Hey, I just have a concern with my S2 R33 GTS-t which I thought was normal at first but is now making me worried.

Whenever I start my car, I notice after a minute or two that water droplets form inside the exhaust. After around 30secs or so, there is white smoke/steam which is emitted from the exhaust, which I presume is the water droplets evaporating.

I know it's definitely water forming in there as when I run my finger around inside the tip, I can see it's clearly water.

This isn't limited to just cold morning start ups, but anytime during the day whenever I start the car.

I recently had a new Hypergear ATR43G3 fitted and is almost fully tuned (tuner ran out of time) but if it's any help, after the turbo was fitted the car was overheating but the system got bled so it runs ok now. They did use a fair bit of tap water though as they ended up spraying my coolant everywhere so I'll be getting a full cooling system flush soon.

Any ideas or am I being paranoid?

Cheers.

A by-product of fuel combustion is water dude. Unless its spitting coloured droplets, your being paranoid.

Everyone's car does it - just some more noticeable than others due to exhaust temps.

Rest easy

Hey mate, thanks for the reply.

The water droplets only appeared in large quantities after I installed the new turbo and the droplets/steam appear whenever the car is started :(

Nah, it's clear so definelty water.

At first I thought it was a blown head gasket (if it is, then FML!!!), but under the radiator cap and under the oil filler cap I can't see any cross contamination or any milky substance so what could it be that's causing the all-the-sudden condensation?

Could it be the water lines to the turbo wernt done propery and it's going out the exhaust or something?

I think your problem is your looking to deep into things.

You installed a new turbo, and now your noticing all these different things.

It is completely normal for the water droplets to show up. The reason you notice it at startup is because the exhaust isnt hot enough yet.

Take a look around when your driving. You will now probly notice cars shooting water out the exhaust when they take off up a hill. It happens occasionally.

I know when i installed my new ECU and tuned it, i was paying so much attention to how the car felt, id decided that it was no better if not worse, than the stock ECU. Clearly it wasnt :P

Same here, sometimes water droplet forms on the exhaust on a cold day & when the car is running if I put my hand near the exhaust I can feel water vapor.

Same as the OP, that scared the shit out of me & being the pessimistic person I am, I immediately thought about a head gasket failure (or warped head) & started to look at the usual head gasket symptoms but couldn't found anything (other than my head telling me that my car 'seems' to be running crappier than usual) until one day I was driving my dad's Corolla & found that if I put my hand near its pea shooter sized exhaust I can feel also water vapor from the exhaust gas too...

:closed eyes:

Hahaha well I'm glad has similar experiences and I'm just freaking out over nothing

But what would you quantify as "few water droplets"?

Reason being my whole exhaust diameter has droplets (i.e there's droplets all the way around on the inside walls) :(

    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
