Hey all. The gear stick in my Stagea 260RS came out of it position yesterday after a quick gear change in to second. Anyhow, I got a temporary fix for it (its still not quite right), but I am looking for the correct part number so i can order the parts and be confident it wont happen again.

The part is a little nylon nuckle that is on the very very end of the gear stick that goes inside the transmission. It on the end of the gear stick below the pivot point. Its basically what decides what gear the transission goes in.

Ha! Yeah I laugh at it now... I saw dollar signs when it happened but! I could ony select 3rd or 5th gear when it happened. Was quite hard to drive with a triple plate brass button clutch :P

Forgot to mention that the gearbox is installed in a 1998 S1 Stagea Autech.

Hey the rest of what i wrote isnt there.. Anyway.. check what the part number is on nissan fast.. if you don't have it post your VIN up and someone should be able to help from there..

if it is the nylon bush at the bottom of the shifter, nissan sell them for about 20c. they are identical to r31 skyline/d21 navara and most dealers have the part in stock :P

I've had to replace 2 over the years, one on the gtr, one on my navara.

however....the nylon bush just goes into the selector, when it is missing you should be still be able to find all the gears, the shifter will just move around heaps. If you can't select a gear maybe the bush is jammed somewhere? In both cases for me the bush must have fallen to the bottom of the box because I've had no problems since

The reason it fell out (i think) is the nylon bush was probably worn out and with me doing a quick hard shift into 2ND gear, it has thrown the stick and nylon bush out of position. After pulling the rubber boot off the top of the transmisson, we found the old nylon bush. The C-clip and everything else that was supposed to be there looked to be A1.

I could only get 3RD and 5TH straight after it hapened because the stick was completly out of the selector. Once I had stopped the vehicle and calmed down abit, I was able to get the gear stick in its right place in the selector and could then select every gear by moving the gear stick gently.

Well I have purchased and installed a bush that is a genuine Nissan item 32861-05U00. https://www.justjap.com/store/product.php?productid=18009. This part specifiys it should be the correct one for my Stagea. BUT... The gear stick still feels as if there is no bush in there at all, just as it did when it fell out in the first place. The post above this one states I should have part No. 32861-H7301 https://www.justjap.com/store/product.php?productid=18010 Will this take the slop out of my stick?

As it is now with the 32861-05U00, the gear stick can be pulled up and down as there is a fair bit of "play" in it. It feels terrible.

Anyone got any ideas?

hmm sorry I may have given you a bum steer then. I used the first one in my stagea, but of course I have a 32 gtr gearbox (important difference I should have mentioned!). Was the bush yuo got a tight fit on the bottom of your gear stick?

If you've had it all apart you will have seen the gate in the gearbox - do you have any way of measuring the inner diameter of the gearbox end? If the shifter bush's outer diameter is not the same you will still have "slop" in the throw.

Its no prob. The 32861-05U00 seemed to fit into the gearbox quiete well. But if there is slop "up and down" in the gear stick, then this must mean the bush must not sit high enough therefore giving the gearstick room to move.

The bush's we have mention only cost$5 or $7, so I will order one of each! :D

When you put the shifter back in with the new bush the outside of the bush should be a snug fit into the hold that it sits in.

Also cusco make metal (brass? bronze?) replacements but IIRC they're $30-40.

Wow! What would be the benefit of a "metal" one over a "plastic" one?

And exactly who sells it? Is there a website?

I imagine the metal one would be more durable. The photo is from rhdjapan.com if you cant see the watermark in the photo well. I've bought from them a few times with no problem. No doubt you could get the part from anywhere that sells cusco tho.

Well its happened again! This is the second time it happened! The first one mentioned above that fell off the gear stick disappeared into the depths of gear box and was forgotten about for several months UNTIL it found its way into the transfer case and got stuck in there making a terrible knocking noise as it went around as I drove. At first I thought it was a chipped tooth on the front diff. But after taking it to a drive-line specialist they found the bloody nylon collar jammed in the transfer case.

I am thinking of giving the metal Cusco one (that's pictured above) a try, but I am scared about the consequence's if this also decides to depart the gear stick and get into the gear box.

A couple of questions are:

Why am I having this problem?

Is it a common problem with R33 GTR drive-lines?

Has this happened to anyone else more than once?

The Nylon Bush was brand new. The diff and drive-line mob repaired and installed it.

Both times it has happened, I was shifting from 1st to 2nd rather harshly. So I am putting it down to operator error! :unsure:

As its happened twice now. I am thinking it'd be worth replacing the gear stick too. Luckily this time it happened, I was 300m from my house so I was able to sneak it home in 1st gear. Last time i was at the wrong end of the Putty road!!!

Do you think these metal Cusco ones would be better to use than a Nylon one? As far as less chance of "falling off"...

they are a tighter fit compared to the nylon ones. Havent tested mine out in a car yet so can't comment on how they go everyday use. GKTECH are making these now for the 33 boxes, which might be the same size bush as your GTR box?

