Well I have had the car for a bit over a month now. Done 5000 of my own K's in it. It had just clocked over 10K when I bought it. I am still amazed that every time I look at it I think it is the coolest car on earth, I normally get bored pretty quickly. I think the anticipation of owning the vehicle is what normally sucks me in. Some general observations....

The paint sux, I hate it being black its is even worse but the slightest thing will scratch the paint. I am already having to take it in for a $1000 paint rejuvination which is a glorified detail.

I catch myself driving like a grandma. I realised pretty quickly that I am going to loose my liscence in this car due to how quick and linear it climbs up the speedo. Besides that, over the first week I decided I would take anyone on at the lights, as you do. I learnt that it doesnt matter what they are driving there is no real point in bothering to drag them as they have NO chance of keeping up. This has staggered me as I thought the 317KW HSV GTS was a quick car. But at the lights it may as well be a VB-VC commo.

I need to tint my windows. I am now embarassed by the amount of people that stop and stare at the car. Taking pics, asking question even drawing a small crowd. I had police officers giving me the thumbs up, I have had people bowing down to the car on the side of the road on Chapel Street. I was a bit ego inflating at first but am very over it now.

It is a true everyday supercar. You can drive it at any speed and it just cruises. Taking the kids to school, baby seat in the back. You can't do that in a Porsche. Even the wife takes it to go shopping when it is the last in the driveway. Then when you kick it into race mode it changes into a beast from the depths of hell.

All the creature comforts of a Euro luxury car, only just found the seat heater button last weekend and someone had to point it out to me. Alot of stuff to work through if you are inclined or just get it and punch it if needed.

It does have some noice comming from the gearbox, a few clunk de clunks every now and then but to be honest its not all that often and when I think about how smooth and nice it is to drive I just dont care about the noises every so often. As I am told they are hand built and the trans is mated to the engine, maybe I just got a quiet one as it is not bad at all.

Reverse sensors or camera would have been nice. Also I still havent worked out how to import the numbers from my iphone via blue tooth.

When the seats are folded forward they really should automatically slide forward as well like most other 2 doors cars, it is annoying to have to move the button on the side of the seat. Although it is cool that the passenger seat has a secondary button that the driver can get to on the other side of the seat.

Secret compartment under the passenger floor mat. That's cool but I am missing the jack?

Can't change the tyre pressue guage to PSI, that sux, but I dont look at it much.

Back seats are pretty good, an adult can sit in it with their feet on the floor, it is a squash but definately not impossible.

It is low but I am not hitting the front bar on the ground when going up driveways, that has surprised me as I thought I would be scratching the crap out of it on a regular basis.

Whats with the dodgy rear view mirror, I have the same one in my 1978 Falcon. What happened to a compas, automatic dimmer or garage door opener.

The sunglasses holder on the roof is usable. Finally a Nissan with one that will fit something other than sunnies for a 2yo.

Cooler interior lighting would have been good, some LED's etc.

That's about all I can be bothered typing at the moment. I can only pick the smallest things that are wrong with the car, there is nothing besides the paint that I think is any type of an issue and I think that I will have that sorted shortly anyway. Is it worth the money? HELL YEAH worth every cent. I appluad you other 35 owners as I am sure you are having as much fun with your car as I am. If only there were a few more on the road so that we could catch up.

Glad that you are enjoying it. Mine was in the first Australian delivery so I've had it for a while now. The secret compartment on the passanger side is actually where the tow hook lives if you ever need it. Hopefully you won't.

Even after driving it for over a year I'm still amazed at just how quick it is. You need to be mindful of this at all times. I was on my way to the Sunshine Coast on the weekend and was stuck behind one of those tossers that can't maintain a constant speed. Found a gap on the left, ducked in to it, got past and planted the throttle. Within moments you're doing 200KM/H. It's just a matter of time before I do something like this and there is a cop around.

