I've been having troubles with the XF Falcon (4.1L manual) that I use to tow my lawn mowing business trailer around. I've come across a possible R30 hatch, manual - which will replace the one stolen last April - and was wondering what others think about its capability to tow a trailer that will weigh around 1 Tonne fully laiden.

Your thoughts appreciated.

The driver's handbook states 800kg max trailer weight BRAKED & 400kg unbraked.

That's the legal requirement, but having said that, I have seen L24E R30's towing car trailers.

How tough is the law in Victoria on this?

Just yesterday I saw, went past an GK Sigma station wagon towing a car trailer with a KH Laser on travelling along the M7. According to the specs the KH Laser has a kerb weight of 1035kg & the Sigma has a max braked towing capacity of 1100kg, so I guess this combination would have exceeded 1500kg.

Your call I guess, but my suggestion would look more closely at your load.

Cheers, D

As a tow car, I would thing the R30 would DRINK the fuel. They are bad enough as it is on the juice!

There used to be a rule that the car could not tow more than 1.5 x its weight, then recently I think it changed to 1x times (so equal)

Its all a bit confusing,

Either way I wouldnt want to put more than 1300kg on the R30.

AU Falcon wagon on gas might be an option?

Thanks for the comments.

The guy clearly doesn't want to sell - both phone calls "rejected", and didn't respond to email - what a loser!

Andrew, the Falcon is no fuel miser after you attach the trailer. I get around 400k to a tank (E10), yet when I picked the car up from my brother in Gundagai, I got over 600! Might look into upgrading to an EFI version engine.

    • Oh right, I didn't realise it was your car. Please do! Makes me feel better about mine. I also have a big scrape on the front left bumper where someone presumably used the wall to guide the car into a parking spot  But somehow all the funds go towards mechanical things and the cosmetics stay forever unfinished... Interesting, I don't think I have seen it before. But after seeing @PranK's rusty roofline on the BMW I'd probably leave it alone. Wouldn't want water to get in there.
    • Thanks mate, thought you might know the answer.
    • Infiniti US are teasing a manual Q50 as a way to refresh a (very old) model. https://torquecafe.com/manual-performance-sedans-arent-dead-yet/ Can't be too technically difficult given the Z has the same motor with a manual gearbox......here's hoping there is a JDM version we can import here, that would save me a world of headaches
    • It's almost certainly a reluctor generating an "AC" waveform. No, ECUs don't generally read those - they're usually set up for PWM square wave 0-5v stuff.
    • Working through possible solutions of converting my mechanical speedo.    Anyone know what type of speedo sensor the factory r34 gtr getrag has ? what the output is ? I assume its not a VSS and more a voltage like earlier speedo sensors ? Can an ECU read it ?
