Hi all,

So soon i'm going to be in the market for a new car. I'm looking for opinions of what I should go for, I'm torn between 3 cars right now .... R32 GTR (Not really fond of how it looks) .. R33 GTR or a S15 Silvia (6sp turbo).. I currently drive a R34 but meh... I love how they look, But im slowly falling out of love with it. And I simply can't afford a 34GTR right now. Previously I also had an RX7 on my mind, But from what i've researched they take a lot to maintain and probably not good for an every day driver?

Any help would be great! Thoughts... Or previous experience! ..

I may be open to suggestions for a vehicle not mentioned here, But meh. :)

Cheers,

C

(EDIT - Im not on my Ps... have not been for many years, No driving restrictions etc)

Honestly mate, id go with the S15 myself but thats just me, theyre a newer car..they look fresh and you see a lot less of them driving around..alot of the older GTRs floating around have already been worked and thrashed, you can pick up a decent sil but your going to want to put a bit of power into it straight away if youve been driving a 34 i own one myself and ive been in a lot of different imports..the standard SR20det's are pretty sluggish imo but if you can deal with that go for it, if you dont mind sacrificing looks and age id go with the 32, youll have a lot of fun in that

Thx for the advice mate, Is there a reason why people seem to recommended going for 32gtr over 33gtr? I can't work it out (other than price obviously - But its not a huge difference)

Yeah hes not wrong, they just have a much nicer body shape and also scream drift to a lot of people if thats what floats your boat..from personal experience all i can say about RX7s is stay the hell away from them they chew oil like nothing else, theyre a pain in the ass to maintain and fix..and imo sound like shit when not run properly, at the end of the day its all up to you i guess..perhaps take a few cars for a run if you can, ive got a 32GTR, s15 and rx7 all around owned by friends here that i could take out any time too bad you werent closer id be happy to give you a look at them

Thats what I thought, in regards to the 33 over a 32... but I just could never understand it lol. Personally I think the 33s are much nicer looking. I'll probably eliminate the 32gtr off my list now that I know there's no major advantage in having it (yeah im aware of the AWD to RWD thing :P).

I've driven 33gtr and a s15... The 33 was the first AWD i've ever driven, and I must say... it just didn't feel quick.. I don't know if thats natural, But hmm.. The silvia was heavily modded, So obviously it had a fair bit of "get-up-n-go" .. Im slowly leaning towards the s15... But I told myself a long time ago i'd never own a 4 cyl lol, and have only ever owned skylines. So it's hard to turn my back on a yummy GTR.

Any other suggestions out there?

I sold my R34 GTT and bought myself a '94 R32 GTR V-spec II.

IMO, go the GTR. The S15 will be too similar to your GTT and you'll slowly fall out of love with it just like you did with your R34 ermm.gif

Once you go GTR, there's no way you'll ever look back :P

Anyone else have any pearls of wisdom? :)

Sit back, have some Chardonnay and have a look at quite a few R33 GT-Rs.

The guy who bought mine looked for 13 months before he was satisfied.

Consider... http://www.japlinkmo...zoom.php?id=262

Car comes with genuine wty. It looks as if it's due soon for the major 80,000km service.

If you inspect and like it, ask him nicely for the major 80,000km service to be done for free.

Hmm so a 33 gtr is certainly worth considering? :) Thanks guys , Anyone with a GTR, is it normal for it to.. not feel as quick as a RWD, or did I just have a bad experience? lol

Its so hard to go backwards to an older model :( ... But if I find the right one i'll go a 33GTR

a stock GTR is definitely gonna feel slower compared to a modded s15.

my mates s15 makes around 210rwkw and is really responsive compared to my gtr.

but while hes spinning in 3rd ill just drive away from him thanks to the awd.

having said that my gtr should be a lot quicker soon thanks to cams/-5s

also if you choose the 33gtr, go for a series 3

Is there a way to differentiate between series 1,2,3? :)

Feeling slower won't be because of AWD vs RWD, but simply that the Silvia's are smaller, being modded, noisier, probably stiffer etc, "noisepower" is a massive part of how quick a car seems. My mates 180 has always felt HEAPS quicker than my 32, but when I was running 12.7, he ran 12.5.. As Ten Four said though 33s feel slower again, my mother (yes, really) has a 33 with -7s, PFC, Cams, Cooler, cam gears it's lowered and heaps stiffer than mine (mine has -7s, exhaust and filter) yet mine feels quicker... As an R32 fan though, Buy a 33.. They are a far better car, and Shedloads better value than 32s.

