Hey ppls.

I'm looking at the Apexi GT Spec Cooler.

Who has one, and what were their results after fitting and how complete was the kit as supplied?

Did you have to make any modifications to it at all??

Rather not many people use them (most here seem to use V-Spl or a HKS Type-S), great coolers, great kits, piss easy fit (even easier than the V-Spl from memory) but $$$ as usual.

from memory RH9, the R34 GTR that was a customer of crd used one, they seem to be a good cooler

The Apexi GT coolers are AWESOME........ I speak in regards to wrx's here (but their quality is outstanding over all products so it would be safe to say the the same coupld be said for a skyline)

They OWN Trust coolers - the reason that not many people run them is that they are a little harder to fit - on a rex they require the battery moved and some chopping on the front bar. The addition farking around is well worth it in the long term as the coolers are superior.

The reason the Trust coollers seem to be more popular I believe is simply a matter of Simplicity and looks. As the Trust coolers are alot easier to fit and come in that slighty polished look which the ricers love, where as the apexi has a silver mat finish.....

The project R34 from HPI used an apexi GT spec cooler. The cooler had a return pipe passing underneath/behind the cooler and coming back up into the stock pipes in the engine bay which is simular to my trust unit. At the end of the day most of the australian coolers do the job well and usually for a cheaper price (unless you go through nengun). If its going to end up costing you more than $1500 I'd have a look around for whats available locally.

Im a big believer in buying reputable Japenese products (FMIC inparticular) over locally made stuff. For the simple fact that companies like HKS and Apexi (im not talking all Jap brands here) spend millions on reserch and development - testing flow, cooling efficiency, end tank design, etc... I would always purchase a researched and tested product over one that a local shop whacks up..having said that I do believe that their are a few aussi shops that make outstanding products.

At the end of the day I would also pay more for the Jap stuff than the local stuff.

Well I ordered my trust cooler from the workshop here as at the time I wasnt completely aware of nengun and I also didnt want to go through the hassle of having it shipped here and being hit with GST and duty or having it arrive with a big dent or hole in it. I paid $2500 for it, if I knew what I knew today then I would have just gone with a local made core. I too believe that the japanese equipment is better than the local equipment, but I dont think its worth the extra I paid for the cooler. Having said that I also have the trust turbo and blitz boost controller matched to a turbosmart wastegate and a wolf3d ecu and so far the package has worked extremely well... I just cant wait for the rebuild to be finished, the engine run in and around 1.2-1.4bar dialed in :)

I have the rspl not the vspl kit that nengun has been sending in. The rspl is a better core with end tanks/piping that come back under the cooler so that it uses the stock cooler pipes into the engine bay... ie: very litte modification and thus costs more, but you're right $2500 is a tad rich. I havent run the 1/4 recently, lasttime I went down I could only manage a 13.8 with a 2.7s 60' time at around 115mph. As you can see I cant drive :) I kept on changing too early and the turbo kept falling off boost. I'm waiting till the engine is done then we are having a Drag Combat day where the track will be fully prepped, I expect to run low 12's on street tyres... maybe a high 11, just need to get in a few good runs and get the launch right.

    • Impossible to remove the housing while turbo is installed on the manifold on the engine. So I have to do it anyways. I plugged it so there will not be any debris in there. Will vacuum aswell 
    • would a r34 gtr hood line up with gt/gtt stock fenders? after latch, front bumper and hinges are swapped for gtr ones? or would the fenders be too low or high in relation to the hood surface? ( I believe seeing somewhere that gtr front fenders use some type of riser for the sides, but do not know how that relates to stock gt/gtt fenders.)    
    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways. 
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.
    • Damn that was hilarious, and a bit embarrassing for skylines in general 😂 vintage car life ey. That R33 really stomped. Pretty entertaining stuff
