Subject: : PREDICTED RAIN EVENT - HERBERT AND LOWER BURDEKIN 22-27/12/2010

Good afternoon all

I received the attached email from *, * and thought it relevant to pass on.

During a teleconference with the State Disaster Management Group this morning advice was provided by the Bureau of Meteorology of the potential for extreme weather conditions to impact on the Herbert and Lower Burdekin area between Wednesday 22/12/2010 through the Christmas weekend to Monday 27/12/2010. The rainfall will be associated with a low that will move with the monsoonal trough and be positioned off Townsville on Friday.

Current models suggest rainfall of 100-200mm a day and the possibility of periods of up to 500mm day with the bulk falling Christmas Eve into Christmas day after which the low is expected to move inland.

As the week end approaches and the rain commences and the low approaches, further modelling will be carried out by BOM to develop more accurate predictions of the weather over the weekend.

BOM advise the low has a poor likelihood of developing into a cyclone and suggest that if it did, it would be associated with extremely heavy rain fall rather than winds.

Kind regards
