Hey guys, I'm new here to the forum, and I've done my best job to search for the answer to this question, but with little luck.

I'm looking to purchase a 1996 r33 Skyline, I've inspected it, tried it, and loved it. It's in great nick, not too loud, and drives like a dream.

However it has a few mods, and I want to know how I'm gonna get this passed for rego.

Has FMIC, turbo timer, duel boost setup (runs 7 and 14psi) and a pod filter. Exhaust is fairly quiet so i don't think that'll be an issue.

I'm not sure if the rims will pass, since the rears are noticeably larger than the fronts also? But I have the option to get some stock silvia rims with it, to use which have good tires etc.

I was told the intercooler and pod are fine here in the ACT, but I could get defected for them if I'm driving in NSW. I was told that the duel boost setup is not legal, it has to be single set boost and isolated? And that the turbo time is not ok, that the car needs to turn off when the key is removed.. However if I just set it to 0 would that be fine, or would I need to remove it?

Where could/should I go to get the check done? I was told this car has passed as it was (after swapping the rims) through Dickson before (3.5 years ago) by the current owner... However is there a good place northside/mitchell I can get a compression test done and rego check?

Comments, suggestions and ideas would be most welcome!! THANKS!

To be blunt, you don't NEEEEEEEEEEEED to take it through Dickson. You're supposed to, but you can get away with not taking it there. I didn't take mine there.

Boost controller isn't allowed, but if you don't take it to dickson, just stash it somewhere under the steering column and try putting the solenoid in the engine bay somewhere out of sight a little bit if you can.

Turbo timer isn't legal, but just set it to 0 then hide it under steering column too.

Spray the FMIC black, makes it less noticeable....not 100% necessary thought.

Wheels...well if you don't take it to Dickson, and they aren't like 19" or something stupid, then you'll be fine given that they have legal tread on them.

The inspection place I took mine didn't measure exhaust sound level, and didn't measure height. The car wasn't low though, and I don't think the exhaust was too loud back then either...he did however measure tint lol, which failed as I expected (5%)

Otherwise my only question to you is, how are you running 14psi without it shitting itself? what ECU does it have??

What place would you recommend I take it to? Since a lot of the places I've called seem iffy about doing a rego check on a modded car.

Also, re the ECU, I am not actually sure the exact details, it's a mines afik, I'd have to ask the guy again (I actually asked him to specify in an email for me). It is possible I miss heard the 14psi, but pretty sure he said 7 and 14, or 7 and 12.

The car runs so nicely, and I'm very keen to get it, but just gotta manage to get it changed over to my name without it costing me a fortune in fixes or changes.

ive been raped by dickson a few times now.... wait.

remove everything thats not standard or obvious - boost control, turbo timer etc. if you have a pod, make sure it mounted to the car.

put the stockies on and remove adjustable suspension.

most important of all, leave a few small things wrong thats easy to fix, eg broken tail light globe, empty washer bottle, as they'll want fail you on something first time around. oh, and be courteous to them - goes a long way.

*EDIT* seriously, if you can, ask your gf/friend/fembot to take it over (skimpy clothing helps) and be a bit blond about it. they'd probaby pass a gokart if its brought over by sexy chick. thats how we pass my missus S14 over with heaps of mods

If I gotta go to dickson, I will, if can go elsewhere instead, happy enough to do that. Just need some advice. I have a mate who can help me hide or remove a few bits as necessary, since I've not had enough experiences as yet with these things myself..

I guess all I can do is hide the stuff best I can, remove what is possible. Take it through and see.. Most of the stuff to hide or change aren't gonna cost me a fortune I am pretty sure..

I'll see what can do.. Not sure really have that option. Also not purchasing it until it's had the rego check done to know that I'm not up for a fortune on probs or issues... if only small things I'm happy to fork for it, cos this car seems worth it. And thus the owner will be taking it and me just meeting him there.

I want to know how he had it passed at Dickson last time though... All he had to do was change the rims supposedly.

I took mine to Lanyon Service Centre.....which is a little far for you to go

Dickson can go f**k themselves. I took a 100% stock R33 over there with legal aftermarket top bloke (chrome) wheels, and lowered springs (legal ride height, I checked with people in the car) and they still failed me on the height. I went home and checked it again, and it was still legal. I was very courteous and polite, and struck up a small conversation. Assholes.

This car was stolen and written off 2 weeks later anyway, lol.

Yeah I work in Mitchell, live in Giralang, and the old owner is in Flynn, north side would be ideal..

I can get Premier Automotive Repairs in Mitchell to do the compression check, and rego check next thursday, but I don't know how nice, useful or helpful they are or will be. I'm gonna take it "as is" cept for the rims most likely... But I'll talk to the current owner.

If they knock me back on stuff, I'll see what can do bout them. if they are do able, and not gonna cost me a fortune, I'm still gonna buy the car, and will do the stuff, if is gonna fcuk me about, then I'll keep looking around.

