Hello all,

I recently picked up my car 2 weeks ago and its about to clock over its first service.

I've been looking at helmets and do not want to go nuts, as this is to replace my old one and it may be used once a month.

I have seen some shoei, arai and agv ones on ebay and motorsport websites for <$600

take these for example, they don't state if they are AS1698 standards

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/AGV-Stealth-Griffo-...=item4ceef27df6

one would assume that helmets like shoei, arai, agv etc would comply with Australian Standards...?

Where did people purchase their helmets from, any recommendations sub $600 or would you advise other.

please don't state, you get what you pay for, I get it.

cheers

Adrian

as tempting as it is to buy online to save some cash the most important thing with a helmet is the fit. it's by far the most important. it doesn't matter if it's the best made helmet ever if it's not the exact right size and fit for your head it won't work as intended. I guess you can always go try some on at your local shop and then once you've found the exact size and type you want stooge them and go order it online and save money that way. but yeah, basic message is fit is the most important aspect.

Agreed with the proper fit.

Be aware there are different standards for helmets. Most of the helmets sold around here meet Australian standards, made for motorbikes.

The better standard is a proper motorsport helmet. For some reason I believe they are illegal for the roads, but they are much stronger. They are tested with 3 or 4 different impact methods, instead of just one, and are also fireproof. The easiest way to tell them apart is motorsport helmets usually have a smaller visor gap.

i just purchased a helmet from a motorcycle store it meets aus standard for helmets 1698 for $95.00 its a m2r but its old stock manufactured in 2006 so sold at a discount.its more of a road bike helmet than dirtbike

Its for the upcoming deca so dont think i will be getting up to any great speed needing to spend a fortune.

its a common misconception that stronger is better. What stronger actually means is more force transferred to the head and brain than energy absorbed in the helmet.

also your comments about the Australian standards are incorrect:

AS/NZS 1698:2006

Australian/New Zealand Standard™

Protective helmets for vehicle users

2 OBJECTIVE

The objective of this Standard is to provide motor cyclists and racing car drivers with

helmets that provide protection against, and minimize the severity of, head injury from

hazards associated with motor cycle riding or motor vehicle racing.

    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
    • So, now all you need to do is connect the 2 or 3x 12v feeds into the unit to permanent 12v, ACC 12V and IGN 12V that you can find in the spot behind the stereo, and the earth, and then it will switch on with the car.
