Man chuck the engine!

My RB20 makes 160rwkw with just 1bar boost zorst and POD why would i spend another $1-$3000 to get a 2535?????

Should be at least makin 220rwkw with that kinda boost, AT LEAST!

But i'm headin off the beaten track and goin Apexi Turbo just as good flows the same HP as a 2540R but comes on boost @ 3000rpm in a RB20

Comes with head gasket, braided lines etc everything u need to under $4000 BRAND NEW :)

my friend with an R32 GTS-T made 227rwkw on the same dyno with a Garrett GT25 (400hp core) and this thing halls ass compared to some other GTS' i've seen.

if it's for a RB25, you'd want atleast a GT2540 which can make 250fwkw on 1bar.

have you actually seen this turbo make this power on an RB25? what was the boost curve like?

not bad as its similar power to the HKS2835, and only a tad less than my 3037S 56T does at 1 bar. I would love to see a dyno for it, as I have never heard anyone describe the HKS 2540 as anything but laggy - so it would be good to see that rumour put to rest.

Its also interesting that a 2535 makes less power than a 2530 - which will put down around 230rwkw at 1.2bar.

Just had a lookat the link you posted RS500, obviously your friend had a few problems with his 2535 turbo setup, as it is rated only just lower than the 2540 by 10kw at 1bar, BUT the mid range and bottom end is a fair bit stronger.

By comparison as the 2530 makes around 230 rwkw at 1.2bar, you should be expecting around 240rwkw at 1.2bar from the 2535.

the guy who only made 190 at 1.7 bar obviously had huge problems.

lets not start this again.

if you read my post properly, you would've seen that i mentioned 250fwkw (flywheel kw) and not rwkw.

no i haven't seen one of these on an RB25, and what i have mentioned is what is advertised by HKS themselves.

also, i believe the GT2540 might be laggy in a twin configuration on an RB26, but i'm sure they're quite good as a single on an RB25.

check the link that i provided for the power curve, it's just as peaky b/w 3000 - 4000rpm (only more powerful) as the 2530 on the RB20.

Yep, I have seen the link, sorry your fwkw confused me a bit, as I am used to either hp, bhp, rwhw, awhp - and havent seen that expression before.

I did have a look at that link, and noticed the 2535 has more down low, but sacrifices 13 hp up top.

Sorry if it offends, but I have seen a less than glowing report on one of these turbos (2540) on a SR20 in Zoom or HPI (cant remeber which). I would really love to see if the guys who set it up got it all wrong or not, but until I see a dyno, or hear a report from someone who owned one, why should I believe otherwise? Also, as you mention, the 2540 has a really poor rap from gtr owners.

You say lets not start this again, but you quote very poor figures for a GT2535, then go on to say you want at least a 2540, which I think is unfair if you havent seen a 2540 in action AND how do you know what trbs wants in a turbo, all he asks is 'are these any good' Your words here appear to be that of a salesman, not someone wanting to help someone assess the suitability of a specific turbo he asks about.

I think this is abit misleading, as you havent actually seen how this turbo goes on an RB 25, nor have you seen how a 2535 goes. The post about the 2535 on RB20 only shows that the info you provided is not really appropriate, as the website quotes the power at only just under a 2540.

I have seen dynos for a 2530 on RB25, which is smaller again than a 2535. and they go quite well, esp if someone is looking for an upgrade that provides a good midrange with reasonable top end (230rwkw at 1.2bar). By comparison, the 2535 has better bottom end and better top end.

Its nice of you to try and sell your mates turbo, but I believe your posts are somewhat miss leading, as you are not presenting the facts you have in an unbiased manner - this would be somewhat confusing for someone who is looking for info on a turbo.

trbs - I am sorry if I have added any confusion, but I would just like to suggest you make as sure as possible any information you see on here is as valid as possible before you make a decision. A turbo costs alot of money and the right turbo for you will be different to what someone else may want.

