Hey all,

My R33 has been having some issues. When I reverse, I can hear a clunk noise from the passenger side front suspension/wheel area and I can feel it through the steering. If I hook the steering to one direction, it feels like something is moving, like the wheel will turn at a smooth motion then at one point it just jerks and it feels like the wheel clunked.

This is really really hard to explain. originally everytime I done a U turn I would get a clunk noise which turned out to be my castor rods with broken bushes, so I replaced them with an aluminium rod.

What could cause these weird symptoms? Nothing really happens when I'm driving at normal speed, its only when reversing or parking which involves alot fo wheel turning.

The car has been in an accident but everything is very straight(it was minor). Could it be the sway bar? Sway bar links? The suspensions is tein coilovers.

If anyone here is in Sydney and has any idea I can show you the car.

was gona say it sounds like flogged out castor rod bushes, til i read that ^^^^ next guess would be cv's...if u havent already id be making sure everything is nice n tight. i learnt my lesson the hard way :blush:

Its a series two gtst. What are CV joints? I thought they were just on front wheel drive cars and rear wheels just have bearings at the front. I'm gonna change my sway bar links, there is too much play in them.

Ill check everything is tight tomorrow. Are CV joints something I can do my self?

sorry ur right its not a cv joint...the part im talking bout i duno what its called, its one of the joints in the steering rack. my mate just did it to his car.he damaged one of the joints so at low speeds, especially in reverse when u turn the wheel to a particular spot it would jolt the wheel and make a clunking noise, but that was only when the wheel reached one point....yeah good idea mate, if theres too much movement in them, could well be ur problem, ive never taken them out so cant help ya on that one.

i flogged out two sets of castor rod bushes in a week on my old s13 coz i didnt do a proper check after mounting a curb.. can never be too careful :thumbsup:

I think you're onto something. My dad inspected the car and he recons the guy drove up a gutter pretty badly and caused some damage and some very minor panel damage. It looks like the structure is sound but it was evident to me the car has been in an incident. The headlight mounts are broken but the headlight in tact. Ive got the steering rack and all the components in my old car.

I'm waiting for my brother to move his box and motor out of the garage so I can extract the motor from my car and get to the parts I need. Gonna get a whiteline sway bar with new mounts and replace as much rubber crap as I can.

    • Nah that is not actually a lot. Just painting my GTR frontend and the little bits to make sideskirts/nismo flare pieces work correctly/fit on the sedan/mount up correctly came to about $7000. Is it a lot? Sure. None of this is economical. Economy would be shelling the car and buying a 2010 Corolla to commute in. The perspective of all of this is different.
    • I have the 2025 build re003s’ on my 06 XT Forester Turbo and I quite rate them for street wet and dry
    • I don't see any issues here. I've been saying all along this is a big job, the price reflects that.  When the car comes back perfect I'm sure it will feel like money well spent. 
    • Remember, take original quote. Double it. Then add a bit more. It's how any project goes.
    • So, I started this repair and got as far as "fixing" the holes with some fibreglass. God all those years working on boats came back quickly. I decided I'd reach out to some rust guys just to see what they would say about it. I came across a guy about 40 mins away and went to see him. He said the windscreen needs to come out, that there might be some more bits around the windscreen and he'd quote them at the time. But his quote was $300 to remove and replace windscreen and $3k for the damage he can see. He said he could respray the roof for $1200 and the bonnet for another $800 (somebody has previously rattle canned it, its horrendous). This is $5300 + any small additional bits. It's a lot, I get that and the name of one of my fave youtube channels 'Not Economically Viable' comes to mind.  I'm not being financially rational, but I've taken him up on the quote. He's opening a new shop in November with more room, so we're waiting for that. I'll leave the currently missing headliner out until then. I'm looking forward to it being fixed and having the paint looking nice again (lots of clear coat issues on the roof too). / flame suit on.