    • Also, I logged some data from the ECU for each session (mostly oil pressures and various temps, but also speed, revs etc, can't believe I forgot accelerator position). The Ecutek data loads nicely to datazap, I got good data from sessions 2, 3 and 4: https://datazap.me/u/duncanhandleyhgeconsultingcomau/250813-wakefield-session-2?log=0&data=7 https://datazap.me/u/duncanhandleyhgeconsultingcomau/250813-wakefield-session-3?log=0&data=6 https://datazap.me/u/duncanhandleyhgeconsultingcomau/250813-wakefield-session-4?log=0&data=6 Each session is cut into 3 files but loaded together, you can change between them in the top left. As the test sessions are mostly about the car, not me, I basically start by checking the oil pressure (good, or at least consistent all day). These have an electrically controlled oil pump which targets 25psi(!) at low load and 50 at high. I'm running a much thicker oil than recommended by nissan (they said 0w20, I'm running 10w40) so its a little higher. The main thing is that it doesn't drop too far, eg in the long left hand fish hook, or under brakes so I know I'm not getting oil surge. Good start. Then Oil and Coolant temp, plus intercooler and intake temps, like this: Keeping in mind ambient was about 5o at session 2, I'd say the oil temp is good. The coolant temp as OK but a big worry for hot days (it was getting to 110 back in Feb when it was 35o) so I need to keep addressing that. The water to air intercooler is working totally backwards where we get 5o air in the intake, squish/warm it in the turbos (unknown temp) then run it through the intercoolers which are say 65o max in this case, then the result is 20o air into the engine......the day was too atypical to draw a conclusion on that I think, in the united states of freedom they do a lot of upsizing the intercooler and heat exchanger cores to get those temps down but they were OK this time. The other interesting (but not concerning) part for me was the turbo speed vs boost graph: I circled an example from the main straight. With the tune boost peaks at around 18psi but it deliberately drops to about 14psi at redline because the turbos are tiny - they choke at high revs and just create more heat than power if you run them hard all the way. But you can also see the turbo speed at the same time; it raises from about 180,000rpm to 210,000rpm which the boost falls....imagine the turbine speed if they held 18psi to redline. The wastegates are electrically controlled so there is a heap of logic about boost target, actual boost, delta etc etc but it all seems to work well
    • hahah when youtube subscribers are faster than my updates here. Yes some vid from the day is up, here:  Note that as with all track day videos it is boring watching after the bloopers at the start.  The off was a genuine surprise to me, I've literally done a thousand laps around the place and I've never had instability there; basically it rolled into oversteer, slipped, gripped and spat me out. On the way off I mowed down one of the instructor's cones and it sat there all day looking at me with accusing cone eyes as I drove past. 1:13:20 was my fastest lap, and it was in the second session, 3rd lap.  It (or me!) got slower throughout the day as it got hotter.
    • It sounds like you want what the Toyota Landcruisers have for their roof racks. Wanna know what you end up with? Rust holes in the roof, and water everywhere...
    • Discovered today that if I select reverse first and take my foot off the brake, then select drive, the drive indicator light works and so does the tiptronic gear indicator.
    • Ok so after much research and talking with knowledgeable people I've got my turbo conversion done and it's all running great other than 1 small issue.  Car has remained auto with the na auto and tcm, I've used a stagea ecu with. NIstune board and everything is great other than my gear selection on the dash. It illuminates park, reverse, neutral, 3rd and 2nd. But nothing drive or what gear your in when you pop it into tiptronic.  I'm sure there is maybe 1 wire in the ecu plug I need to move to rectify this. Does anyone here have any ideas?   Cheers guys
