hi guys,

im only new to the forums. ive just purchesed a R32 gtr 1990 model. after owning a supra.

now after 3 days off ownership i've ran in to issues with the car. i was driving it stopped at some traffic lights and turned. when turned i decided to give it a lttle boot full and it just cut out and shut down. now i restarted the car and after that the car wont rev past 4500rpm.it splutters and feels like its surging. i orginally thought it was the fuel pump (checked pressures and flow rate, a little slack) and so happen i had a denso 10-20 universal fuel pump so i placed this in it did not fix the issue ( though finding the original fuel pump was a little tired was a good time to upgrade) now i then i was thinking the air flow meters so i've pulled them off and given them a good clean out ( i have spare airflow meters so i fitted those also didnt fix the issue). now this did not fix the issue either! i also check vaccum hoses and other relating hoses ,found no leaks. just wondering if you guys no any issues with the gtr relating to these faults!?

does the tps (sensor) have a spring load in it? or is it one off those ones that dont? thats what im thinking the issue is at the moment just sourcing a new tps now?

your info and input would be great :)

thanks Josh

it just seems like its forgotten what boost is! its just cutting out at 4000rpm. more underload though through higher gears the issue happens lower in the revs!

its runnning a kaikimoto ecu i was told. just havent pulled the trim off too check!

does the car idle OK, or is there lots of black smoke.

9 times out of 10 this sort of problem is caused by a major boost leak. Unfortunately the other time out of 10 it is caused by loosing the compressor wheel off your turbo :(

Do you know what the maximum boost it hit was?

+1, so check if any of the intercooler pipes have popped off (boost leak), or disconnect the front pipe from the cat and look for this;

That's the remains of a ceramic turbine...

Well no intercooler pipes are off! And the car has r34 GTR n1 turbos on it! But I'll pull the exhaust off and check the turbo's :) and let you's know.

Also the idle is a little ruff and dies blow a little bit off black smoke on start up but it ran perfect all the way home from Sydney and didn't miss a beat :(

Boost not sure but I was told it's running stock boost! And the car was apparently tuned with that ecu! The car still boosts cause you can here it and it start to pull the littlest amount the surges an splutters! :(

Doesn't sound quite right.. But seeing as no-one has gone with the good old coils options, I will. Open the bonnet and take the coil cover off, see if there are sparks coming off the coils onto the cam covers. Maybe swap AFMs, cleaning them is not a great idea.

I wasn't saying it will be the same problem, just what mine was doing and what it turned out to be - injectors maxing out and ecu playing games. Boost, cut, boost, cut all the way once 3.5k+. It would still rev but stop go stop go..

Meh that's alright I'm happy to play around with it :) just want to be boosting again!! :P no coils are only new :) spitfire ones so not that and no sparking And plugs good :) and afm's changed over not them either! I'm thinking the tps sensor since it's a weird one it has points in it and when you play with the turn wheel inside it's just all free play! You can't here them clinking over or anything! And just out off sheer luck it's still drivable! And I'm leaning more to that cause it running rich down low and lean up high!! It's just not getting fuel!

Theres 2 turbo's so if one is popped then the other can still be boosting slightly.

Nope - it cant happen. The broken turbo is basically a hole to atmosphere, so its like having a cooler pipe off.

Can vouch for that.... Seemed to run ok, no missing etc, just only had about 100hp. Electrical is where my money is...

i'm thinking electrical as well now! pretty much ruled out everything else! just have too look into it a bit more! so ill get the osilloscope out at work on monday and check the ignition module, tps and several other things!! hopefully i find the problem!!!!

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
