMS......

Cheers

Other Auto Accessories:

Viper Car Alarm 5101

Soundstream 1 Farad Capacitor Yep fine for 1k watts of system power

Battery is the top range Kmart battery i think its 550 something i think....Brand new NO SUCH Item...as KMART TOP OF THE RANGE

Type R splits at the front, type r 6x9's at the back

Type X 10Inch sub

Battery negative wire i will change from 4 gauge to 0 gauge so assume 0 gauge. YES ,Engine ground as well

Power wires to amps will be 0-2 gauge wiring. YES, Fuse at battery ????

Speaker wire is 12gauge, doesn't matter much unless you run a long stretch of it. 12ga is fine

Guys

really it can get extremely expensive to upgrade or rewind the old alternator. also upgrade the wire from the battery to the Positive pole of the alternator in 4Ga(good for about 150amps max) , and ground the case as well with 4 ga

don't expect to sit in the park with the engine off blasting tunes unless you want to walk home, even for a few as little as 10 min might kill it

and your lights will dim on big bass and possibly the Computer will get wonky if the voltage gets to low. engine misfires or stalls are common on low voltage

if you run A/C,Lights, Fan, etc you might have some issues if you like the music loud. but in most cases you can get by with a bit of common sense

short trips with tunes up will kill your battery, not able to charge back up, and not good for it to deep cycle over and over either.

don't overlook your battery terminals either !!!

I would ditch the battery for a much better one, odyssey or yellow top, AGM or spiral wound gel battery with 850cca or better

ah k i see :) thankyou for all the help mate. Would it be more benifital to run my sub at 750w rms instead of the full 1000w rms for the sake of the alternator?

It's not that simple.. lol

your amp current might still be pretty healthy at 750watts. depending on the power efficiency , class D draws less in the form of wasted heat in most cases.

I use my stock R34 Alternator with nearly 3000 watts of power (@ 1 ohm )to the stereo and heaps of other gadgets to run, neons,LED's LCD's etc , and I do like it loud,,,lol so it can work if your careful

either way update the wires to 0ga and grounds fixed up, new decent battery, maybe a additional capacitor next and you should be ok if you drive your car often and never run it flat . won't be optimum but from there it gets lots more expensive, sound deadener to lower the noise floor, then you won't have to turn it up so loud to hear it.

ok mate cheers for that, 1 last question...though is type x 10inch @ 1000w rms overkill? would a type R with a 500w rms monoblock be sufficient/loud/bass(i) enough...what are your thoughts...? Also thoughts on the type R splits and type R 6 x 9s? thanks alot mate

I think Alpine is overrated but sells well, decent stuff ... with pretty blue lights...lol(my old demo car was Alpine V Powered car 5 amps 15 speakers yadda yadda, 145db, broken windows..lol, subs on fire belting out smoke from the voice coils..lol

a 10" is fine to belt out over 130db at least... in a small car it will still pound hard with a good box

1000 watts, hell I could use 10,000 but thats just me..lol I like it loud and clear..lol

most of the time a few hundred watts is enough, build a proper tuned box , use less power to make the same or better sound

I could make a 6 inch or 8 smoke a 12" sub in a bad box, used to demo a dual 6 box next to a 15" box, ceiling tiles would fall down with 20 watt amp. people thought it was the 15" box.. wrong it was the dual 6" in a 7th order bandpass box(dual reflex box) not much bigger then a boot(shoe) box

I'm sick of Type R stuff..lol .... there are lots of better choices , some much cheaper too..?

6x9 is rubbish ,,,,, any brand 6 x9 !!! build a mount for 6.5 splits instead

oh god dont talk to me about 7th order filters. im doing electrical engineering at uni and oen subject is all abotu control systems and frikn nth order filters etc GRRR

ahha reason i was saying TYPE R is i can get cost price at jbhifi, i was goign to buy the 12inch vented box that alpine supplies with a 12inch type r sub, 500w rms monoblock V12, and the 4ch with 100rms in each channel going to front splits, guess i could get some rear splits as well...

i like it loud to though...real loud hopefully this system will do! in terms of other brands etc....as long as its sold at jb hi fi ahha

Cheers

    • Hope you aren't too sore after that one, might take a day or 2 to notice yet and I guess it is a loooooong drive home. On the bright side, tube frame front end is a thing at superlap, right?

    • The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same. There are plenty of discussions on here about this issue from al the many years of people wanting a cheap/accessible option. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/ https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/
    • Yeah dunno why johhny posted that here with no context, just post on FB/insta bro where he put it up?  Laine had an off at T4 during Thurs prac, he's ok, car is less than perfect, they are done for the weekend, he can fill in the rest. Bando also binned it like 100m up the road.
    • I feel there must have been a FB/insta post and the weekend did not start well at all I hope everyone is all okay