It should be ok, and I'm over paranoid lol. But this car is sweet, quite a sleeper for a skyline (which isn't saying much I guess).

Ta for the help and advice. I'm looking forward to meeting and talking with more canberra skyline enthusiasts so can get help and advice on all that I need, and so can learn more about my car, their cars, options and ways to look after the baby as best possible to get the best life from her

Premier is a good shop!

I got mine done there, was a stock r34 gtt at the time. they pased it no worries.

In fact my van is going there tomorrow for a check up and service :P

Cool, thanks, glad to hear something fromm somebody on the place. I got them to replace a wheel stud on my Pulsar bout 6months ago, they did a great job at a good price.. Part of why called em for this, I hope they let my car through... but it has some mods.. *fingers crossed* - and if necessary and gotta fix some stuff, hope it's simple stuff that doesn't give me grief..

I have stock rims to put on, and it's got a quiet exhaust, it's a neat, tidy car that doesn't stand out like dogs balls til you put ur foot on the gas with the boost up. It aint one the best Skylines for power, but it's more than decent enough for me. I want it for the look, the feel and the style. I want it to last and work, and it has enough power for me 8-)

It doesn't have enough power. It will never have enough power. You'll catch the bug soon enough :)

I won't doubt that. I'll prob notice it once I've become accustomed to the car with the new level of power. But still, for me it is part of the look, the feel the style and just the car itself, not just the power.. But can't deny gotta love the power too...

Oh yeah man, you will.

My first R33 was 100% stock bar rims and springs. It had an assumed 154rwkw. It was fast and had balls.

My current R33 had 170rwkw when I got it. It pulled even harder and was great fun. I then had it run on a dyno for a checkup rather than power figure. They discovered the CAS was out, and after adjusting it correctly it made 190rwkw. This was sooo much better.

Since then I've had new turbo, injectors, fuel pump, coilpacks, and ECU fitted. Now sitting on 294.4rwkw. Shit's crazy yo.

The one I'm hopefully getting the dyno sheet says it's doing 220.9rwkw. So it aint bad at all.

Would be interesting to see a mine's ecu with stock turbo making 220rwkw. :)

AFIK it was a stock turbo, it may not be. It runs duel 7 and 12psi.

FMIC, pod, lighter flywheel (was done when the new clutch was put in 5000kms ago), turbo back exhaust.. I think thats meant to be all the performance mods done.... I'll have to inquire more when take another look etc.

Mines ECU's are generally not something tuned specifically on a dyno while in your car (at least not outside of Japan)

They're usually just a more optimal tune that makes use of increased airflow and timing etc. Better, but not spot on.

    • I haven’t pulled the injectors to watch them spray yet but they are clicking from the cas and all of the spark plugs are wet with fuel. I’ve thought the cylinders were being flooded from the beginning and was hoping fuel pressure would fix it. Tonight I am going to pull the rail and watch the injectors spray. Don’t know how to test/diagnose if the plugs are firing in correct sequence but that should be a timing thing and as far as timing goes my car still has the half moon for the cas can only install it 1 way. And my mechanical timing is 100% correct I posted photos above. Confirmed with the balancer on and off.
    • I checked spark on all cylinders and they all visually have spark with the plug pulled and grounded, but plug 1 is the only one that fouled. This was a running swap that blew up and was rebuilt by a machine shop, put a new wiring specialties harness and did all gaskets, studs, and bolts while it was out.  compression is 135-150 across all cylinders. Aside from that from my understanding with the z32 ecu and maf the car should start regardless. The wiring for TPS and the dual 02 sensor/ dual knock sensor stuff shouldn’t actually stop the car from starting or even running well, (just slightly rich)  they just give fault codes. Car supposedly is supposed to start as long as you have z32 afm and ecu with the nistune base map and that’s info coming from a well known and trusted tuner who does a lot with SR/RB (Rsenthalpy). After more trouble shooting today where I’m at right now is that the cas is sending signal to the injectors they click while spinning the rotor, Fuel pressure is now set at 43psi, all cylinders have good compression and all of the plugs looked great (just wet with fuel) except for cylinder 1 which was very black (cylinder 1 has 150psi compression). all of the coils generate spark if pulled out and grounded out on the head. On the fuel pump car just pops into the exhaust. On starting fluid car will fire off. Hard to tell if all cylinders are firing off but definitley a couple. sounds like all of them but it’s only for 3-5 seconds hard to tell.
    • Final update!!! Got the front bar fitted and sprayed and all sorted now. My cutouts worked great and the indicators aren’t just falling off. 😂
    • Is this a brand new LSD? if so, have you followed any break/bed in procedure for it? Usually involves heaps of figure 8 patterns, a fluid flush.
    • It's TWO steering wheels actually. 😛 one for each hand They are wheels, and they steer!
