Hi Guys,

This is the first time I have used anything like this, I am considering purchasing a 1993 GTR VSPEC II, its currently being sold at a Dealer, It has traveled 68k, the asking price is 27k, I am wondering what are the main things to look at regarding one of these cars, having never owned a Skyline before. My current wheels are a Honda Vti-s Jazz, and I am looking at possibly a trade in on this vehicle.

Any help in what is the most important thing to check and look for would be Highly Appreciated.

Regards Darren Sydney :)

i don't know specifically to do with gtr's what the first thing you should check is but the things i looked for on my car is:

(not sure how much you know so i'll tell you basics)

are the K's Genuine? look up an R32 GTR Vspec 2 and see what sort of dash instruments they come with (i think it's a NISMO 320 kph speedo and all other gauges match on the cluster) if this is right check that all the numbers in the odometer are perfectly in line) provided these are right the K's would appear genuine.

i would get your eye along the sides of the car both sides and see the crease that runs the length of the car have no kinks and things (could have been in a bad accident)

lift up the carpet in the boot and see if there are any abnormal welds from a repair from a rear end collision.

look under the car and see if the body is straight (no kinks or anything)

get a mate to stand behind the car while it's running and warm and rev it pretty hard (5-6000 rpm and back off the throttle suddenly) (make sure it's warm) so floor it till 5000 and back off (repeat numerous times) and see if there is any smoke. Blue is burning oil and might mean the piston rings are going. white is burning antifreeze so coolant is somehow getting into the engine cylinder and burning. black is unburnt fuel (black is quite normal and safe. might need a bit of a tune (you may get small flames if this is the case :) which is AWESOME if you ask me :) )

hope any of these ideas help.

also, make sure you take it for a few good test drives before buying.

the first few revs while it's warming up you should expect it to spit out water and black sooty stuff out the exhaust. this is condensation removing carbon in the catalytic converter and spitting it on the ground.

i would also ease up to pinning the throttle and backing off. (ie. don't start it, let it idle till it's warm and then pin it to 6000. i'd make the first few to 3000 and then move up a bit.

Hi Samuel,

Thanks for the info, will be heading out there tomorrow to take a look at it, will really go over the thing with a fine tooth comb, as only seeing the photo's on their site, it looks ok but can be deceiving in the real world, the car is an Import and was Complied late last year, I will include their link for your perusal, they say its completely unmodified standard factory VSPEC II.

another thing i'd ask is how long they've had it. (they might lie but also might not) if they've had it for a year (unlikely but there's a 32 gtr in sa that's been for sale for a couple of years) then you know the price is too high or it could have problems. if it has been there for a short ammount of time then it might be a bargain!

it looks nice though. and i hope all goes very well. good luck

OHH and another thing to expect is that the rear passengers window surrounds will most likely have the covering peeling off. it looks very ugly but it happens to all 32's. the glue that holds the material down surrounding the rear windows just becomes unstuck. mine's had it badly and my mates gtr has too. i've heard it's VERY common.

If they only imported and complied it recently, ask to see the import documentation? Part of the import process is the vehicle has to be deregistered in Japan, if they have that it will have the KM's on it from when it was in Japan. Won't help you if the numbers have been wound back in japan before auction, but it's something to check.

Last but not least... This is the V-Series section.

Wrong place to post your question

V35_Paul,

Sorry Mate for this as this is the first time I have ever been on a forum like this, any suggestions as to the right place I should be posting on would be helpful.

Have a little look around the forum. There are some threads with really good info on what you should look out for.

    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
    • Thank you so much for the help
    • Yes it is ATF. I quote @Duncan "it takes a good synthentic auto trans fluid like Castrol Transmax Z" It's not a diff. It's a transfer case. Totally different thing. Yes, fluid will come out the sender hole. No you do not really need to drain it. Just pull the old, quickly poke the new, clean up and top up. But realistically, you should probably take the opportunity to change it anyway.