    • Thanks for all the replies fellas. Gonna finish putting it back together and see how it handles the set up. If it starts pinging it’ll be parked.
    • Well, I can recommend the partial AV system translation CD I ordered from Car Audio Workshop in NZ. Whilst it didn't address the date issue, it has conveniently translated on-screen menu items into English, and now allows the GPS-received time to be offset in hours rather than minutes, so I can display Eastern Australian time accurately ( and bump it by another hour when daylight savings starts ).
    • Yuh, if it's 45°C outside, my car is driving in it.
    • I'd be curious to hear more. Otherwise, have you driven a modern x-trail? I wonder how it compares. Here in Australia they are/were popular for rentals and fleet vehicles. I have been in some and my impression was they are bad. But, this may have been very different in the 2000s at a good trim level. Twenty years is plenty of time to make the model worse. I do very much agree with the 2 silver cars in the garage approach. But, not driving because it's too hot would not leave a lot of time in the year for many Australians. I don't think you need to worry too much unless the car has actual issues with overheating. 
    • Back again. I returned to Japan in Jul/Aug to spend time with the car on my birthday and remind myself what all the sacrifice and compromise is for. It happened to line up with the monthly morning meet in Okutama, which I have been wanting to go to for a long time. It's a unique event at a unique spot with really rare, interesting, and quirky cars. It's where all the oldheads and OGs gather. The nighttime scene at DKF certainly has its place and should be experienced if you're into cars, but there's too much bad attention and negativity around it now. IMO the better time is Sunday morning at DKF or Okutama; it's more chill and relaxed. I'm glad I was finally able to go, but not sure it's worth the drive from all the way from Nagoya immediately the day before, unless I was already staying in Tokyo for the days right before the meet, because you have to wake up quite early to make it in time. Funnily enough though I didn't drive the car all that much this trip because it was just too damn hot. While there were zero issues and running temps were nominal and the A/C was strong, RBs already run crazy hot as it is. Sure, it took it all like a champ but something about driving these cars in the ridiculous heat/humidity bothers me and makes me feel like I'm asking too much of it. I'm just me being weird and treating the car like a living thing with feelings; I'm mechanically sympathetic to a fault. Instead I was mainly driving something else around - a KX4(silver) 2001 X-Trail GT, that I acquired in May. There's a few different flavors to choose from with Xs, but visually it's the Nissan version of the Honda CR-V. Mechanically it's a whole different story as this, being the top-trim GT, has an SR20VET mated to a four-speed auto and full-time AWD! It was a very affordable buy in exceptional condition inside and out, with very low mileage...only 48k kms. Most likely it was owned by an older person who kept it garaged and well-maintained, so I'm really happy with how it all worked out. It literally needs zero attention at the moment, albeit except for some minor visual touch-ups. I wanted something quirky, interesting, and practical and for sure it handily delivers on all three of those aspects. I was immediately able to utilize the cargo and passenger capacity to its full extent. It's a lot of fun to drive and is quite punchy through 1st and 2nd. It's very unassuming -in the twisty bits it's a lot more composed than one would think at a glance- and it'll be even better once I get better tires on it(yes, it's an SUV but still a little boat-y for my liking). So...now I have two golden-era Nissans in silver. One sports car and one that does everything else; the perfect two-car solution I think👍 The rest of the trip...I was able to turn my stressed brain off and enjoy it, although I didn't quite get to do as much as I thought. I did some interesting things, met some interesting people, and happened into some interesting situations however, that's all for another post though only if people really want to know. Project-wise, I went back to Mine's again to discuss more plans and am hoping to wrap that up real soon; keep watching this space if that interests you. Additionally, while working in the tormenting sweatbox that is the warehouse, I was able to organize most of the myriad of parts that my friend is storing for me along with the cars, and the 34 has a nice little spot carved out for it: And since it can get so stupid hot in there, that made it all the more easy -after I was standing there looking at the car and said 'f**k it'- to finally remove all the damn gauges that have mostly been an eyesore all this time. Huzzah. The heat basically makes the adhesive backing on the gauge mounts more pliable to work with, so it was far less stressful getting this done. I didn't fully clean it up or chase the wiring though; that will happen once I have the car in closer possession. Another major reason to remove all that stuff is to give people less reasons to get in my car and steal s**t while it's being exported/imported when/if the time comes, which leads us to my next point... ...and that is even though it's time in Japan is technically almost up since it's a November car and the X would be coming in March, I'm still not entirely sure where my life and career is headed; I don't really know what the future looks like and where I'm going to end up. I feel there's a great deal of uncertainty with me and as a result of that, it feels like I'm at a crossroads moreso now than any point in my life thus far and there are some choices I need to make. Yes, I've had some years to consider things and prepare myself, however too much has happened in that time to maintain confidence and everything feels so up in the air; tenuous one might say. Simply put, there's just too much nonsense going on right now from multiple vectors. Admittedly, I'm struggling to stay in the game and keep my eyes on the prize. So much so in fact, that very recently I came the closest I ever have before to calling it quits outright; selling everything and moving on and not looking back. The astute among you will pick up on key subtext within this paragraph. In the meantime I've still managed to slowly acquire some final bits for the car, but it feels nice knowing there's not much left to get and I'm almost across that finish line; I have almost everything I'll ever want for my interpretation and expression on what it is I think an R34 should be. 'til later.
