Hi ladies

I couldn't find an intro post section, but I thought I'd say hello after buying a pretty schmick R34 GTR from a fellow SAU member Bakes :P

I've had the car for about 6 weeks now and am getting familiar with it. Its my first Nissan, after a string of Subarus/Holdens/Alfas. I'll have to get around to changing my user name as well (do I ask the moderators?)

Usually after buying a car, I've got an idea on what I'm going to do to "make it mine", but it's one of the first times that I'm not sure what to do next.....Che did an amazing job getting the car to look sensational (including the engine bay), and it feels perfectly set up for road use. I think I'd like to source some new V Spec II pedals for it, and I'm a bit worried about the pods attracting attention if I get some police attention. Apart from that I suppose I'll just enjoy it for a while. Hopefully the search for more power won't take over in the future....

Here's some pics from today (the only thing I didn't transfer was the NSW plates Che had "R34GTR" - I couldn't bring myself to pay the NSW Govt $440 a year to own them sadly). I sold my rexie to make way for the GTR and I have to say there were mixed emotions :)

Anyway, I'm stuck up in Coffs Harbour, and would love to get involved in some events, or track days - might head to the NSW section for some advice.

Cheers

Shaun

I'm happy you've got a lovely car but...

but...

but...

don't you feel sorry for Bakes?

LOL, poor bugga. The consolation prize for Bakes, is that I'll look after it every bit as well as he did.

I'm sure that will make him sleep at night............. or not!

congrats shaun! it's a minter.

are the mixed emotions still lingering now that you've got this car?

yeah, still love my rexies. Back to back comparison between the GTR and the STi are interesting. My Subaru had a chip/exhaust/tune (about 180kwatw) + AP brakes/Tein SS and rims + clear blinkers. Other than that, it was stock, had 78 original kms, and weighed in at 1295kg. I think it was in about as good condition as Bake's (apart from the engine bay looking standard).

The GTR has 300kwatw and feels generally slower in daily driving, must be due to later spool up. But...as soon as you wind the GTR up, I've soon learnt that I need more road to play :P The rexies gearing is really short, but it feels like the GTR will pull well beyond 200.

wat year model is that sti ? i love those ones !

One of the 400 Version 6 MY00 STi's. They came out here in 1999 after 400 of the 2 door STi's were sold. They were Aus delivered and sold for about $63K from the dealer.

You probably won't have to do anything as Bakes has done it all.

Check out his Turbo Build up thread and you will see.

1 of the nicest R34 GTR's I have seen.

Welldone!

ohhh man i miss this car... lots and lots of good memories though.. hope it brings you as much fun as it had brought bakes.. if you want to improve a few things, a good place to start will be some more castor at the front and less camber at the rear, , maybe a bit more toe out at the rear aswell.... it feels very sketchy under hard brakes.. rear end all jittery and unstable.. other than that it is a really well sorted street car.

i was in the process of designing an enclosure for the pods but with you umm-ing and uhhh-ing about the buying the car bakes didnt want me tinkering with it.. having said that, bakes had never ever been pulled over in it.. it commands too much respect.. we drove past 5 hwy patrols on one occasion and got all smiles.. great car.

terry... you should see what bakes is driving now.... youd really feel sorry for him then :P but hes happy with it and it suits his purpose at the moment.. hes happy to be able to use his car more now and not having it sitting in the garage.

All's well then Linton. I'm aware that both of you had pored many man hours over making that car one of the best in in the country.

We know though that beyond godzilla thoughts/projects, priorities take over.

In between my 2 GT-Rs I had 2 Preludes & a Beemer. No complaints either.

yes all is well... bakes knows that at this current stage in his life, cars just arent a priority... getting 2 kids in and out safely and being able to pack up and go away for a weekend is more important to him than having 300kw... it is a shame though as no GTR will ever be the same..

had he kept it until next year, i seriously would have considered buying it, but he just needed to move on... he was super stressing about it and that started to eat at him and he couldnt enjoy it the way it was meant to be enjoyed... then when tyre kickers came round he got really worried that he wouldnt be able to sell it for the amount it was worth.... so he feels much much better now that its with someone else and hes moved on.

heres some more parting shots from when he had it.

I wondered about the relevance of this panel :( I was going to try and source a carbon fibre radiator diversion plate like the Garage Defend one - maybe you can put your monicker on it if we catch up in the future.

Linton, If you get keen in the next few years give me a bell. It's likely that the car will be in "stasis" as I've got 3 little kiddies and don't get a lot of opportunities to rack up the km's. I suspect it may do 3-5,000 km's/year, and a track day would be nice (although the chances of this are small)

Anyway, anyone know where I can source some new V Spec II pedals?

Cheers

Shaun

Addit: I'm not sure why my photos of my rexie have dissappeared from the opening post, hope they weren't nuked by a mod :)

haha i had a piece of carbon fibre left over so i put it there.. bit of work went into that little panel.. haha.. no seriously.. took me the better part of a saturday... please dont throw it out.. i will be happy to have it back if you change to a garage defend one... ill be starting to play with moulded c/f in the near future so maybe i make you a real grage debris one.

    • Given you're running a 2.8 and my 2.5 is not really like for like, I suspect there could be a bit more timing you could give it. What is the kW yield per degree you're putting through it? Here's my E85 map to give you an idea, where it was I could still get another 3~4kW per degree thrown at it.
    • It turns out that Setrab make a fan specifically for the oil cooler which is great and I've installed it with minimal swearing. I removed my 2x 12in push fans from the front of my aircon condenser and wired them into this. My main thermo fans kick on when I use the aircon anyway and would effectively already be working as puller fans through the condensor which is infront of the rad. The push fans (understandably) didn't really do much in the config they were previously in so now they're out. Now we're on to the "Oil fan doesn't really do much either!". Yes I'll duct it next if it does nothing in heavy use which it shouldn't. But hey, the object exists and fits great and is cool. Let me have this. The car is still in the "do my fittings leak oil now? do my wheels actually rub?" phase. I did a spirited drive on them and didn't hear or feel anything. Then I got back home and noticed there were grind marks on the inside of the rims, though I couldn't see where they were touching I got out the grinder and attacked the suspects. Note: I do not know how to use a grinder. Then I realised I had dragged my new rims across my concrete driveway before I did this drive. I didn't think I had damage at that time when I briefly looked...... but remembered this occurred after I did all the angle grinding. The grinding on the wheels in some very specific spots. It's not around the whole rim for example, which lines up with dragging it across concrete more than hitting a suspension component for even 1 full rotation. So everything is currently painted and taped up and I need to test it some more to see if it really IS rubbing, but from inside the car it doesn't feel like it is. In other news I attempted to do a before and after comparison of the heads/cam upgrade thing. Dynos lie, everything is in different measurements. Here is the data from the sandown back straight. Car go faster than before. Vroom vroom.
    • Here's my base ignition. +3 correction to redline when shooting water/meth which is always on. Looking at my old ignition table, I should be able to add 1-2 degree's next time I'm on the dyno.  Let me know your thoughts.
    • Given what I know now - same haha, but this was 12 years ago with second hand 740cc Nismo injectors in my S15 daily, I was too busy hunting elsewhere for the issue to even look at the injectors, running through some cleaner was a happy coincidence haha