From the graphs on the HKS site, the 2535 will deliver a better power band for the street, where you spend more time at between 2-4000rpm than you do at 6-7000rpm. I have been in an rb2530 powered RB20 Cefiro, and it was an awesome setup. Sly33 has a 2530 in an R33, and he loves it. By comparison, the 2540 appears more laggy than either - the top end gains appear only marginal.

RS500 good luck selling the turbo for your mate.

firstly, i am not a salesman and never have been. If i can help someone out with some info that i know of, i will share that with them.

yes, i haven't had first hand experience with the GT2540 on a RB25 but I commented on the GT2540 simply for the fact that 'In my opinion I' believe it is better suited to the RB25 based on the information and data/specs which i have seen.

Trbs didn't specify his requirements/application for the turbo so i don't know what he wants from it, therefore, i comment on what i would prefer on that engine fomr the info which i read form the manufacturers website.

This information obtained by the manufacturer's website is what i use and should be used by all customers as to draw their own conclusions on what the HKS turbo's are capable of and then to make their own decision on what to buy.

If u have noticed in many of my posts in the past, i always try to provide specs, websites, etc (which you have referred to also) so that people (out there) can take my comments and use the data to understand more about the topic and to be able to make their own decision so don't go thinking you're some authoritive figure on turbo matching.

i do believe that the GT2540 has been found to be laggy in a twin configuration on a RB26DETT, but i believe it is quite well suited to the RB25 as a single turbo, given the larger engine capacity, it wouldn't be laggy at all.

My comment regarding the GT2535 on the RB20 was based on what i saw on my friend's dyno, so given that info, it has left a sour impression on me. Maybe the car had problems in the setup/tune which is why it didn't make the power u state, but at the same time, that's what it made, so that's what i told.

also, your claim (even though inconsistent - last time it was a RB20) that a GT2530 can make 230rwkw on an RB25 @ 1.2bar is only as valid as my one, as you could be telling figures from a high reading dyno, therefore, we cannot take these comparisons into consideration.

That's a pretty hard comparison when your friend is running a RB25 which is 500cc larger than the RB20 that i mentioned.

It's OK Steve, I'll finish, rather than start. I have tried 2540's on an SR20, on an RB20 on an RB25 and even a pair on an RB26. I have yet to find an standard or highly modified engine that suites them. I think they are a grossly mismatched turbo between compressor and turbine (ie; either the turbine is too small or the compressor is too big).

I have at least a dozen dyno graphs to support my views, when someone comes up with one the proves me wrong, then I will apologise to HKS. I have had this out there for over 2 years and no one has even come close.

    • I seem to the be only person that is using a Haltech 2500 on an NA motor, I've installed a Bosch DBW throttle body to the OEM intake manifold and am having problems maintaining AFR even with the wideband o2.  It will run extremely rich at idle and up to redline, but under load it will go extremely lean in the 20s and i'm essentially having to rev it over 4k and feather the clutch to get it up to speed.  I've read a few other threads of about the butterfly, it seems removing the vacuum to it is supposed to have it remain open, i've noticed no difference under 4k with the vacuum line to it plugged.  I'm hoping someone here has had luck using the NA manifold with Haltech, and if they happen to have a tune for it.  
    • I don't know any details, but I really wouldn't be surprised if they do it as a LHD only version, at least initially.
    • Thanks for the replies everyone. Definitely a coolant push. Oil catch can is empty and always has been. As the engine is out now I'll be having a good look over things. I do have some detonation on the piston tops from a trigger issue back about 5 years ago. I felt it and shut off then bought a new ecu and changed the trigger. Never been an issue since. It never hurt the power, its made almost 80hp more since that incident but I will pull the bearing caps to take a look. If the bearings are damaged I will do a bottom end refresh. Head is being re conditioned at the moment and the block will be cleaned and checked to ensure it's flat. I'll go with a kameari gasket and see how it ends up. The other thing I'm not super keen on is the cylinder colours. I suspect this is from the inlet manifold. The plan will be to put it back together, retune and then stick a plazmaman billet inlet on it and retune. I'm happy with the power, if it makes a little more, then great, but I would rather just make everything more efficient at this stage.

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
