holiday driving rant...

what is the deal with those who choose to go 10km/h under the limit on the Pacific Hwy until they reach an overtaking lane where they suddenly find the 'racer within' and go 20km/h over?

i found this phenomenon to be disturbingly common on my trek to & from the Gold Coast. single lane 10km under - o/t lane 20km over - back to 10km under, making getting past them a little more difficult than it should be.

has anyone else noticed this?

watching the manouvers people are doing (me included) to get around this highly frustrating species of driver is quite interesting.

lol it happens everywhere you go everyone knows that in a single lane double lines it doesnt matter how slow u go people cant do anything... come double its a race to stay in front even if u are just going to back off when i comes to a single lane again... it sucks but meh happens everywhere

I had a similar phenomenon when returning from Brisbane last Easter - cost me a $150 fine when I had to accellerate to 96 k (in 80 highway zone) to get past this total incompetant who couldn't drive at more than 70 k when there was only one lane each way, yet found the confidence to travel at 80k when he had an extra lane available.

another interesting one was being spat at by a tradie doing about 140+ in a HZ 1 tonner while simultaneously trying to push in front of me on the brisy to gc motorway.

kinda funny in hindsight...

I have experienced the same phenomena all around Australia and its not isolated to one particular area. I believe its related to age and "oh people are over taking me, better go faster". Its very baffling, and very annoying. Luckily being in a skyline it don't matter what speed they're going, you can generally overtake them quite quickly :P

Why do you think Qld decided to put speed cameras on overtaking lanes!!!!!!

You simply cannot get past unless you go well over 100Kph. In relation to speed cameras this is probably the most blatent case of pure revenue raising

Everyone...absolutely everyone ....who gets done in an overtaking lane should take it to court

I get the impression that the nervous nellies that do 10km/hr under the limit become more confident when the double lanes come up (more road, less claustraphobic), so then they feel more comfortable speeding up (which really bugs the rest of the drivers on the road).

The other thing I have noticed (apart from drivers with egos that can't let you go past them as it questions their manhood), is that when some people are overtaken, they suddenyl become more 'awake', realise the are crawling, then speed up - which again, bugs the rest of the other drivers on the road.

If people just learnt a bit of road courtesy none of this would Happen. When somebody is overtaking me I actually let off, and let them pass easily. That also gives them heaps of room, so when they do come back into my lane i'm not RIGHT up their ass.

Let's sit back and think why we (not everyone I'm sure) break speed limits... Is it because we want to go faster or get to a destination quicker? Maybe, but I dont think so... I have really thought about why I might do that 5-10km more than the speed limit and risk getting a fine... I reckon it is purely the sensation of overtaking another car... I don't know if its like this for the rest of you guys but when im driving down the highway, i will do 105 to pass a car that is doing 100... but will do 110 to pass a car doing 105... hmmmm

It sounds like you guys get it pretty bad on the motorways in Australia.

What is the average limit over there on a dual carriage way? 90kmh? 100kmh?

In the UK the limit is 70 miles per hour, although most people drive at around 80-85 mph. Police won't do a thing if you're amongst traffic that's doing 90mph even.

We don't get so many cameras on motorways - only in areas under maintenance - but the real problem is the cameras in towns and cities. They are pure revenue generators. It is getting so bad the Conservative party are trying to get votes by saying they'll scrap all cameras on non-dangerous stretches of road (i.e. all un-necessary cameras) if they get into power!

Luckily all cameras in the UK have to have a luminous yellow back to them so you can spot them as you go up the road. This doesn't include hand-held radar guns though.

the road in question is bloody shocking considering it is the main hwy (and is National Route 1) from Sydney to Brisbane. 1 lane per direction for the most part between Necastle & the Byron turnoff.

my rant was that the randoms one encounters on this road make a shitty road even shittier. Unfortunately with each new random driver i encounter i get more aggressive, which is not a healthy way to go on the road

I just thought it was a one off thing. I noticed it on my way up to Gladstone. Was so utterly annoyed and it was very dangerous as everyone was racing to overtake, but when the merging takes place everyone is on their brakes so they don't run up the ass of the car in front. People also need to learn how to merge.

All mighty frustrating.

I went down great ocean road a little while ago for the first time, had my folks in the car so couldnt go very fast and I just wanted to cruise with them and enjoy the view anyway, so like any normal person would do, I kept pulling into the turnout to let cars pass.

The next day, I felt a little more confidant on the same strecth of road and wanted to do the speed limit but kept coming up to cars that simply refuse to pull over either cos their wankers or because they had no idea what to do. Really pissed me off and made for what should have been a 30 minute trip between some towns much longer and frustrating.

Had the same trouble on the Great Ocean Rd, first was playing it safe and just cruising, sometimes catching up to cars and occasionally pulling over to let someone overtake. But further up we were stuck behind some bastard in an old Kingswood, fair enough they go slow but we went through about 5 "turn-out" points and even through a town with about 4 people stuck behind him and he wouldn't budge. Could finally overtake him after awhile though.

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
