Modern medicine is alright...it has definitely extended our average life span. But at the same time, so much of the need for modern medicine is caused by our modern lifestyles themselves. When you simplify the lifestyle, you simplify everything that goes with it. At least you would get to work outdoors lol. Modern technology hasn't really freed up our lifestyles...supposedly we're more stressed and working more hours than ever. Even if we had more free time, we'd just fill it up with shit to do.

Yeah there are animals, off the top of my head all I can think of are tortoises and whales, but on the whole...most in the animal kingdom don't live anywhere as long as we do.

Well one could make the point that our supreme physical and mental attributes are our adaptation to our environment, being Earth. I mean, other cunning animals such as lions use their cerebral thinking to catch prey and sit atop the food chain...hence they are the kings of the jungle.

but lions dont live anywhere near jungles.

Yes there are many animals that dont live as long as we do. But maybe thats what we should be doing? I mean go back to egypt they only live till they were 30-40 on a good week. And Birds how did we adapt? Look around us everything has been changed to suit our needs and desires that is not adapting.

adapting present participle of a·dapt (Verb)

1. Make (something) suitable for a new use or purpose; modify. We never changed, we changed the enviroment.

2. Become adjusted to new conditions.

In which way, shape or form have we adapted to Earth or anything on it? We have invented things so that we can live there that isn't adapting to the condition that is create a subenviroment that suits the animal. I mean i can make a fish live in a desert by giving it a fish tank and a cooling system. But thats not the animal really adapting is it?

Well, we did adapt/change to suit our environment...we didn't go inventing things and sub-environments from the start. What about the hunter-gatherer ages? If you keep in mind that our ancestors (depending which religious or scientific beliefs you subscribe to) roamed this earth thousands / millions of years ago...we did physically adapt over time to suit our environment. Not to mention we evolved from single cell organisms, and evolution is intertwined with adaptation. But whether we physically adapt ourselves or foster an environment to suit us, either is still a form of adapting. Animals would do it too if they had the brains. They dig holes in the ground to hibernate, they build nests...is that not changing the environment to suit the creature?

Looking at your definition of adapting though...it seems to have two broad definitions, the latter of which kind of supports what you said. However, the first definition does not specify if it is the creature of the environment being changed to suit the other. Could be either, and really, adaptation takes place regardless of what is being modified. And for that matter, it's not a completely one sided process either...animals adapt to other animals (predators, prey etc.) adapting, which are legitimately a part of the first animal's environment. It's all too intertwined for us to seperate it like you have. All we can say is that if a species has survived, then it has adapted.

Do you not have an immune system, or have you forgotten it exists?

Are you and everyone around you albinos, where you don't tan in exposure to UV light?

Has your body never had as a coccyx or an appendix?

We might supplement these natural features with developments from our own intelligence, but to say the human body by itself has never adapted (either in the short term with things such as the immune system or melanin, or in the long term with vestigial features) is obviously false. The fact that we're not extinct is proof enough of that.

Yes in the last 10,000 yrs we have evolved to suit our enviromental infulences. Not adapted we never radically altered ourselves knowingly to suit a situation. Tell me in the last 100 yrs of industrilisation have we adapted to any enviroment? All we do is change the enviroment to help us.

Now you're just shifting the goalposts. There was no timeline mentioned in your original definition for "adapt". "Adjusting to new conditions" (as per your supplied Definition 2) would include evolution.

At any rate, my immune system example still applies. You start off without an immunity to a disease, and once infected you either die or that system adapts to deal with it.

As does tanning. Europeans have only lived in Australia for approximately 225 years. The ones that came over on the First Fleet will be as pasty-white as the Poms that still live in the UK today, compared to Anglo Saxons that have lived here all their lives. Their body rapidly (compared to evolution) adjusted its skin tone to suit the local environment.

Of course if you go and then redefine "rapid" down to talking about minutes (rather than your century timeline) then I guess I'd be wrong again.

We do both...as I said it's not a one sided thing.

What creature do you know of that has evolved radically over 100 years? Adaptation and evolution is a very slow process, and about the quickest non-bacterial species to do it are humans, with or without our brains. Case in point, someone from 200-300 years ago would probably die from exposure to a modern day influenza virus...for us it's a week or two off work.

