Hi guys, I have an R33 gtst and have removed vvt and have greddy aftermarket cam gears, as these look nice I have not put the standard cam cover back on. I'm now in the process of wanting to put a clear cam timing cover on as I dont want to run the risk of a bolt or something dropping down onto the belt, but unfortunately the clear ones to suit an rb25 for sale all have the bulge sticking out for the vvt, can an rb26 clear cam cover fit an r33 gtst series 1 without v v t. and does the backing plate line up. Nito http://www.nitto.com.au sell clear cam covers, would an rb26 fit an r33.

There are a few more brands out there but they say RB26 on them and would look silly on an r33, the nitto brand does seem the better option providing it would fit as it only has Nitto printed on the cam cover.

Can anyone help assist if they have done this before as all the people selling clear timing cam covers can not assist me.

You will need to trim the RB25 backing plate slightly and then the RB26 clear cover will fit.

Stupid descision to get rid of the VCT. Basically got rid of the best thing about a RB25.

Indeed. Heres a good example of my R33. Car was tuned to 5000rpm, this is because any further and the dutys were @ 100%, fuelpump dying :( .

First, with VCT OFF. then again with VCT ON. Pretty black and white.

Seat of the pants is pretty clear too. If i was you, i wouldnt worry about pretty cam gears and clear covers. Sell them and spend it on something more worthwhile!

Yes I couldnt agree more, five years ago when I did a full rebuild my mechanic didn't advise me of this, we purchased the greddy adjustable cam gears and tomei poncams, obviously we bought the inlet poncam to suit the greddy gears and not the poncam to suit VCT. for anyone out there which I doubt has done this if you buy poncams you must specify if the inlet is for VCT or not. It was his first skyline he had ever built so there was the first mistake.

But can the adjustable greddy inlet cam gear be adjusted to compromise for no VCT and mine obviously has timing marks -20 + 20 degrees? for those upgrading to aftermarket cam gears do you normally only upgrade the exhaust side on an RB25det.?

Plus when it was built it went in with 210 rwkw and came out with 297rwkw so for me not having VCT wasn't noticable because I gained so much horsepower from rebuild.

When does VCT kick in I thought it was from 5000rpm to 7000rpm?

Would you guys recommend upgrading my inlet cam and putting VCT back on?

VCT is for low to midrange power. Therefore it is enabled pretty much from the second you touch the throttle till around 4000-5000rpm (depending on setup).

HKS and Tomei both do cams to support VCT, however both are 256 duration and 8.8mm lift. Therefore the only reason people usually get rid of VCT is if they want large duration and large lift cams. Otherwise you do not get rid of it.

I personally wouldn't bother trying to get it back as it will cost you a bit of money and if you are currently happy with the setup that is all that matters.

Yeah. Its ON from 1100rpm or so stock till 5000rpm/ish.

We were basically tuning it to find the best pont for it to switch off. But seeing as the pump died we never got to see when the power and torque falls off, as you can see it doesnt look like its stopping anytime soon!

I didnt realize your car was that powerful. If you think it drives fine then dont bother going back if its going to cost alot of money! I just saw it as someone bought gears cos they were pretty and thought theyd help :) haha.

Well I do have tomei poncams 256 duration and 8.8mm lift, isn't that what everyone goes for when upgrading? or are you saying if you go bigger than these cams then you get rid of vvt?

Yeah you would have bought a RB20 inlet cam in those specs. Basically the cams are exactly the same other than the end where the VCT gear bolts on.

So really you could have just kept the VCT and bought the exact same camshaft you have but made for a RB25 VCT inlet.

Yeah well the wost thing about that is when I did upgrade to tomei poncams I did originally buy the one to suit vvt on the inlet, but my bloody mechanic said I bought the wrong one becuase it didnt suit the greddy cam gear so I sent it back and they then sent me the one without vvt which is obviously RB20 inlet cam. Spewing.

I'ld rather have vvt than a greddy cam gear which is set to 0 degrees anyway, whats the use.

Hey I got another question for you guys, I was told earlier in the post that an rb26 clear cam cover (which I just bought) will suit an rb25 without vvt but I will need to trim the rb25 backing plate a little to fit the rb26 clear cam cover.

so my next question is will an rb26 cam cover backing plate fit on an rb25 and line up properly, reason I ask is since I bought an rb26 clear timing cover to go onto an rb25 without vvt wouldn't it be better to buy the backing plate to suit the cam cover so I wont have to trim the rb25 backing plate for hours?

    • HFM BM57 has a "bad" knee point, IIRC. It's not the same thing as the later R chassis MC.
    • The ATTESSA is functionally identical to R34; there were a bunch of JDM models that continued ATTESSA including Fuga/Q70, Skyline/Q50, Cima etc as an option. AFAIK there were no AWD VR30DDTT sold in Australia - it is on my to do list to check regs for racing a LHD car in Targa/ATR/AASA/CAMS events because if I can get the auto to work it would be interesting to run a 4wd car The Ecuteck TCM tuning is the same model as their ECU tuning, they already have it for R35 and Dose's favourite, BMW. You buy "points" to allow your computer to be tuned, buy either a bluetooth (phone app) or bluetooth+USB+Key (phone and PC) dongle, and pay for a tune that will be locked to your tuner ( ). You can also access the tuning software yourself but 1. it is mega expensive and 2. these computers have a billion parameters that intersect, so how could you ever spend enough time on it to get a decent result.

Ha ha ha After reading through this thread, I went on a bit of a research about the Q50/Q60. Now I'm quite intrigued by them! Is the AWD in them more like a WRX where it's always AWD, or is it more like the ATTESSA in the GTRs? By the sound of this TCU tuning, this sounds like a case of someone has made some real software for it, and you just need the right piece of hardware, and then you license that specific vehicle/TCU. Or is this a case of the software will be really expensive so only a few tuners have it, and you still have to pay a license per vehicle?
    • By popular demand.. it was a coil. Got my hands on 1 new OEM coil, replaced with the one that made the less noise difference when I unplugged it while the car was running and started the car up. No stutter and the engine light was gone. I guess I’ll buy the other 5 they have lol
    • No, code 21 is very straightforward. It can only be the things described in that diagnostic flow. In fact it has no way of knowing that the spark plug resistance is out of spec.
