nice suggestions guys! thanks :)

I had no idea I could afford cars like the ae101 levin or the aw11 mr2! those are great cars.

in regards to turbo/supercharged, yeah WA has no turbo laws on P platers, so I don't mind getting one, i'm just a little concerned about insurance premiums, but I could always just go for 3rd party I guess.

Haven't been able to find any half decent 33 for 5k though, only auto non turbo ones in that price range in WA at least (our cars seem to be alot more expensive)

for the datsuns/ke corollas - is there anyway to make them half decent without spending a fortune? i was looking at another thread in here of someone who got a 120y and he was looking at spending 5-6k before even putting a new engine in!

their probably my favourite car out of all them in regards to looks, but Im just not too sure if I could afford to spend the amount of money it seems to need.

but basically out of my previous list the best cars would be the civic or the prelude?

the civic seems like a really good option, theres tons of things to do to make it fast, the car is cheap and economical .. my only problem with it is that its just not as "special" as the other cars mentioned

what are everyones thoughts on the Supra?

and with silvias the only ones I could find in perth that are relatively affordable are the S13s?

I was looking around for an S12 they look great, but couldnt find one around

yeah things are more expensive over here so beware.

5k might get you into something turboed but the insurance will kill you. Even 3rd party is pretty mad...

Id say go for the SSS pulsar or an N/A Silvia/180sx.

the reality is 5k is not going to get you a decent car that isnt going to give you trouble, cost you less than your first born to insure, or be cheap to run. Accept that...

the prior generation of supras are pretty clapped out now, cost a fortune to keep on the road and arent really that good in the performance stakes...

yeah vtec civic's n preludes are also worth a look in...

good luck mate

^ yeah turbo insurance is horrible thats why I ended up with the n/a 34

i like that n/a silvia james put up thumbsup.gif

civic/teg is prob the practical option though

ah damn thats a shame about the supra :( they look real good imo

cheers for the input mate :)

neither down.gif

i was thinking of taking half a year off uni to go do the pre apprenticeship though ...

that short tafe course i did was useless. the instructor wouldnt teach anything that was harder to do than a filter change ... mad.gif

SAU wanna come teach me and james :P?

free beers all around if you guys help me work on my next car! biggrin.gif

oh for any future readers of this thread who are looking for similar things ..

http://www.overclock...late_legal_cars

this was posted somewhere else on these forums, but i find it pretty useful :)

i was looking for a micra super S as that site suggested

*edit* their pricings a bit inaccurate though some cars have appreciated in value while others have depreciated .. or so ive found anyway

Please dont buy nx or any fwd hair dresser spec car

If you must get a fwd atleast get something uber light like a GTI swift or civic.

Of all cheap cars a 31 is prob the easiest to turbo and it should be reliable enough, alot of fun can be had in a 31

I actually dont think their that bad looking a car LOL

i was looking at that awhile back

hows one of these or SSS pulsar compare with a civic in terms of parts/aftermarket support?

Civics dont seem that light - the sedans weigh in at 2300-2500 lbs apparently

the hatches are a little bit lighter (sorry the weight is in lbs - wikipedia lol)

I dont think the 4WD TX3 fits in my budget, i was hunting for one - i actually quite liked that car

and yeah the r31 is another option ... huge car though! ive seen some really nice looking ones on these forums but

James you inspired me to look on carsales!

I think integras actually a pretty good choice, was looking at the ozhonda forums .. seems like power can be had for quite a decent amount of work. sure as hell more responsive to mods than an n/a skyline! and much lighter too

not in perth but ..

*edit* - from Ozhonda (DC5R though but id imagine DC2 would be similar?)

Low budget – Sleeper (Quiet & quick)

#1 – Lightweight flywheel

#2 – Heavy-duty clutch

#3 – Lower final drive

#4 – Modified stock airbox (Aka Hondata)

#5 – Header + cat + JDM DC5R or Mugen cat back

#6 – Hondata K100

Power output: 120 ~122kw @ wheels (Dyno dynamics- shootout)

Low budget – never going to get an ECU

#1 – Lightweight flywheel

#2 – Heavy-duty clutch

#3 – Lower final drive

#4 – Intake - CAI's deliver superior results.(Eg: INJEN / AEM / GruppeM)

#5 – Header + S2000 cat + cat-back system (60mm minimum)

#6 – Spec A2 camshafts / valve springs / head gasket 0.3mm

Power output: 126 ~128kw @ wheels (Dyno dynamics- shootout)

NB: Add K100 ECU for 144~146kw

Low / Med budget – Never going to crack the engine open.

