I got chatting to someone the other day about politics and how car enthusiasts' interests, in our opinion at least, are woefully under-represented in Parliament.

The Libs are certainly open to the idea of things like the Motorplex, which is a big plus over Labor in my opinion, but then again, it wouldn't be the first time politicians went back on their word if they changed their mind about it after the election...

Nick Xenophon, as an example, ran as an independent in the Upper House (Legislative Council) on his No Pokies platform, and because he held the balance of power there, was able to achieve a huge amount for his own cause because he had the Labor party of the day by the balls - "if you want me to vote this through, you need to do this" kind-of thing.

So this got me thinking - why can't we do the same?

At the 2011 election, a few independent politicians attempted half-heartedly to jump on the motoring enthusiasts' bandwagon late in the piece, but they were generally trying to win seats in the Lower House, and because of the way electorates are split, had no luck whatsoever.

If it's going to be successful, we have to put all our resources into making sure one or possibly two people get into the Upper House, which is based on votes received right across South Australia. From that perspective, we need to be co-ordinated, and start planning as of now.

So this thread is designed to get some discussion going, and see what you guys think - do you think the collective motoring enthusiasts of South Australia could get one or two independent candidates over the line? Is this idea completely insane?

Bring in 'mod plate laws' similar to Qld, have a motorsport complex signed off by the Govt, roads made 'safer' (quality) by ensuring funds raised by drivers ie fines go back into the roads fund rather tha line the Govt's coffers......

I was involved in the 2010 election supporting Councillor Joe Ienco who is a very well respected member of the community who was endorsed by the Adelaide Motorplex group.

Almost literally with another handful of votes we would have had our representative. Should he run again, we can most certainly get him in an have an avenue to achieve our wants/needs with the support of all enthusiasts.

The idea of getting behind an established polly that isn't soley driven by personal agendas is not an insane idea at all.........problem is, trying to find one that has been passionate about the Motorplex from day 1 and still is.

Anyone have a name they can throw into the hat that can be approached by us.

I'd be happy to get behind someone like that collectively.

This is Joe Lenco's current policy but no mention of a Motorplex.

MY POLICIES:

JOE IENCO___________Lets put our community first!I look forward to representing the residents of Findon Ward as your Councillor. My wife and I run a business based in Flinders Park, and with our two older children, live in Findon Ward.I have lived and worked in our local area most of my life, and been involved in many local sporting, community and charitable groups. My commitment to you is to listen, work hard, keep rates as low as possible, scrutinize expenditure, look after our environment and ensure older and more vulnerable residents are looked after. My aim is to be a part of Council that is united, working together with a positive vision for the future to improve Kidman park, Findon, Seaton and Fulham Gardens.I am not a member of any political party so I put residents' wishes first.

Having said that, here is a past thread endorsing his interest in a Motorplex.

My question is, is he still passionate about it or was it a ploy for a seat?

Was thinking about this the other day. Seems theres a dearth of policy - maybe we should write our own policy and lobby hard till it gets adopted?

Problems?

- roads in state of disrepair (BIGTIME! Ever been interstate?)

- roads designed 30 years ago inadequate for modern levels of traffic

- side barriers, speed traps help slow people down but speed cameras and 50kph zones do nothing except raise revenue

- drivers are not periodically tested for their licences and the current rules are extremely insufficient

- shitbox cars (ie the ones that actually deserve a defect) are not sufficiently policed

- imported cars under grey legislation are under scrutiny that is sometimes ambiguous due to the lack of company ADR compliance

- defect scheme is a cash cow and doesnt solve the problem of modifications

- political posturing does not save lives and both parties need to admit this - support must be more than partisan if it is suspected to pass

- no venues within 100km of the cbd for motorsports - motorsport complex will attract regular high profile events as well as a driver training venue

- more safety measures from a motorcyclists pov should also be taken into account

Possible Solutions?

- use revenue from speeding, drink driving, lack of rego/etc exclusively for upkeep of the roads and driver training.

- feasibility studies to upgrade adelaide to a specification that will account for another 30 years of growth - this may involve more o-bahn/trains or tunnels/overpasses

- enthusiast car clubs could possibly volunteer to map the roads on cruises and could point out inadequecies on specific roads and locations

- mandatory 10 year licence test up till the age of 60, then every 5 years. Abolish the logbook method of obtaining P plates. Introduce defensive driving courses as standard with the L plate scheme, with advanced driving courses encouraged.

- implement a modification plate scheme like in the eastern states

- make regency inspections a taxpayer paid expense (ie rego and third party)

- implement an independant lobby body for the sake of motorists. RAA is corrupt.

Would be nice if we could convince the govt that part proceeds from a motorsport complex would easily pay for the driver training venue

Suggestions?

