Hi guys. Thought I'd better jump in on this one and give a small heads up.

I've seen these pumps advertised on ebay also and if it was my own engine, personally I would not go near one. It costs us way more than this entire pump just to manufacture a gear set for our pumps.

The gears and backing plates for our pumps are manufactured here in Australia despite what people on forums tell you and the housings are manufactured in Taiwan to keep costs and RRP prices down. I couldn't tell you for sure if the housing from the ebay special is from the same supplier as ours or just another copy. Even though we have spent large amounts of money on moulds for casting and R&Ding / field testing final castings, unfortunately the exclusivity agreements we have in place are at best questionable.

You all know that the most important parts of an oil pump are the gears and some would not be aware of the role the backing plate plays as well. I'll give you a quick rundown on what goes into manufacturing these items on a "proper" performance pump.

First of all gears. Our gears start off as billet EN series steel round bar blanks. 2 blanks from each batch of material we purchase are sent straight off to the metalurgist for composition and hardness testing to ensure the material we have purchased is within specification for acceptable composition for the material. You would be suprised at the amount of raw material we knock back from our suppliers just due to the results from this testing. The blanks are then CNC machined into a shape that resembles the inner and outer gears before they are sent for normalising / stress relieving and nitriding. From here the gears are EDM wire cut to shape and then sent off to be rumbled / polished which provides excellent running surfaces and smooth radiused edges. From here we sacrifice an inner and an outer gear to return back to the metalurgist to be cut up and checked for correct nitriding depth and suface hardness. If all is within our specification then the gears are finished. The EN series steel we use is both an overkill in material and expensive to use but is extremely durable and reliable under all operating conditions which is what we set out to achieve.

We CNC machine our backing plates from billet 7071 series alloy and this is not just done to make the pump look pretty. A lot of people would not be aware of the accosiated issues of a cast alloy backing plate and even though it is not a big problem, we have found further reliabilty can be achieved in this area. A cast backing plate actually flexes during oil pump operation which reduces the stability of oil pressusre delivery. Our billet alloy backing plate actually completely prevents this scenario and provides a consistant oil pressure delivery rate which further enhances the oil pumps performance and your engines reliability. You would notice Nissan has most likely found the same thing and hence added the extra screw towards the middle of their N1 oil pump backing plate. Unfortunately they still went budget on the crappy sintered material gears though.

Each set of gears is measured / toleranced and matched to a housing prior to fitting and is carefully assembled, bluprinted and sealed ready for installation straight onto your engine without need for stripping and cleaning.

So as you can see our pumps are not just something that is bought, badged and resold and definitely in another league to the usual ebay specials. I'll bet the ebay seller can not even tell you with honesty what material the gears are made from. I would also be suprised if the company making them could even answer this question.

Guys, an oil pump is the heart of your engine and so important especially on an RB. Even if you have spent money on just a mild rebuild it is still a lot of money and effort. Why sacrifice that to something just to save a few bucks in the big picture? Save for those extra couple of weeks and get a pump that you won't have to worry about. When an oil pump goes wrong things can REALLY go wrong!

^^ Agreed..and after comparing all pictures of the genuine 'nitto ' casting and these ones...front and back looks identical everywhere and the only difference i

can see is the rear plate is dull compared to the genuine nitto & phillips head screws used instead of hex.

In fact im going to buy one and get the gears tested for material & hardness.

i to want to test the gearset this is paramount.

i have a customer bringing in one for me to look at. I have a Greddy one here we can compare it too.

Thanks again to all of you for your input - I had a reply from both sellers currently listing these pumps, both said:

"The gears are 14.5mm and they're made from sintered steel"

So I guess these pumps might be marginally better than an N1 pump, but still in my books not an option.

Nitto - thanks so much for your in-depth insight - the final nail in the coffin really. Again, I would LOVE to get my hands on one of your pumps, but it is simply out of my price range - I have an RB30DET making around the 300kw mark, fairly mild and with the whole motor tallied up is only worth around 2K all up (std. internals etc.) - I just cannot justify (let alone afford) spending that much money.

I will be getting some billet gears for my N1 pump, as that is MY best option - everyone needs to weigh up all their options, and that is best for me. - and on that note - Nitto, do you sell billet gears for the N1 pump?

So in conclusion for these pumps - exactly what they appear to be - cheap.

^^ Yes , i just got a reply today also regarding the gears ...it appears the housing IS a direct copy of the nitto.

BUT...they obviously have cut corners by using dodgy sintered metal gears.

So much for a high performance pump as they have stated..

So the same old rule applies...You get what you pay for.

Well if you do actually do this, I can send you the gears from a genuine nitto pump to use as a baseline for the comparison. I dont care if they are tested to destruction, as the pump housing they came out of was damaged. (colateral damage from another failure, not the pump itself).

Thanks Andrew for getting on here and helping to put an end to the rumor mill a little. It seems so much of the after market industry is surounded with a cloud of BS. This is where Nitto have it over the jap parts I think. As brands like HKS, TOMEI and JUN have been around so long, there is so much myth surrounding their products, and what limited real information there is you cant find translated to english. It seems that so much of what you find to read is just someone elses opinion.

I wouldnt be surprised of Nitto have or will be doing their own comparison on these cheap pumps to see if their exclusivity agreement is holding up. I doubt Nitto would be able to release that data to the public though.

No worries! We don't offer billet replacement gears as extra oil flow was something we deemed necessary from our product. Totally understand your reasoning as everyone has a budget to work with. Good luck with your build and happy motoring!

So how about becoming a trader and starting a group buy, as most of your demand is probably on this forum

As we are a manufacturer we would prefer to support our dealers for all sales. More than happy to help out with any technical support for our products but it makes sense in the bigger picture to keep this industry healthy despite the fact that we would be better off dealing at a retail level. Hope you understand.

Happy to shed some light and yes unfortunately many people in this industry do like to feel big by starting or continuing rumours / opinions.

We are chasing up these housings and also the people selling the complete pumps and advertising them being the same as a Nitto item but it is always an uphill battle. Any manufacturer will tell you same thing. The easiest thing is to try and educate people with the real facts. I just feel sorry for the people that waste their hard earned on products that are advertised as something they are not.

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
