Hey guys,

I'm in the market for a new helmet, I've taken a good look around online and the prices seem to vary a lot, but without seeing them and trying any on I can't be even close to sure of what I want (or what size my head actually is). I've taken a look at a few general threads on here, but I was wondering if there were any good shops around hobart where I could actually go in try them on and whatnot.

There doesn't seem to be anyone against any brand in particular as far as I've seen, but if you've had a bad experience with one I'd be interested to hear about that also.

Thanks,

Jay

P.S. This may be a stupid question but is a motorbike helmet okay for car motorsport? Would it be a good idea to go to a motorbike retailer for this?

Yeah I use my old MotoX helmet for car racing. Just as long as it's got that silver sticker on it with the ticks.

If you're after a cheap lid like a RJays or something, buying locally is probably the best option, but if you want something special I'd buy online. I'd definitely go to a shop and try some on though, a helmet that's too big wont protect you at all because your head will just be rattling around inside it. When you try it on it should be a snug fit, not scull crushingly tight but snug, as it loosens up a bit later. Different brands are different shapes too so a M in one size might be an XL in another. I used to have an XL in my RJays but now I've got a TLD and that's a M.

Hey guys, sorry for not replying sooner, just got back from a weekend up in Weldborough with some mates. Sounds like I'll have to pay Hamish at Revolution Racegear a visit over the next week, thanks for the tips :)

Hey Guys,

Ended up picking one up from Revolution Racegear this afternoon, really friendly and great service. Will definitely be making another trip there soon to look at all the goodies they have :)

Thanks for the tips

While you were in there did you spot any bucket seats that would contain a larger gentleman?

I didn't see any, but I also wasn't really looking either. I'm looking into some R33 GTR seats which I know fit a mate of mine perfectly who was probably about your size, fantastically comfortable and hold you much better than the standard GTS25T seats. You probably don't want these if it's just for a track car, but if they're for a daily I reckon they're pretty much a perfect balance between comfort and slight street performance.

upstairs he has heaps of seats in all sizes send him an email hambarr @ bigpond.com

I had no idea there was an upstairs... I was in there again yesterday picking up a fire extinguisher and whatnot, where the hell is the staircase? I'm personally of the belief that either you're lieing, or there's a teleporter built into one of the corners in the room. Most likely the second option, technology these days...

Yeah I checked it out on Saturday morning, really nice shop, I could spend a lot of money in there....

The staircase is in the back lefthand corner, went up there and tried a few bucket seats, none fit :( Damn my large child bearing hips...

I was thinking about going the GTR seat option but as it's a track only car I kind of wanted some bucket seats. I tried them out and they're pretty much like my WRX seats, just a little bigger.

What brand of skid lid did you end up getting ? looking at an Arai myself

I went for the RJays Striker ll, second cheapest for $170 but seems very comfy. Didn't want to break the bank for my first day on the track, will see if I definitely want to continue on with it and then start spending more I reckon. Arai though, well known brand, which model are you looking at?

The RJays also had a separate set of awesome packaged up with it, as the brand name is actually my initial and name. I might have to grab a permanent marker and change it to "R.Jay's" to mark it like the primary school kid I am on the inside. Lets face it, it's much more hygienic than some of the other options of marking your helmet.

Looking at getting the Arai GP-6s , and adding the mirrored blue visor .Might airbrush a design on it down the track .

I like the look of the Rjays helmets , whats size did you get ?

I ended up getting the large, the medium fit alright but would have been annoying over time I reckon.

What are you planning to take out on the track now that you've sold your R33, have you found a replacement already?

I'm eying off a very cheap 33 in Melbourne .Its a bit scruffy but will tidy up well for a track only car.

Could always take my land Rover out on track , least I'd win the body role contest if nothing else

If you end up grabbing it and turn it into a track only car I'd be very interested in hearing details about the build, shove up a build thread somewhere or something :) Either that, or take your land rover out, but give me some warning because there's no way that much body roll should go unfilmed :P

I got a scruffy R33 for like $3500 and put a cage in it, check the build in my sig.

You should keep the Landy and use it to tow your Track car :D

Yeah the 33 i was looking at was a hail damaged vehicle , but only $3,000 . Got the red eye flight to Melbourne to check it out , but the bastard sold it half hour before i got there .

    • Nah, OEM washer bottle and brake fluid reservoirs are fine I don't know what it is with the plastic that Mazda used, some plastics, like the washer bottle and brake fluid res are fine, and still look new after 20 years use, where as the coolant expansion tank, and PS reservoir, that I replaced with new OEM items when I first got the car, turned yellow and started getting brittle a few years later If the dirty yellow stained plastics didn't trigger me there wouldn't be an issue, but they did, much like the battery bracket....... Meh As for going back to work full time to support car stuff, nope, why, because I own a Mazda NC MX5, not a Nissan R series Skyline 🤣
    • I've never heard of CJ-motor, so can't advise you on them. I'd just go straight to GCG for a GCG highflow though. Seems no point to use a middleman. I'm somewhat surprised that the price on the CJ site is lower than the GCG retail price. Even though CJ would get a discount of some sort, you would hardly expect them to give up so much margin. Maybe the price is out of date? Having said that "I'd go to GCG"...when I did my highflow, I went to Hypergear. I did this https://hypergearturbos.com/product/rb25dethighflow/#tab-dyno-results with the R34 OP6 450HP profile. With the BB centre (extra $400) and intially with the standard boost actuator, but I eventually got him to send me the high pressure one when I got to the point of being able to actually use it. Ends up costing the same sort of money as the GCG highflow, but this is, of course, the turbo that I KNOW has a shorter length core and so moves the comp cover rearwards. The GCG apparently doesn't do that. My mechanic also swears by the GCG highflow, given that we have another turbo rebuilder who does something essentialy the same as theirs, using Garrett wheels. He says it stands up at really low revs and makes good power. I haven't pushed my HG highflow past ~240-250rwkW yet (should have a little more in it, but unclear how much) and it does have a fairly gentle boost ramp. OK, it's much better now that I have gotten my boost controller tuned up on it.  A lot of my earlier unhappiness was because I couldn't keep the wastegate flap as closed as it needed to be (including some mechanical issues). I'd still prefer it to boost up nearly as quickly as the stocker, and it certainly a bit slower than that. So maybe the GCG one is worth the first look (for you).
    • Ok thanks 🙂 I will higly consider this. Any "known" company for a good reviews and experience to send that off? Is that CJ-motor good one? Or go straight to GCG site? I need to use VPN to even find some of those "shops" let alone access them 🙂
    • You can literally put in as much WMI as it takes to quench the combustion totally (and then back it off a little, obviously), and it will keep making more and more power. The power comes from the cooling effect of the water (and the meth) and the extra fuel (the meth, which also has massive octane). It is effectively exactly like running E85. One might be slightly better than the other, but they are damn close. But with either you can lean on the boost or the timing (or both) waaaay more than with just petrol and the results are similar. Here's the first thing I googled for an anecdotal bit of evidence. Can't access the attachment without being a gold member, but it is there for the getting if able to, or searched up elsewise perhaps. https://www.hpacademy.com/forum/general-tuning-discussion/show/wmi-vs-e85/
