Hey guys

I was driving round city the other night and got pulled up over having my spotties on , i thought that was a bit odd, he told me to turn them off and that some law has been in place for the last 18months about having them on?? said i could get fined $800, or maybe i didnt hear him right...

does that sound right?? what harm does having your spotties on do? factory fitted i might add, is the police guy just a wanker or is he talking the truth???

Yeah just about every state has a law stating you aren't permitted to use driving/fog-lights unless in foggy/adverse conditions.

Never really understood why... probably due to the fact they might be a bit glarey. :/ And yes they do fine you for it.

That said, look at my avatar. Those lights inside my headlights are considered my driving lights/fog lights but I seem to get away with it because cops assume they are the normal headlight (but the headlight is to the left of that).

hmm, dam laws!!

you'd think it would add to safety more than be a hazard, oh well :glare:

but the spotties are the factory ones, there not foggies, dont appear to be that bright, look similar to the headlights..

was night time too, dont seem to be much different from a commodore or camry's bottem spotties..

firstly they are 'apotties' as spotties are activated with high beam and designed for much better visibility. what you have are fog lights. yes they are illegal, regardless of how bright they are. the ones you see on falcons, etc are also illegal as the same rules apply, so don't use the "they have them on so i should be able to as well."

the general rule is that if they have a seperate switch to turn them on then they are illegal. if they come on when you turn the lights on then they are driving lights so they are legal. this doesn't mean that you can rewire them to try and beat the rule as it is based on how they are wired from standard.

hmm  , so that means all those late model cars could get fined and told off as well, kind of doesnt make sense that manufacturers are putting "apotties" on there cars and they are illegal

maybe i should wire them up to the full beam then and use them sparingly like that ??? that would be legal then right??

They aren't illegal to use if you're using them properly. If there's fog, you can turn your foglights on. If there isn't any fog, you can't turn your foglights on. How hard is that to understand?

And yes, the tards in their VT onwards SS Commodores with the little round lights in the front bar can be pulled over and fined for it as well. My Caprice has foglights, and I've only used them once in the year that I've owned my car. Not only is it illegal to use them unless necessary, it's potentially blinding to other people on the road. You might be able to see the 3M of road in front of you much better, but they (potentially) can't see a thing except your foglights. Admittedly standard foglights are usually pretty crap, but it's still illegal.

I understand crystal clear now Kermit, thanks for the explanation... I didnt realize they'd be blinding anyone but i take your word for it, they dont look like there for fog, i thought fog lights were a yellow colour but fair enough

thanks for the imputs guys, has cleared this issue up for me

cheers

    • Nope.    Grab a varex and turn it down as you get close to home, win win?
    • So, I've had my V36 for about a month now and have already copped an "excessive exhaust noise" notification from QLD TMR, reported by someone in my local area. It's a twin as per the original, and can have a bit of a throaty note to it when idling cold 😄 and if I do get up it a bit, it can be noisy, but it did pass a roadworthy inspection before sale, so.... ... but in the interest of being a good neighbour, I do want to quieten it down a bit. Is anyone here running a quiet aftermarket cat-back on their V36 or 370Z? And the big, bold question: does an aftermarket cat-back really make much of a performance difference on these cars?
    • The wiring diagram for the R33 RB25 is freely available, and is essentially the same same as most other RBs (just with differences as to which pin # does which job). To get the ECU to power up, you just need to provide power to the ECCS relay, and have the other power feeds that come in from the top left of the wiring diagram (wrt the ECU) that give perma power to the fuel pump relay, the ECU itself, etc etc, all connected. When you put power on all these it will just come to life. It's pretty clear from the diagram what needs to happen. Just follow the lines from the 12V + supply stuff in the top left over towards the ECU. I've even posted snips of such diagrams (not for vanilla 25, I think for Neo and 26) to various threads here in the last few months, talking about what it takes to get the fuel pump and FPCM up and going. Search these up and they will help get you started on doing the same with the vanilla 25 diagram. Hell, for all I know, I've done the same with that one in years past and have forgotten.
    • Yep...so unless someone posts up the answer you will need to probe from the ECU connector to the dash plug with a multi meter in continuity mode to trace the wires.  Note the ECU has multiple - and + (and across different key settings - Battery, IGN and Start) and most likely the power is fed from the connector(s) that is normally near the left hand headlight.
    • Thanks Duncan, I am actually just trying to get the Rb turning and running with the RB25DET S2 original loom itself  I am just trying to get it going outside the body and not thinking about the S15 or trying to match anything to the S15 loom at all I am only trying to see if anyone has done this and what pin they found to be the ignition trigger and ECU+/- on the dash connector, that's about it. Thanks
