Hey Guys,

I'm new to this site so i apologise in advance for any mishaps. I have an R33 Series 1, recently my auto box has had problems changing out of first gear. It will just rev out through the gear and not change in to second. When i take my foot off the throttle it just stalls.

When i restart the car it will work fine for a while, then after waiting at lights for instants, the problem happens over again. Its at the point now i am replacing the box with a new second hand one.

I am currently running 300 HP at the rears on standard fuel, I am wondering what the max handling is of the gearbox? Is my power currently to high for the gearbox to handle and is it going to continue to blow box's, or would the problem have just been it was old and tired and required replacing?

Can anyone help me out? Feedback much appreciated :)

Cheers,

Glenn

i think it should be fine at those power levels. you could always shift kit it? theres a thread on here about shift kits, im pretty sure some of those guys were running higher hp

Cheers mate,

Ii had my box pulled out to fit a new rb25 box in, however it has a rb20 gearbox in it?

Now the rb25 box doesnt work in it. The speedo and gears are completely screwed? Reading wrong and not engaging gears properly?

Any thoughts guys? I'm completely stumped on this, i really dont understand whats wrong?

so do you have an rb20? the ecu also controls the auto box, so that might be why its playing up? im not too sure on this but maybe you can only put a rb20 box back on? some one on here should know.

sorry im not much help

What motor is in front of the box?

Hey guys,

I have an RB25....having trouble hey? I have no idea what an rb20 box is doing on my car, or how it has lasted this long for that matter. Im pushing 300 hp at the wheel at the moment thats why it blew im sure.

No sure how the ECU works, i dont understand why an rb25 box doesnt work on an rb25.

Help please ppl...

Possibly a very early series 1 that still used the old transmission, and had an ecu mapped for it? I don't have anything concrete to base that on other than a vague memory of reading something about very early S1's differing from their slightly younger cousins. You could borrow/buy an ecu from a series one that u know had the re4r01a transmission from factory and try that. Maybe its possible to remap yours to suit, prolly a question for your Nissan workshop if you draw a blank here.

Thanks heaps mate, i thought the same thing....does the series 1 skyline have a seperate ecu to run the gearbox? Or is it built in to the engine ecu located under the passenger kick panel?

I just want to cover all bases before I try something rash?

Mmm, I think a call to Nissan with your vin and model number could be worth while. If it is the auto ecu, what if the new one doesn't fit your wiring harness? converting to the re4r01a trans might be more trouble than it's worth, or maybe it's a piece of cake and just a matter of plugging the new one in. Either way it would be nice to know what to expect before embarking on more work.

Thanks heaps for all the help guys, my mechanic taken it upon himself to pull the 25 box out and put another 20 box in that works (HOPEFULLY).

He said its not worth the hassle to him. Im pretty gutted actually. Hopefully this one works for me and lasts a while before i can afford a manual conversion.

if you have an automatic, steer clear of Nizzpro in Ashmore, QLD. Not very helpful with automatics. Very good at everything else tho. Defianetley taking there sticker of my car!

thanks again guys, i will let you know how i go. Glenn

Mate Nizzpro are hopeless across the board, went in their told them I was chasing mod parts for my R33 they said what do you want we have everything. So after listing about 8 different things which they had none of I gave up and walked out.

But on the coast I'd be taking it to Lex at Russells Automatic Transmission Specialists 5561 7061

He knows alot about these boxes and will be able to help you out.

    • Hi from Canada, Both of my calipers are starting to fail. My car is a 2005 M35 Stagea ARX and I can't seem to find any parts or any cross reference caliper that would fit my car. Is there a company or a similar caliper that would fit and I could replace the OEM one. Or if anyone knows where I can find a new OEM. Any help is very appreciated. Let me know!
    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day   Highway gets as low as 10l/100km on my end so I'm not as worried about it being a mechanical issue. More likely just the tune on the haltech.