$0.02

Too many cork heads lately if you know what i mean..... ((5 x 28 day impounds) + 1 to be caught).....

He sure is passionate about it pete, I know this for sure, he currently is a City of Charles Sturt Councillor

I would know as I am his son. :D

He knows many influential political identities an deals with them on a constant basis for the best interests of the community, an can relate to the everyday citizen.

He is active in the movement for the establishment of the motorplex with the consortium.

Ill post up more information soon.

Sounds like a good cause to get involved in way before the election smut starts...

We need to see some policy tho. Simply saying 'I'm pro car' isn't good enough. We need actual plans to get stuff rolling and this will involve many people, from the motorplex consortium, to manufacturers, to mechanics and other people whos livelihood/income will be affected, as well as getting the policy RFC'ed past sapol to see what the popo have to say. (because politicians will ignore police advice whenever it's politically convenient).

My main gripe is the lack of decent surfaces and lack of barriers - and I figure if you're going to go to that detail, make it biker friendly so the stuff that happens to some of the bikers out there doesnt end up being a fatality.

I'd also love to propose modifying that 50kph limit when unsigned and returning it to 60kph. NFI if that would pass though.

yeah and to get the older persons vote you need to have the motor complex way down the list but its high on the priority

make roads safer more disabled parking around facilities

where possible dual carriage ways (unlike this crap Churchill rd upgrades they re tar a very busy rd but make huge choke points all the way along it

lower north east rd needs to have the dual carriage way extended all the way to handcock rd

little things like this to help traffic flow

couldn't agree more on 60kph

    • I checked the injectors again (1 and 2, since they’re easiest to access) to make sure they weren’t clogged. Even though the entire fuel system had been cleaned, I wanted to be certain. Everything looked clean, so I reinstalled and connected everything. When I started the car to confirm everything was okay, it immediately revved up high, so I shut it off straight away. I checked to see if I’d missed a vacuum hose or something, but everything was connected. On the second attempt, the car ran without the high idle, but I noticed a distinct “compressed air” sound coming from the engine bay. Tracing the sound, I pushed injector #6 forward slightly and the noise stopped — it turned out it wasn’t seated properly, despite the fuel rail being bolted down. While holding it in place, the car idled steadily without stalling and ran for over 5 minutes. At this point, I pulled all six injectors out just in case I hadn’t seated them correctly or dirt had gotten onto the O-rings. Unfortunately, I discovered that I had damaged 3 out of 6 injectors (the OEM 270cc ones) during installation. So yes, this was my fault. Since only the pintle caps were damaged, I’ve ordered a Fuel Injector Service Kit from NZEFI to refurbish them. In the meantime, I reinstalled my new injectors – the car now idles fine for over 15 minutes without stalling. I have not attempted to drive it so far. It’s not perfect yet, as it hesitates when the throttle is pressed, but it’s a big improvement. Unplugging the IACV with the new injectors idles at around 800rpm, even with the IACV screw tightened fully. But this is probably due to tune.
    • I wanted to try and preserve the front bumper as long as possible, they're not cheap and are made to order in Japan. Taking inspiration from my previous K11 Micra build where I made an undertray for the Impul bumper, I did the same for this BN Sports bumper but a little slimmed down.  This time round I only made a 'skid plate' (if that's the correct wording/term) for just the bumper surface area, the Micra version covered the gap like an undertray. Starting off with a sheet of mild steel approx. 0.9mm thick 4ft x 2ft in size. I traced around the bumper, cut it out and cleaned the edges. Luckily I was able to get two halves from one piece of metal In the video I installed it as is, but I've since then I've removed it to spray and add a rubber edging trim. The rubber trim is suitable for 1-2mm and it's a really nice tight fit. The bolts had to be loosened due to the plates being too tight against the bumper, the trim wouldn't push on I used some stainless M6 flat headed bolts for a flusher finish (rather than hex heads poking down), I believe this style fastener is used for furniture too incase you struggle to source some. The corner's are a little wider, but this may be an advantage incase I get close to bumping it  The front grill got some attention, finally getting round to repairing it. Upon removal one fixing pulled itself out of the plastic frame, one side is M8 that fixes inside of the frame, where as the other side is M5. Not knowing I could get replacements, I cut down an M8 bolt, threaded it inside the frame along with a decent amount of JB Weld.  The mesh was replaced to match the bumper. One hole on the bonnet/hood had to be drilled out to 8mm to accommodate the new stud, once the glue had set it could be refitted. I think the reason the grill was double meshed was to hide the horn/bonnet latch (which makes sense) but I much prefer it matching the bumper Bumper refitted and it's looking much better IMO The Youtube video can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVZP35io9MA
