so i bought a 300km/h gauge to replace the standard R34 GTT instrument cluster. Finally got the old one out and plugged the new one in, but ive ran into a problem. soon as i plug the 3 plugs on the back in, i get the seat belt and engine lights coming on, even when the key is not in the barrel. the indicators work, but the speedo and revs do not. There are no other lights that illuminated either, just seat belt and engine staying on. It is a brand new dash too.

Has anyone heard of this happening before?

Thanks fellas!

the new cluster is a direct replacement mate, although the speed and rev or on opposite sides to stock...i dont think this could be the problem, i have spoken to a couple of places selling them and they have all said that they are plug n play no worries. so im sending it back and hopefully i get a new one. just a pain in the a.ss.

thanks for your help mate

Series 1 and Series 2 cars use slightly different parts in the Electronics side of things, window switches, etc they went to surface mount electronics on series 2 cars and the wiring harness is slightly different as well.

mine is a 9/2000 build date and the parts off a 99 aren't the same at all.

so that might be the reason ???

hmmm you could be on to something, but, i have asked quite a few people/sellers if they have ever had any problems and all have said not one, always plug and play. Ive got the gauge going back to Nismo, and they are going to look over it/repair it if something is wrong. damn i hate waiting though!

The direct replacement R34 GTT nismo gauge cluster should be the same as stock in terms of the gauge placement. That it's not is probably why it doesn't work:

What's worth noting is that GTR clusters have the speedo/tacho on the opposite side than the GTT:

That suggests to me that this could be a GTR cluster? I'm fairly sure there's a write-up somewhere on these forums about converting/adapting the wiring from a GTR cluster to the GTT cluster - so if that's the case, that could help.

Edit: The other thing that occurs to me, is that your factory cluster is on the wrong side - perhaps series 2 are the other way around like GTR?

Edit #2: Found a picture of the nismo GTR cluster - it is the other way around as I suspected - but it also clearly says GTR on it - so you would know it was GTR if it were not for GTT .. hmmm ..

I'm fairly sure that series 1 and 2 R34 GTT have the speedo and rev on the same side. The only difference between the 2 is, the series 2 has a silvery on the cluster.

But Jenna, have you actually seen a thread on the cluster conversion? Coz I don't seem to find it. Coz I have a R34 GTR Vspec cluster at home, I wouldn't mind trying to put that into my GTT :P

Hrmmm .. I'm sure I ran across a thread 3+ years ago that listed how to do it. I seem to recall it was pretty extensive repinning

between the various sides of the cluster to allow for the speedo/tacho/oil-pressure gauge moving between sides.

I'm sure with the assistance of the right tools & the workshop manual it wouldn't be too hard to figure out - but I was sure there was a tutorial or the like already floating around ..

Edit: I've done some pretty extensive googling around and for the life of my I can't find it though :(

My stock cluster is the other way around from the one you posted.

r34gauge.jpg

my speedo is on the right and revs on the left.

BUT, the nismo gauge is the reverse to this. So this could be the problem? Do they make a nismo one on the opposite sides or do i have to go a GTR one?

Errrr... wtf? lol

Can you post up a pic of your cluster?..

EDIT: Coz this is a series 2 cluster:

I posted a picture of a nismo one earlier, so they must - yes. Infact, I was fairly sure the GTR nismo one was cheaper.

Either way, given yours has obviously been repinned for a GTR cluster, surely must be possible to put it back!

What I don't get is... The middle plug is different between the GTT and GTR cluster. If you can plug your middle plug straight into your GTT cluster, that means your plug is still GTT, but how would the GTT plug fit the GTR cluster??

Unless the GTR cluster's plug has been converted to GTT plug..

    • I'm normally copping my own abuse from neglecting my daily drivers. "Those suspension bushes will last a bit more", "Don't worry about the oil leak, just keep topping it up". The project cars I'm always doing things slowly on them as I'm wanting them to be done better, and neater, and nicer. Luckily I don't have to deal with 18 year old Matt's "Learning to wire" stuff in the project cars. And there's only one piece of wiring I'm displeased about in the Landcruiser, and it's about to be cut out... However, the box loads of parts that have been going through this place lately for the Landcruiser... Brake pads Brake Rotors Full handbrake overhaul Wheel Bearings Seals Swivel hubs Steering Boxes Half the suspension joints Shocks Air bags (Ones to go in the rear springs for towing) Water pump Timing kit Lower timing case Harmonic Balancer Radiator Lots of other little seals and shits Gas struts for the bonnet New power window switches And god knows what else I've forgotten... Ha ha ha I have my fingers crossed the pinion seals don't start leaking on the diffs, that the transfer case doesn't leak, and the gearbox input shaft doesn't leak, nor the rear main seal. As they're about the only seals I haven't replaced in the driveline! I'm seriously eyeing off buying new caliper rebuild kits front and rear brake calipers... I'll probably recheck all the valve clearances soon too, and hopefully, it should be all good and sweet to haul some long distance trips again!
    • Every time I pull my 3x gauges out of the console and see the crack-addict way that I did the wiring, and I just can't bring myself to tear it all apart and "make it nice", because it is currently working. In fact, the last time I was in there I probably made it worse.
    • The best part is when you own the car long enough that you look back and find your OWN ham fisted amateur shit!
    • The annoying part about neglect, is when you start to replace one thing, and find ten more broken things. Ham fisted monkey repairs you normally only find out about when trying to do something unrelated! Ha ha   Neglect you can kind of anticipate the huge costs to fix it all. Ham fistedness is normally a shock the first time your work on a new old car, as everything "looked" good before.
