Hi all.

I'm after a new set of rotors for my M35 Stagea. Already got a set of QFM HPX pads to go in, and will more than likely replace the standard lines with braided ones.

I was all ready to order a set of slotted DBA 4000 rotors, however when doing a bit of research found that a lot of people on here had issues with them cracking some time ago after track days. I was looking at doing an occasional track day or hillclimb once the brakes and suspension were done, so I'd like to upgrade with this in mind. It'll be about 95% street, 5% track.

Not sure if these rotors are still having cracking issues, or if being a 1.8 tonne wagon I'll just emphasize the issues.

What would you recommend as a suitable upgrade? Or can I safely order the DBA 4000 series without killing them?

Hey Mate,

Honestly I think you'll be pissing in the wind with the Std Braking system. I know you can get uprated pads and rotors for them, but in reality, I think your better off using something a bit better out of the nissan stable.

The single piston, thin rotors they come with really are not up to the job of stopping these beasts!

See if you can get a front set of either GTR brembo's, or if thats too pricy, go to the R32 GTR/ R33 GTS-t 4pot Sumitomos.

These provide better Pad/rotor Choice as well.

Just my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I think I'm going to go with an upgrade to the stock system for now. At first I was just looking for a simple upgrade to the stock setup, and didn't want to bugger around with getting different setups engineered.

Now that we're looking at doing more track days, hillclimbs, etc, the stock system may not be good enough, but it will be interesting viewing for people now that we're shooting it all for the web site.

I can already see you being right mystery_kid, but we'll bake the HPXs now that I've got them before switching to the A1RMs.

So the upgrade for now is a set of DBA 4000 series rotors in the new Clubspec T3 design, which we will be evaluating for DBA, the QFM HPX pads and a set of Stoptech braided lines.

Still trying to get my head around brake fluids, but I think it'll either be the Valvoline Performance DOT4 or the Motul RBF600.

Depending on how this setup goes we may move to 350Z/GTR Brembos Alex, but it'll be a worthwhile exercise either way I think, now that we're doing some evaluation work and some write ups/videos on what we learn.

You would be surprised at how well the stock brakes can work with a few upgrades. I've got the slotted DBA4000 series rotors in my C34 S1 with Maltech lines, Motul RBF600 and Dixcel (jap brand) pads. The pad choice came down to availability at the time a couple of years ago as there wern't many choices for S1's back then here in Aus and I kind of bought them blind (seeing as I don't read Japanese) so I can't tell you the specs of the pad but I was surprised at how well the combo preformed on what you could say is a piss weak system compared to the rest of the Nissan lineup. Cold performance is not as good as I'd like but once you get some heat in the brakes they can take a fair amount of punishment. I have been able to get them to fade during some spirited mountain driving but for what the system is it does well. And as for cracking I haven't had any issues in the couple of years I've had them.

    • Yeah, it's getting like that, my daughter is coming over on Thursday to help me remove the bonnet so I can install the Carbuilders underbonnet stuff,  I might get her to give me a hand and remove the hardtop, maybe, because on really hot days the detachable hardtop helps the aircon keep the interior cool, the heat just punches straight through to rag top I also don't have enough hair for the "wind in the hair" experience, so there is that....LOL
    • Could be falling edge/rising edge is set wrong. Are you getting sync errors?
    • On BMWs what I do because I'm more confident that I can't instantly crush the pinch welds and do thousands of USD in chassis damage is use a set of rubber jacking pads designed to protect the chassis/plastic adapter and raise a corner of the car, place the aforementioned 2x12 inch wooden planks under a tire, drop the car, then this normally gives me enough clearance to get to the front central jack point. If you don't need it to be a ramp it only needs to be 1-1.5 feet long. On my R33 I do not trust the pinch welds to tolerate any of this so I drive up on the ramps. Before then when I had to get a new floor jack that no longer cleared the front lip I removed it to get enough clearance to put the jack under it. Once you're on the ramps once you simply never let the car down to the ground. It lives on the ramps or on jack stands.
    • Nah. You need 2x taps for anything that you cannot pass the tap all the way through. And even then, there's a point in response to the above which I will come back to. The 2x taps are 1x tapered for starting, and 1x plug tap for working to the bottom of blind holes. That block's port is effectively a blind hole from the perspective of the tap. The tapered tap/tapered thread response. You don't ever leave a female hole tapered. They are supposed to be parallel, hence the wide section of a tapered tap being parallel, the existince of plug taps, etc. The male is tapered so that it will eventually get too fat for the female thread, and yes, there is some risk if the tapped length of the female hole doesn't offer enough threads, that it will not lock up very nicely. But you can always buzz off the extra length on the male thread, and the tape is very good at adding bulk to the joint.
    • Nice....looking forward to that update
