hi guys, I've just spent the past hour trying to decide with set up will be betterfor my R32 skyline GTS-TI've had a problem with my AFM getting dirty and acting funny come time ago and i'm currently doing some minor stage 1 mods.so far i'm set on a ARC super induction box as my intake, Blitz FMIC and suspension upgrade etc... I will upgrade my fuel sys and turbo eventually but not too soon also so i'm looking for something that is easily tunes even if i upgrade alittle bit at a timeWhen i was finding out about the FMIc upgrade, i was told that they r32 gts's run into driverbility issues when running AFM due to the ecu seeing increased airflow and AFM signal tops out.I'm currently looking at upgrading my system to the Link G4 plugin sysG4 Plug-In - Quick Fit Engine Management — Link Engine Management Systems - plug-in & wire-in aftermarket ECU'sand it states "Enjoy you car now that it makes exciting power, idles beautifully, starts cleanly and drives smoothly" and it seems too good to be true, but these are all i'm after.. but i dont know much about map sensors so i'm a bit scared. i just want something really good and reliable and this seems to be the one.. but will it be still ok if i dont plan to make my car into a track monster??I've read the pros and cons of both AFM and MAP systems but it's still not clear which way i should go, I know skyline owners had numerous issues with their afm's in the past but if my car is being built for reliability as the top priority and is used as a street car as a daily driver what would you guys go for?any feedback about the link G4 or any other recommendations will be much much appreciated thanks in advance

for a daily i'd stick with an AFM, but that isn't to say you can't get the same sort of results from a map sensor. depending on what sort of power you are looking at, i'd say to look into getting a nistune for your ecu. bang for buck it's probably one of the best ecu's around. installed and tuned should cost you around $1000, and with the money you save over other ecu's you could upgrade the AFM to a z32 unit.

cheers for the input, so the nistune is a separate unit on its own??

or is it a factory ecu with a chip in it?

and I have heard the z32 + niistune set up to be a very affordable set up but if money wasnt an issue would you still reccomend the nistune it over the Link G4 plug in + dyno

i'm purely wanting something that isnt gonna cause me headaches on the long run..

go map sensor. the resolution is pretty much the same either way, its just that map sensors are a bit cleaner and easier to tune when plotted on a fuel table.

when tuning with an AFM you have to see at which voltage the AFM is reading at different boost levels at different RPM then tune from there. with a map sensor you're already tuning RPM vs. psi, bar, mPa.. etc. so you always know which AFR's you want at whatever boost you will be running and you can just go ahead and tune. and most stand alone ecu's eliminate the AFM and run an internal map sensor, which also means a cleaner engine bay.

AFMs are a pain in the ass IMO.

edit: go for a link or vipec. they are both great ecu's that dont require a map sensor. you plug it in, do the little wiring mods you need to do, throw away the AFM and you're off. if you ever want to run a bigger setup you just buy a greater resolution map sensor. its much easier then wiring up an AFM. its even easier then throwing out your AFM.

    • I know people cry at the price of the Getrag 12-14k for a conversion now, but it really is a nice mid point. Not going to get change from 10k on a gearset installed.  $30k++ for sequential.   I know you run the risk of a damaged used one and parts are hard to get but as a street car gearbox its really hard to beat. If you enjoy a more traditional manual, its the choice no question.
