Has anyone fitted an original R32 GTR steering wheel from an earlier model to a later model?? eg; fitting a steering wheel from a 1990 model to a 1994. I know that they are physically different, but look like they would still be interchangeable.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

i have an update :)

my steering wheel from my 89 gtr fits my 94 gtr - no difference at all...unless my wheel is actually a later model wheel, how can i tell?

ive added a pic of the steering column with the wheel removed from my 94 gtr & a pic of the wheel which came off my 89 gtr.

can anyone explain the key differences between a 89 wheel & 94 wheel? is my wheel an early or late model?

waxhead - does your early model wheel look like mine on the back of it?

Marko, it appears that your steering wheel is the earlier version, and is the same as mine. it is hard to explain the difference between the two, but if I can find a picture of the newer wheel, I will post it here. Thanks for the update. I have all ready sent my steering wheel off for a re-trim, so will fit it next week when it returns. Do you a picture of your steering wheel fitted??

Early to late are definitely different, don't use an early on a late car or vice versa. A really weird hicas fault occurs after driving it for a few minutes. It sets the steering wheel angle sensor in the wrong spot.

What is in the steering wheel that does this??

Marko, have you driven your car with the new steering wheel fitted?? Did any HICAS alarms come up??

my retrim should be about $200. Millaine trimmers in Perth

i have driven my 94 gtr with early model wheel & no faults (as yet)

i do have the tomei hicas lock bar in it though, would that mean that its to use the wheel in my car as my hicas is ineffective?

this is the kit i have:

http://www.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://image.nengun.com/catalogue/original/nengun-0060-00-tomei-hicas_lock.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.nengun.com/tomei/hicas-lock&h=138&w=194&sz=8&tbnid=UDHSwa3NIyUNGM:&tbnh=73&tbnw=103&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dtomei%2Bhicas%2Block%2Bkit%2Bpics&zoom=1&q=tomei+hicas+lock+kit+pics&hl=en&usg=___JDFs3sVQltxCtQX-NVqrIdxYtI=&sa=X&ei=y-EoTeLTBYz0caS9yKsB&ved=0CBsQ9QEwAA

The steering angle sensor is in a different spot. The 2 cut outs are, its been a while, about 30 degrees out. You may not notice the hicas acting up if you have a lock bar but on a stocker the car does a "shimmy" after about 10 minutes of driving and then the hicas light will come on. You can check if the steering wheel is in the right position if you go into hicas self test, from memory it involves turning the wheel and stomping on the brake within a certain time (im sure theres a tutorial somewhere).

i'm looking at putting a new steering wheel in my gts-t, i'm going to assume the gts-t and gtr wheels are both held on the same

what is exactly involved in getting the steering wheel off? do you need to take the plastic off around the steering column?

Nah, mate just remove the horn button from the steering wheel and undo the 19mm nut. Don't undo the nut all the way unless you have a proper steering wheel puller, or else you'll wear the steering wheel in the face.

thanks for clarifying & yes i rnoticed that the sensors were in a different position.

in terms of physical appearance, is the early model different to the late model? the face looks the same but i think the plastic boss is slightly different on the late model as it branches off to the each spoke...

also, my late model has an airbag warning on the drivers visor, did the late model have an airbag?

That's the exact difference. I ended up with two early ones and a late one in a hunt for a mint wheel. I put a later model wheel on my 1989 GTR and the HICAS was unaffected because of my Tomei lock kit (LOL). At first, I was concerned and posted a thread. Then I did it anyway as no one knew the answer and tested it, the car is all good.

Although, after suspension work at a workshop the HICAS was out before I locked it, coming on at 80km/h in a straight line is a funny feeling!

good to hear - my hicas wont be affected

Where are you buying your wheels from/ having them retrimmed ?

If they are retrimmed do they look as good as standard ?

I never bought a re-trimmed wheel, just paid a fair bit for a mint stocker.

interesting post.. i bought a mint replacement steering wheel to replace the aftermarket one.. i currently have the hicas bulb out of the cluster.. but it did bring the light on.. never realised there were two different versions for the 32.. hope someone can post pics of both early and late model

did u fit an early model wheel on a later model car or the other way around?

Early model wheel:

Notice the plastic which follows the wheel spokes from behind? The later model doesn't have that and is significantly lighter. The sensors are in different for the HICAS which you can't see and I think the horn works differently, too... Going off shady memory here.

Late model wheel:

No plastic following spokes, just a plastic ring around the boss.

    • ok so if i wanted to go 18's i would go for 8's  in front 30+ or 32+ off set at front and the back 9 would be ok? what offset should i aim for.. then can i do some  hunting for wheel rim choices..
    • Absolute f*cking nightmare. I had to take breaks constantly, and I was always pissed off when I got home. The line split in Italy on day 2 (we drove from the Netherlands), lol. Driving any narrow European town was... well, sh*t.   Appreciate it man. Here, I'll just drop a favourite from the load I took on Saturday.   I'll update here when things happen with the car, the thing is, with stock power and almost everything chassis-wise taken care of, there really are no problems. 268,000kms now and counting.
    • Ah! I actually managed to snag a lightly used set.... that aren't so suitable for me right now. They don't work on a GTT without some cutting or creative heat moulding. I thought about reselling them myself cause I didn't want to murder them, but it looks like I'm probably going to attempt to murder them/melt them because I may as well. @GTSBoy @PranK can somebody close this thread?
    • Hey mate,  I have a set, one is slightly damaged but wont be noticable once installed.  Shoot me a message if your still after them
    • I couldn't wait But, the black constant tension hose clamps were too thick and there wasn't enough clearance at the T/B and I couldn't get it to seat properly, so I had use a silver one there I also added some 3" silicone over the alloy bit that goes through to hole on the radiator support as it looked like it was sitting on the edge of the hole in the radiator support, I never noticed a rattle or anything, but there was a witness mark It is basicly done, and I can live with the silver hose clamp at the T/B, I will get a black clamp for the head vent though where it is attached to the bulkhead fitting  It never stops...LOL, only issue now with the shock tower brace is it slightly touches the under bonnet liner now, if I leave it it will either wear some paint off the brace where it touches, or damage the liner, so I removed the liner to see what I have to work with, with the liner removed I have about 20mm of clearance, but sadly the middle part of the underside of the bonnet is only dusted with paint and looks crap, so I cannot have that, but.... as I have a roll of Carbuilders premium under bonnet insulation in the garage laying around that is only 5.5mm thick (we were going to use it on the boys Patrol, but he crashed the front of it a few months and it was written off, hence why he now drives my old Honda Accord Euro), I'll use the OEM liner as a template and get the Carbuilders stuff fitted up to cover that dusted paint up