#1 – Lightweight flywheel

#2 – Heavy-duty clutch

#3 – Lower final drive

#4 – Intake - CAI's deliver superior results.(Eg: INJEN / AEM / GruppeM)

#5 – Header + S2000 cat + cat-back system (60mm minimum)

#6 – ECU + Dyno tuning

Power output: 128 ~132kw @ wheels (Dyno dynamics- shootout)

Medium budget – Hate noise & Stop @ ECU

#1 – Lightweight flywheel

#2 – Heavy duty clutch

#3 – Lower final drive

#4 – Intake – Modified stock / GruppeM or Pipe style CAI (NB: CAI loud @ WOT)

#5 – Stock exhaust system / or stock JDM DC5R exhaust system

#6 – Spec A2 camshafts / valve springs/ 0.3mm head gasket / ECU / dyno tuning / heavy duty engine mounts.

Power output: 136 ~138kw @ wheels (Dyno dynamics – shootout)

8600rpm rev limit

Medium budget – Stop @ ECU

#1 – Lightweight flywheel

#2 – Heavy duty clutch

#3 – Lower final drive

#4 – Intake – CAI's deliver superior results.

#5 – Header + S2000 cat + cat-back system

#6 – Spec A2 camshafts / valve springs/ 0.3mm head gasket (Compression up from 11.0:1 to 11.4:1 / Titanium retainers / ported head / JDM intake manifold / ECU / dyno tuning / heavy duty engine mounts.

Power output: 148 ~150kw @ wheels (Dyno dynamics – shootout)

9000rpm rev limit

apparently the last one is going to about mid 13 seconds for a 1/4 mile :O

    • The car/ECU will have all the sensor that it needs and expect to have. I think i do not have to explain to you how the Link is way better specialy if you have swapped engine   I just do not want to deal with any "problems" cuz i have only Nistune which i learned is not that great and in my case cant even deal with that speed problem (Link can) And of course it will be way more easier to tune and diagnose and safe. And for the ECU/speed problem...i dont know.
    • Per Mark Roberts of Sonictune: Mark Robert Author At this time, no. No ETA either 2016-17 models. You will be able to purchase and install a 2018.5+ TCU though   TCU purchasing and pricing info! As we near the release of TCU tuning, I am going to answer some questions I get asked often.   What do I need for TCU tuning? At this time, you will need a 2018.5+ TCU to be able to tune. If you have a 2016-to early 2018, you will need to replace your TCU with the newer version. One good way to know if your TCU is good is if you have auto upshift in manual mode in 1st gear around 6500 rpms. If your manual 1st gear goes to 7k rpm and will hit the rev limiter unless you shift, you have the older TCU.   Why do I need to buy another ecu license/phone flash if I already have it on my ECU tune? The TCU is its own computer module. It is completely separate from the ECU. Because of this, you will be required to purchase a TCU license and, if your tuner has it, the phone flash license required to tune it via phone/bluetooth.   Do I need TCU tuning? TCU tuning is NOT required. However, the faster your setup, the more it will assist in track and dragy time consistency.   If I’m ECU tuned by (tuner A) can I get my TCU tuned by (Tuner ? Yes, since it’s a different module and a completely separate flash, you can have two different tuners. However, it is highly recommend that you have both tuned by the same tuner. For me, my TCU tuning will directly complement my ECU tuning style and features and running my ECU and another TCU or vice versa MIGHT cause some issues. At this time and for the foreseeable future, I will only be tuning my current ECU tuned customers TCUs.     I have a SYVECS AWD controller. Do I still need it? Yes! The AWD controllers main job is to control your AWD system. However, with TCU tuning, you will no longer need the auto-shift function as that will be done through the TCU. The AWD controller will still be very beneficial for racers looking to maximize traction on the launch.     Shift schedule changes: holding gears longer at lower pedal input as well as max shift rpm changes. Please note, the new ECU race rom coming out will address 90% of the shitty drivability issues these cars have through custom maps from myself and Racebox—as well as others I am sure.   Increase shift speeds: as seen in the videos I’ve been posting, the TCU shifts much faster once tuned.   Increased shift pressures: as also seen in the videos, much firmer full throttle shifts.

    • The fancy pants red shock tower brace is finally incoming from MX5 Mania, getting it shipped from 'Merica has been a long and problematic process, and GWR, the 'Merican supplier will not ship directly to consumers outside of the US, Mania basically had to order a heap of them, the colour choice was silver, or red, and we all know anything red adds 5 killerwasps of dynotorques..... Whilst it does fit over a 2.5, and I've seen a few photos and videos of it being installed and fitting, google also says it might get real close to the FAB9 intake front runner, people in the US says it does fit with the FAB9 intake, except for one person who said it slightly touched.......so there is that.....LOL..... As it seems that I am the first in AU to have this combination of parts there's no local knowledge about fitment, so I'm just a willing guinea pig in this endeavour, I'll cross my fingers and toes and hope for the best In other news, I ordered stuff from China  on the same day I ordered the 23° silicone bend from Victoria, the stuff from China arrived a day ago, the 23° silicone bend is still travelling around Australia thanks to Australia Post, and "may" be here next week
    • Very good news...I contacted Racebox about it last night. My car is a 2016 so remains to be seen if it is compatible, requires a TCU swap, or is impossible.
