GHT70 R33
Hi guys, ive recently blown the turbo and replaced it with another one. When fired up it had a tiny amount of white smoke out the exhaust while idleing then went away. But then after a while it got a ticking sound (mainly at idle)from around the turbo/exhaust manifold/heat sheild/dump pipe or cat area i cant exactlty tell where its coming from. Under inspection i have noticed that 1 x exhaust manifold bolt has snapped with the thread still sitting in it(first bolt at front of motor), since replacing the turbo and all new gaskets its definatelty not as quick, i thought this would be simply because i had a high flowed turbo on it and replaced with a stock one. It still boosts fine, runs up to about 9psi without a boost controller, my highflowed one ran up to about 13-14psi and still without a boost controller. Could this possibly be a stuffed or blocked cat? It sounds alot like a stuffed cat to me as its making the same crappy sound my xr6 made when the cat went in that. Could the turbo blowing a oil seal have blocked or stuffed the cat somehow? Or could it be an exhaust manifold, dump pipe bolt i havent been able to tighten enough? Or could it be the turbo is stuffed? I'm really hopeing its not the turbo after just replacing it, i would love it if it was just a cat problem but cant be sure? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks guys. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/337375-ticking-sound-from-turboexhaust-area/ Share on other sites
SECURITY
most likely the manifold to turbo gasket. GHT70 R33
yer, leaky manifold gasket. Ok i'm glad it dousnt sound like the turbo, but can the exhaust manifold be removed and the gasket replaced with the turbo still on it or would the whole turbo setup have to be removed to get to it? Trozzle
whole setup removed, fairly big job. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/337375-ticking-sound-from-turboexhaust-area/#findComment-5454645 Share on other sites
Adriano
Obviously a stock turbo@9psi is going to be heaps slower than a highflow@14psi Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/337375-ticking-sound-from-turboexhaust-area/#findComment-5454660 Share on other sites
SECURITY
Ok i'm glad it dousnt sound like the turbo, but can the exhaust manifold be removed and the gasket replaced with the turbo still on it or would the whole turbo setup have to be removed to get to it? dont go and rip it all out at once. do the easy jobs first (like dump and turbo first) then if it seems as though the gaskets are fine there, then do the exhaust manifold gasket. if you loosen the exhaust from the mounts underneath the car (you only really need to loosen the solid one near the front pipe), you can usually move the turbo away from the manifold enough to get the gasket in and out without removing the oil and water lines. just be careful of how much leverage you use. joeyjoejoejuniorshabadoo
get some garden hose and you should be able to hear if there is a substantial enough leak... GHT70 R33
get some garden hose and you should be able to hear if there is a substantial enough leak... Cheers guys, i took it to a reputable workshop and we found that its actually the wastegate flap.when i put it on it was a bit loose so when they moved the wastgate bar and it sealed properly the sound went away. So all it needs is the wastegate ajusted or like a washer or something put around the little round flap on the back of the turbo. Cheers.
