hi guys, have had this problem for a few months now and the only things that make it vary is the temperature. if it's warm and i put my climate control in full heat mode (hold down the hot button once the climate control is set to 32) it tends to get rid of it sometimes.

the problem: it's really in the lower rpm to be honest (2000 or there abouts) the car really lacks power. it feels amazing before boost while it's cool but once it warms up it becomes a dog to drive. if i go full noise from 2000 rpm in 2nd it feels gutless, i hear boost (to me it sounds like a bit of a boost leak) and it takes a few seconds after hearing boost to feel anything and some days it has the dead spot then it hits you with power, other days it's just dead no matter what...

it doesn't do it until i hear the viscous fan working hard. doesn't usually do it if the day is less that 25 degrees and it goes back to 100% power while it's cool. any ideas? what can i check?

also, i would assume it's not a boost leak if it goes away when cold but it sort of feels and sounds like it?

i have a pretty good imagination :P and i imagine something like a sensor dropping out in the heat and the ecu retards the timing or something wierd like that? i only assume more of an electrical fault because it goes away? seriously frustrating!

Is your cooling system working well? Bleed at the head? distilled water+quality coolant? The factory temperature gauge is a bit crap, so if you can check the actual temperature with Consult if you have std ECU/nistune or the powerfc hand controller if that's what you have. You can also check other sensors while you're at it.

The ECU does have some defenses for over temperature, cant remember what they are... maybe fuel enrichment??

I know that the pfc drops the timing by few degrees if the water teperatutre hits over 85 (or whatever you set it to) i assume its the same with the std ecu? did you check to see if anything can cause the temperature to go up more than usual, eg, coolant, block radiator or hose or something like that.

From my experience (having had cooling issues with my car in the past), the viscous fan on my R34 doesn't really kick in till coolant hits above 95C - and that's getting into 'too hot' territory.

I'd be checking the standard stuff you do for your coolant system:

* that your thermostat isn't broken (opening at correct temperature, the rubber seal hasnt perished

* your radiator cap is working (my nismo radiator cap was causing a good part of my overheating issues - figure that, went back to standard and temps dropped 10C under particular conditions)

* checking your radiator for blockages - these will be impeding the radiator efficiency

* bleeding your coolant system to make sure there's no air-locks

If you're unsure on any of that stuff - take it to a radiator specialist.

went for a drive with nissan scantech running today and by manually advancing the ignition timing i was able to make my problem a lot better and by manually retarding it it made it a WHOLE lot worse. after doing that i closed my adjustments and just recorded the drive home. if anyone has scantech you can view these by opening the program and in the top left under the tab view go engine log and open this notepad file.

i can't upload a .LOG file so i'll upload it as .txt and just change the extension to .log as you save it. scantech will open it then.

running temp.txt

with consult on it i think the highest temp i saw was about 85 degrees and the viscous fan was on at about 75?

    • Nah, they'll do it without a receipt, tell em roughly when it was, that it was cash, youll likely only get store credit, but that gets you some dollars towards the newer better shovel, or other item you need/want later.   Still take it back and have a crack at returning it.
    • Nah. Was just wondering if you were having a small stroke or if there was some slur/gaf/inside joke that I wasn't aware of.
    • That was a fark up, it's Salamanca Place I was thinking of. And now I'm curious as to what potential slur/gaf I have caused with Salamander Road, ha ha!
    • Actually everyone on the roads was really well behaved. The only person that did any minor tailgating was a local hoon in a Turbo Focus. Unfortunately we weren't going the same way so there was no grand initial D touge battle. Lots of people pulled over and let me through. The amount of "Hey man nice car, omg skyline, nice 34 man woo" was suprising. Like really suprising. Like almost annoying. My partner was obviously surprised, she'd never seen anyone in the real world point out the car/like the car/want to chat about the car before, so to have like 3 people per day mention it was notable, I could finally say SEE? SOMEONE THINKS THEY'RE COOL. Everyone was also pretty suprised about the weather. Every day was dry and about ~13-14C. Mount Wellington had a sign that said they close the gates at 9pm and I was heading up there at about ~7:30. It was VERY apparent that conditions were getting significantly worse by the minute on the way up and down. The road on the mountain was terrible though, it's no driving road. I have various suspension related questions now. Luckily it was only about 20 minutes from where we were staying to the top of the mountain as said Google maps. We only had the 2 nights in Hobart. We went to the Farm Gate Market though which was really good - And went down to the Hastings Thermal springs/caves down there during the day. I'd definitely be up for going back again, so luckily there's a few more sights yet to see. Didn't get to do the west coast/queenstown/cradle mountain so this was supposed to be a 'scouting' trip anyway of sorts if I were to one day do/take part in/organize a more car-focused trip. As for the boat, it wasn't bad. Well it was bad, but not in the way you're thinking. We did the night trip which leaves at 6:45 (though you have to be there ~2 hours earlier) and arrives the next morning at about 6am. There is nothing to do on the ship. If you plan accordingly and bring a book/tablet/show to watch/charger you can just chill out, take some Travacalm and just sleep through it. The food there is an extremely basic buffet that costs $32 a plate, or $14 for a $3 pizza. The way back we had a travel kettle and a few different types of cup noodles and made our own tea/coffee in the room. This was a far superior way to do it. At the very least book one of the rooms with beds. I guess as we were in the off season we didn't have room mates. You get an option for rooms with 4 beds (2x bunks) or a room with just the two bottom beds. There's also some option for a deluxe queen bed but it's much pricer. We've been on sleeper trains in Asia before so we figured this is similar (and it was)