I recall something about white settlers spreading disease to indigenous peeps and many dying from it.

Humans sure have evolved.

As mentioned, look at the immune system, how the immune have evolved to remember the invaders, and produce antibodies to handle those said invaders the next time they attack.

Then the teeth structure of people, molars, incisors, canines indicated that people are herbivores, and we have adapted and evolved to actually be able to handle plant foods and meat as well. The length of intestines are too short relative to body length for a purely plant based diet, and too long for a purely carnivorous diet. Another fact that we actually have adapted to surroundings and food..

Yeah, thread was way too serious.

My take: Global warming is real, its been happening for millenia. We may have helped it to happen this time, but it was likely going to happen anyway just not quite as quickly maybe.

What can we do about it:

1. Panic and form Climate Change committees

2. Allow ppl like Al Gore to find a new career and make heaps of $$$$ which does nothing for any of us.

3. All go back to horses and Amish style living.

4. Have a war or stop all wars [i'm not sure which here].

5. Stop all car racing and any other unnecessary burning of fossil fuels.

6. Make all our armies, navies, and airforce stop doing pointless stuff.

7. Ban Macca's [we all know that GW started with themanyway].

8. Use renewable energy.

9. Make new taxes like Carbon ones

10. bans on all sorts of polluting things like cows farting etc

But it won't help, cos global warming/climate change is a natural thing that occurs irrespective of what anyone does.

BTW I'm an agnostic

Given the widely noted increase in the warming effects of rising greenhouse gas concentrations, it has been unclear why global surface temperatures did not rise between 1998 and 2008

    • Hey Dave, welcome aboard! Good to see another soon-to-be Stagea owner here. The wagons are awesome — plenty of space, still got that Skyline DNA, and loads of potential if you’re into mods. Definitely post up pics when you get it, everyone here loves seeing new builds. What model/year are you looking at?
    • See if you can thermal epoxy a heatsink or two onto it?
    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
    • So, what else.... Power. I don't know what it is making because I haven't done a post tune dyno run yet; I will when I get a chance. It was 240rwkw dead stock. Conclusion from the day....it does not need a single kw more until I sort some other stuff. It comes on so hard that I could hear the twin N1 turbos on the R32 crying, and I just can't use what it has around a tight track with the current setup. Brakes. They are perfect. Hit them hard all day and they never felt like having an issue; you can see in the video we were making ground on much lighter cars on better tyres under brakes. They are standard (red sport) calipers, standard size discs in DBA5000 2 piece, Winmax pads and Motul RBF600 fluid, all from Matty at Racebrakes Sydney. Keeping in mind the car is more powerful than my R32 and weighs 1780, he clearly knows his shit. Suspension. This is one of the first areas I need to change. It has electronically controlled dampers from factory, but everything is just way too soft for track work even on the hardest setting (it is nice when hustling on country roads though). In particular it rolls into oversteer mid corner and pitches too much under hard braking so it becomes unstable eg in the turn 1 kink I need to brake early, turn through the kink then brake again so I don't pirouette like an AE86. I need to get some decent shocks with matched springs and sway bars ASAP, even if it is just a v1 setup until I work out a proper race/rally setup later. Tyres. I am running Yoko A052 in 235/45/18 all round, because that was what I could get in approximately the right height on wheels I had in the shed (Rays/Nismo 18x8 off the old Leaf actually!). As track tyres they are pretty poor; I note GTSBoy recently posted a porker comparo video including them where they were about the same as AD09.....that is nothing like a top line track tyre. I'll start getting that sorted but realistically I should get proper sized wheels first (likely 9.5 +38 front and 11 +55 at the rear, so a custom order, and I can't rotate them like the R32), then work out what the best tyre option is. BTW on that, Targa Tas had gone to road tyres instead of semi slicks now so that is a whole other world of choices to sort. Diff. This is the other thing that urgently needs to be addressed. It left massive 1s out of the fish hook all day, even when I was trying not too (you can also hear it reving on the video, and see the RPM rising too fast compared to speed in the data). It has an open diff that Infiniti optimistically called a B-LSD for "Brake Limited Slip Diff". It does good straight line standing start 11s but it is woeful on the track. Nismo seem to make a 2 way for it.
