I'm about to order a single din ac control board from the states. This is what you need if you're getting rid of your pos bose integrated stereo (or the non bose integrated). You need this board because the ac controls are all part of the clarion (bose) circuit board and when you remove the stereo you remove the ac controls.

The boards are the same part as in the single din models and retails for around $480 here. That's what Northside Nissan quoted, but I've been in touch with a Nissan/Infiniti dealership in the states and they will send them to me for about $200 (give or take a few bucks). If anyone wants to order one, let me know and you can either deal direct with them or get it shipped with my board and I'll send it on. Whatever. Just wanted to spread the love.:3some:

This is what it looks like. I'll be ordering in the next few days. I'm also going to find out what they charge for steering wheel audio controls as these can be rejigged with a special adaptor to work on most stereos with that capability.

Don't you have to change pretty much the whole centre part of the dash with a non ARX model?

I have read on here that you will need around $1k all up to do it.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong

You need the ac controller, a new facia unless you can very neatly cut the existing one and use the surround that comes with a new 2 din stereo to cover the edges. You can reuse the existing metalwork to hang the new stereo. Oh, and fitting a single din stereo with factory guages would be too hard- you could use aftermarket guages. The factory guages need the wiring harness, sender units etc or whatever- I haven't looked into it but suspect they are well integrated and difficult to add in.

Then comes the part where you either keep the existing bose amp and speakers or replace them altogether. For this, you need a converter box which converts the audio out signals of the new stereo to bose specs, or you replace the bose amps with decent ones, possibly the speakers as well as they are 2 ohm instead of the usual 4(?) etc. It is all a pain but then if your stereo is totally knackered like mine is- with power board issues and junked cd player- then it's the only options open to you. You can even use another converter box to hook up the steering wheel controls to an aftermarket stereo. Alot of the information is on the g35 forums stateside- their cars are very close to ours, with a few wiring differences.

Chris Rogers can do all this work for you, if of course you're in Brissie. Us poor rellies in the wild west have to do it ourselves. I could try a local stereo installer but I don't want to. I see it as a challenge.

As far as cost- well..

ac control board $150 plus postage from states (dealership now has them on special down from 180) so say up to $190

facia $?? diy modified $0 or buy the Metra kit but quality is poorer than Nissan OEM

low level line converter $90

steering controls $75 plus post

steering control converter $80

2 din stereo $250-$1500 depending on taste and flashness

So cheapest would be around $700.

If I'm successful I'll post up a story. If not, I'll burn the damn thing!

Aww man, I'm gunna regret this, there could have been a cheap set of sw controls up for grabs!

metra control unit

Obviously your stereo must have the steering wheel control function for this to work. Usually a 3.5mm socket on the back of the unit with 'remote' marked next to it.

    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
