Flew up to Sydney and picked up Dimi (a fellow SAU'er)'s NM35 on Thursday night. He was a great guy and really did everything he could to help with the sale! Drove it back to Melbourne and got home at 1am this morning. It was a nice drive - them M35 is a great cruiser and overtaking seems effortless. The 80km-120km acceleration was amazing - probably not so much for you guys but this is my first turbo'ed car (previously had a 2010 Mazda 3, prior to that a Hyundai Excel!).

At one point I thought my Speedo was broken - I was doing 110km p/h and EVERYONE was overtaking me on the Hume. Even a very tired looking Corona...

One question - can the radio be fixed to receive Australian Frequencies? If so how much/difficult?

THIS Will fix your fm radio. Adds 14 mHz to the frequency.

you need to check your speedo using a gps, they usually read a little high but being in Vic you cant afford to not know exactly what speed your doing.

That's probably because you were doing 103 and they were doing around 120 - the 10% + 1km over the limit you can get away with on the NSW part of the Hume.

Mine reads 110 when doing 103 - 5kmh is due to usual manufacturer margin - rest due to rolling diameter differrence in the tyres. The GPS check is a must do. These lounge chairs are easy to get up to 140plus overtaking without watching what you are doing.

Congrats, man, and welcome to the Stagea family!

My sister has a Mazda3 Neo too, and it's a great little car.

I agree with doing the speedo check against a GPS device. It's pretty dumb that in Victoria you can get booked for doing only 3km/h over the speed limit, when the ADRs allow for 10% variance either way to account for different tyre sizes, pressures, etc.

YEESSS! So buying this !

neither, why would it be a compliancing issue?

Well.. technically, my car may be broadcasting in some licensed bands of the spectrum but I cant be sure and I dont want to look it up :D the TV in my car broadcasts the audio over the FM bands to be received by the headunit so that the audio comes through the cars stereo speakers (Its genius, really).. but the frequencies it uses are obviously in the japanese band - and who knows what sort of license is required to broadcast in them!

Im guessing because the radio doesnt comply to our standards ;)

Its funny there are some VERY stupid laws regarding compliance, yet this is clearly not covered!

hahaha well impatient me will be getting

so did you sort the steering buttons I sent you.

re jap bands - 10/20 shift is a better option. better again (though not cheap) is to turf it and start again.

re compliance - not really. it does not effect the safety or emmsions of the car. more of a conveinece item that you request to be done as an extra.

I've got a mate who works at Autofidelity who'll install it for me. Cheers!

I take "turf and start again" means shelling out $850 for a new facia kit and THEN installing a new headunit on? If so...I'll stick with the $25 expander :P

    • Possibly avoid using a Cometic one unless the deck/head surface are perfectly flat. I did have a look just then and forgiving gaskets such as Tomei or Nitto don't exist for the FJ20, however the Bar-Tek or Kameari ones look good and might do the trick.
    • Because pipe threads for pipe things. M threads for bolt things. Throw some teflon sealant onto it and dust your hands off knowing you did the right thing, instead of going twice around the block to achieve a result using the wrong things. Of course, all of these solutions are ignoring the fact that the minimum thread pitch we're talking about here is 1.25mm, with the 1/4" in NPT or BPS being out around 1.4mm. You will need to know that the boss you're tapping has enough thickness for at least a few threads. That's one of the reasons that 1/8" is commonly used - because the pitch is <1mm. And why would you look to use 1/4" NPT in a BSP country anyway? Ugh.
    • Just throwing around ideas, does it need to be in the compressor cover? Why not the hot side piping?
    • 1/8NPT drill size = 8.7mm. Since the hole got messed up by me, it’s probably around 9mm.    So 1/4” NPT would be next step. A drill size of around 11mm would be preferred there which is not way of my M12 (drill 10.5mm and tap M12 threads)
