I know there's a similar thread about putting them into an R32 GTST already, but does anyone know if you can wire up the factory R33 Din gauges (torque split, oil temp & boost) into a Stagea? I've seen some series 2 ones that have these gauges in them, so guessing was a factory option? Keen to set this or the R32 ones (volts, oil temp & boost) up, gives a bit more info and retains a neat factory style.

i have looked into it heaps of times if you get the factory gauges you need the factory sensors as well just jap do the gauges but not the sensors they are hard to get on their own unless u find somewon willing to pull the sensors out for u. It cost me less then $150 to make my own and the aftermarket boost gauge does vacume and boost not just boost like the factory one. having vacume makes things so much easier for finding problems. There is no aftermarket torque gauge that is the only downside.

i bought the 3 din defi unit. fits mint and isnt that pricey considering the gauges are actually all useful. oil temp, water temp and oil pressure, and accurate too. Mine looks OEM which keeps the authorities happy :) fills up that spare din space and easy to see them as they are slightly angled too.

Think I'll be giving this a go, single din 3 gauge holder

might have to do a little welding to it, as I dont really need a torque gauge I'm gonna go with water, oil and boost

I don't think it's possible to fit up the R33 DIN gauges to a Stagea unless you're willing to put in a HELL of a lot of work. It was attempted by a few people quite a while back, and I think they found that there was nowhere to plug the gauges into... A search might yield some feedback.

And if Brad (unique1) says it's not possible, then it's pretty much the best information you'll get - he's been in the Stagea game for a long time and has seen his car go through more transformations than probably everyone else combined!

His suggestion of using the Defi unit is a good one, and keeping an eye on your oil and water pressures and temps is much more important than the torque being transferred to the front wheels. Personally, I've got a boost gauge on the dash where the clock used to be, and in a DIN slot I've got Exhaust Temp, Oil Temp and Oil Pressure.

a company called mearcat makes gauge pods for the stageas where the clock is. I got a email from the company i was talking about the other day they said 65 each for din gauge pannel i just emailed them and said how many do we need to buy to get a better price and how much.

Finally finished doing my aftermarket gauge install.

As I previously posted I went for the 52mm 3 gauge holder of flebay for $20.post-78650-0-63845600-1309987642_thumb.jpg

As these are metal it was a easy fix to bend it back (which worried me)

Now my dash had the double din stereo so the climate control will only go in the top slot and hacking up the metal brace that everything goes into wasn't an option for me, so I decided that the middle slot it was and I would have to modify the gauge holder instead.

So first I broke of the locating tabs and cut away the bits that would get in the way:

Now I wish I had pics for this part but because the gauge holder was angled and the gauges are about 50+mm deep there was no way it would fit :angry: , so I had to get the plastic hot knife to the back left of the water gauge so it could clear the brace, also had to cut one end off the u bracket that holds the gauge in

Next 2 tack welds with a mig welder to hold it in place (tig would have worked better)

Then all the wiring involved and put back together:

There are small gaps between the facia and the gauge holder at the sides but they are small and actually help fit the gauges in there because the gauge face was actually 57mm (something to take into consideration if trying to mount 3 gauges flat in the single din spot- 3 x 57mm WONT FIT)

All up it cost $180 and a few hours scratching my head, but it was worth it

how come your boost gauge is showing a reading though? i assume you're at idle given i can see the reflection of you holding your camera with two hands!

Yeah was wondering why that is also, especially as the pressure sensor isnt hooked up to the boost lines yet. It usually shows 1psi but occasionaly jumps to 2 and stays there. I'm hoping that when its plumbed up it will sort itself out after a bit of use.

    • Never an issue with boost control. No weird boost issues pre throttle at partial throttle like you're suggesting. It worked.   As for all the turbo damage claims, they all were started by aftermarket BOV companies. At least turbo timer companies had SOME truth about them, except people failed to realise that except for in extreme circumstances, that small amount of driving you do to park/ through pit lane etc, is enough to not have a need for a turbo timer.
    • I tell people all the time this stuff runs on a 2 MHz 8-bit MCU. The math is a bit arcane, they do a lot to get around their limited resolution and so on but it works great as-shipped. So if an 80 to 160 MHz modern 32-bit MCU can't make it work you've really screwed something up badly. Your average graphing calculator is faster these days, god forbid we start talking about what's hiding in vapes or some stupid internet-connected "smart appliance".  I suspect the lore about off-throttle surge damaging turbos must be very, very old if it was ever true. I still don't think off throttle surge is good for turbos because you're rapidly having air going in and out of the turbo on top of rapid loss in shaft speed which presumably does impart some kind of unusual load on the rotating assembly. As for the recirculating valve, I believe Nissan actually in a press slide deck of some kind explained for the RZ34 they found it improved response. Prior to that they kept the throttle cracked open instead which causes rev hang and because the throttle/engine is a substantial restriction a ton of the energy in the air stream is lost just to pumping past it. Recirculating helps reduce energy loss by bringing the intake side of the compressor up in pressure so it's not working as hard to pull air in. In DCT cars where they can slam gears I believe Porsche hangs the throttle wide open with no fuel injection to keep turbo RPMs as high as possible during the shift. As for running post-throttle boost source, I would be concerned that at partial throttle on boost you would have driveability issues. It would be constantly trying to run crazy amounts of boost before the throttle to compensate for the throttling effect. Maybe with a much more sophisticated boost control setup you could activate a solenoid that goes from a conventional 3-port setup to something that allows the wastegates to see full vacuum in that specific case? 
    • Did you clean everything out? Take all intercooler piping off, empty the intercooler of oil, clean the exhaust out, etc? Intercoolers make great catch cans... Which makes them less useful for intercooling... But very worth cleaning out, along with all adjoining piping.
    • Update Got turbo back from hypergear, installed everything etc. Bled coolant, wasn't smoking so I thought beauty she's sorted now. Went on a drive, car up to temp, let it idle for about 15 seconds, gave it some gas...nice puff of smoke again. Fml No doubt my turbo was pretty worn anyway but nonetheless frustrating that the problem persists.