Highway driving is boring as hell because it's so capable. Take it out into the twisty stuff in R mode. It scares me with it's ability to defy physics. A car that weighs this much should not be able to do the things it does.

Because I was one of the first buyers that had to lay down cash the October before it arrived I was sent the whole disclaimer about noise etc. At first the clunking of the gearbox is a bit disterbing but you get used to it very quickly and now it doesn't even register with me. People that get in the car hear it and ask if it's normal.. Is what normal?

You get used to the attention it attracts after a while. Now I just smile and pay attention to what I'm doing. The dude giving me the double thumbs up while turning a corner did scare me a little. If you leave it parked on a street in a busy area expect to have a small growd gathered when you return. This is normal.

Wait until you have dragged off a 997 Turbo at the lights and at the next set of lights the owner says "Damn I knew I should have got one of those." Wait until you're at the track and start chasing the porkers down much to their amazement.

Enjoy the legend that is GTR!

Great write up, thanks for that.

So this is your daily driver? I had concerns about getting this as my daily, I thought the C63 AMG would be more practical for me. Do you think I should go for the R35?

Yes this is my daily driver and I would have no hesitation in recommending it as a daily as well.

      And if it still spikes, just for now, turn off VCT completely by disabling it OR simply unplug the solenoid. Just to rule out excessive exhaust pressure. I recall a video from Motive DVD about a decade ago, where Hawkins original single Garrett GTX3582 or so turbo had boost control issues sub 1.4bar of boost as well.   Food for thought? Is there anyway you can peg the WG completely open and/or dodgily not plumb it back into your exhaust system for testing purposes?

      I will endeavour to give it a crack sooner or later. I have the wastegate apart at the moment so I'll replace it with a smaller spring just to see what it does and if I have to go back then so be it.   If it spikes to 23 but can then be controlled back to 20, then the gate must not be 100% open... So if it's not 100% open then why can't it drop the boost even further than 20psi (I understand it's not linear). What a headache this whole thing is.

      Either the WG is reaching full opening, or it is not. The "it is not" case could only occur if there was not enough time available to swing the valve fully open during that boost event. I would consider that to be unlikely, as this is a commercial product that is in use elsewhere, so it really should work. But in your case, because there is definitely SOMETHING wrong, it should not be assumed that things like that are working as they should. You should put a video camera where it can see the actuator (if at all possible) during a run to see how far it is moving.

      I think you're mostly on the ball there. With the straight gate, I suspect the weight of the spring will determine how quickly the gate can close, when not run with active pressure drive on both sides of the diaphragm. Otherwise, with drive on both sides of the diaphragm, you could almost go without a spring at all, only needing one to make sure that the thing was actually closed while completely off boost and not having pressure available to drive it closed. Butterfly valves have mostly symmetric loading when there is flow going through them, meaning that the gas hitting the upstream part of the blade is balanced by the gas hitting the downstream part of the blade, which means you don't need actuator torque to overcome any non-symmetric flow induced loads. But the gas flow does impart a purely normal load against the shaft, which transfers into the bush/bearing at each end of the shaft and does increase the torque required to make the shaft turn. Only a little, but it is there. I have no feeling for the amount of force involved in a WG application, but it certainly could make an argument for a decent spring weight being required. But all of this is just peripheral to the actual problem here.

      The answer to this would be I followed the documentation from Turbosmart which said each spring pressure could achieve a maximum of 5x it's rated pressure so the included smallest spring being the 6psi had a range up to 30psi. I went with the 12 because I figured it'd likely hover around 15psi as a base pressure however I was obviously wrong.    I have a log here that I'll dig out that is purely wastegate and no Mac valve controlling anything.   If it can't hold anywhere near 12psi, does that mean the straight gate is virtually wide open during a run? Or am I thinking about this all wrong.   I could Tee Piece into the cooler pipe pre intercooler where the wastegate gets its feed, and send that to the ecu and see how that reads, I just don't have a spare pressure sensor currently that's all.
