Hi

I'm thinking of getting one of these Self Assembly Internal Combustion Engine Kits. They look fun and very educated. Have anyone has one of these? What is it like?

Haynes Combustion Engine

or

Airfix Engineer Series Internal Combustion Engines

The reason why i wanted one is so that i can have a much better understanding of how a real engine works as i want to work/build a small engine as a project sometime in the future. I've upgraded Turbo on a Toyota Starlet a while back and for somebody that has no mechanical knowledge, it took me a while to put them together but end result was very much fun, the feeling of getting your hand dirty, working on your own car instead of paying a workshop and a finished product that worked better than your imagination was very very sanctifying.

Some photos of a Standard SR20 turbo on an EP82 Starlet...

* Standard SR20 vs CT9

* SR20 on ebay manifold

* On car

* My dog helped inspect the tiny CT9 :)

* $50 evo 6 cooler

* Finished product, stealth and fun.

With just 6 psi, i was able to keep up with Evo7 lol.

I got the Haynes one for my mate for his birthday a few years ago. It's pretty cool. Would definetely give you a good understanding if you knew nothing about engines.

I don't think it would really help you in any way on how to build an engine though.

Definately not, I'm thinking of bolting a 1.5lt bottom end of a paseo to the 1.3lt starlet so it shouldn't be too hard.

Got a 1.6 nissan, mostly in pieces, but would be willing to put together and sell to you if you like, run fine not problems and i think it would help you understand things a little better, however, in saying so, those little DIY engines are good as they are clear (i think if they are the ones i'm thinking about) and let you see everything, also, if you like i could seel you the gear box as well.

Just if your interested tho.

Get a shitty old busted engine...disassemble...learn...assemble...do it for real with a workship manual. It's just like Lego!

Those things are so cool!

I actually tried that myself twice now: first was a vl commo and a 79 bmw 323i; pulled the engine apart and tried tried to learn about whats inside. Its very interesting but makes a mess lolz

do they make miniture internal combustion engines you can build and put on display (ones that actually run?) I ask because im building a house at the moment and thinking of putting an engine on a stand for display, maybe an rb series motor like they have at sema and auto shows.

take my GA mate, be a nice size for a small coffee table, cheap as for you $75 thumbsup.gif

Huh??? GA?

Anyways, i just saw those haynes engine assembly @ autobarn for $59 i think; they had heaps of them and i was tempted lolz

the GA16DE engine, is the 1.6 L engine nissan put into their FWD pulsar, i believe they started on the N14 pulsar but stopped at the N15, from there they moved onto the QG16DE and QG18DE emgine for the N16 (this is what i am led to believe), as such, i have a N15 pulsar that i was doing up and have pulled out the GA16DE engine and block to which i feel would only be good for a table with a glass top, as it needs a complete rebuild with fresh internals, however, if someone wants to pull it apart and see how it works, it would be fine for that

Interesing, now im considering this as i wouldnt mind a engine block table for my lounge. where are you? melb, cos interstate would be very hard.

How much does an engine like this weigh too?

i'm in brisbane and it weights about 40 - 60 kgs, picked it up out of the engine bay after removing the gearbox from it, still not light though

Wow, even small engines are quite heavy. Too much hassle to ship something that heavy though. Thanks anyways man cos 75bux is pretty cheap to learn and build a coffee table or engine model.

Im still keen on this idea so ill keep an eye out in the fs section for blown rb20 25, 30 and 26 with a good price.

ill post a thread if i do end up with a engine block coffee table lolz

nice, yeah the engine is cheap because a. it will need a full rebuild, b. i think you can get a full engine and gearbox for like $450 that doesn't need anything done on it, as such, i have taken this into account and will charge accordingly

    • Haha, i kow right? Could have bought so many cars for the same amount of money (or less) but driving Unicorn gives you at least +1mln to style 😅. Like wise man said "life's to short to drink cheap wine and drive boring cars" 😉
    • Newbie here, proud owner of an Autech 260RS. I'm on the hunt for wiring diagrams specific to the 260RS, particularly S1. I've ran my eyes through R33, R34 Diagrams, there are some similarities, however continue to find incorrect wire colours and pins on connectors in the 33,34 diagrams.   I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction? I'd be happy to pay for the originals in Japanese. I can translate them, at least they would be accurate.   Any help please would be greatly appreciated, never heard an RB26DETT before let alone driven one, and I've got a spaghetti monster of goodness to sort out.   Cheers Benny
    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again
    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
