Incident On Thursday Night Regarding New Turbo Laws

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, i posted this thread in order to notify anyone who is on their P plates or P2 provisional licence, well thursday night i was minding my own business driving home from my mates house at around midnight, i was driving sensibly doing nothing wrong, now i spotted at unmarked police car go through a red light at the intersection where portrush road meets magil road i instantly thought yeeh im gonna get pulled over, so the female police officer pulled me over did a rego check and brethalizer and searched my car for defects but could not find anything, so she went back to her car with my licence and approaches me saying "do you realise that you are under the new high performance vehicle law so therefore you are not able to drive this car" so i argued the point that her statement was incorrect but according to her it was not and she asked me to take my keys out and lock my car as i was not driving the car home, so i remained calm and contacted my dad, now i was not prepared to leave my car on magil road waiting for someone to pick it up but i knew that her statement was incorrect and the fact that she didnt know much about this new law that sapol are trying to enforce really pissed me of, i asked if i could be escorted home but she replied no so i had one of my mates drive the car home, after a sleepless night i spoke to the sargent at holden hill first thing friday morning and he claimed he didnt know much about it, and i ended up getting in contact with the head office of the motor reg who claimed that i am able to drive this vehicle as i am on my P2s not P1s, after trying to get in contact with the officer that pulled me over i unfortunatly did not get her name or badge number which did not help me, after a long day of stressing out unable to get to work due to not being able to use my parents cars due to them being V8s and Twin turbos i recieved a call from the officer that had pulled me over stating that she further investigated the matter and realised that she F***D up and this new law did not apply to me as i had my Ps a year b4 the new law came out, now if she took further action and impounded my car or had taken my licence even a fine we would of ended up in court and she would of been in big trouble, im still not happy about this issue because i think skylines get targeted way to much bcoz of dickheads driving stupid in them especially P platers this should of never happened thursday night if this officer looked at my licence history correctly, now i would like to advise anyone who owns a skyline that is on their P plates or P2 licence to find out when they got their P plates and if it was after or b4 this date because she claimed that they were really cracking down on this after a meeting 2 weeks ago that focused on high performance cars and i hate to say it but skylines where definetly at the top of the list according to this officer!!

Cheers

I got defected around xmas time

in hindley street ( no surprise there)

anyway guy was a top bloke

and suprised that i didnt cut sick and act like a dickhead

i knew what was wrong with my car

got done for wheels petruding and to low

i never got questioned about my license

even though i told him the car was turbo

and he most of the engine bay

without noticing the boost tee

and high performance cars??

arnt xr6's pretty powerful but dont fall into the category

i know alot of xr6s that can destroy skylines

and are legal

I hope your not talking about n/a xr6's ? Must bee stock boat anchor of a Skyline?

But definatley a grey area "high performance". There are plenty of cars that come to mind that would keep up if not whip a stock Skyline yet they dont fall into that catagory. Very hard to enforce imho.

As for the author of this thread, could have been a lot worse mate but good on you giving other p platers the heads up.

Na fg xr6 13.7sec down quater

Killed my old 190rwkw skyline.

Fords r faster then you think

FG's are decent, (i was actually a Service Advisor at a Ford dealership). The trans is what does it for them, the ZF 6 speed and the 5 speed in the FG are awesome, but anything BF (without the ZF) and earlier would truly struggle.

Please use paragraphs next time lol

Glad it turned out for you at least. Cops aren't all bad, and the fact they admitted it without jerking you around the legal system is something to be grateful for. True the inconvenience was just that, but at the end of the day you know know definitively that its a non issue. If it ever happens in future, I'd call up the head office of motor reg and put them onto the officer in question. On the extra-plus side, you weren't defected. Winning!

aha sorry about the paragraphs issue, yeeh i was quite lucky that there were no defects issued, i was quite pissed of that she did not have a complete understanding of the new law and acted upon information that was incorrect especially at around midnight on a thursday night and i was certainly not prepared to leave my car on magil road considering how many skylines and stageas have been stolen around that area!

Holy fullstops.. I don't think i even read past one. Glad you didn't get rammed or anything bad come out of it though, kind of why im not bothering driving my car for a while as skylines i believe are becoming target's for anyone.

A police officer should know the law before acting on it. For those that are still unsure, if you held a provisional license BEFORE the the day these laws took effect, these rules do not apply.. Normal provisional conditions still apply

But really, any motorist should know what their license conditions are..

But really, any motorist should know what their license conditions are..

So should the police though... Can you imagine what would have happened if he'd really tried to argue the point, even though he knew he was right?

As you said they should know the laws they are enforcing

so the whole thread is about a cop who got it wrong? and you didnt end up getting penalised whatsoever?

No this whole thread is about how awesome Ford's are :P

how do u think i feel, modded gtr on my l's..... touch wood i havent been looked at yet, i dont drive it at night, only to n from work in peak hr which is only from town to henley,

my dad occasionally drives at nite but hes 53 and the car is in his name which helps

the laws wont apply to me because im over 25 years of age- FTW

    • I got back to Japan in January and was keen to get back on track as quickly as possible. Europe is god-awful for track accessibility (by comparison), so I picked up a first-gen GT86 in December just to have something I could jump into right away. The Skyline came over in a container this time and landed in early January. It was a bit battered after Europe, though—I refused to do anything beyond essential upkeep while it was over there. The clutch master cylinder gave out, and so did the power steering. I didn’t even bother changing the oil; it was the same stuff that went in just before I left Japan the first time. Naughty. Power steering parts would’ve cost double with shipping and taxes, so knowing I’d be heading back to Japan, I just postponed it and powered through the arm workout. It took a solid three months to get the car back on the road. Registration was a nightmare this time around. There were a bunch of BS fees to navigate, and sourcing parts was a headache. I needed stock seats for shaken, mistakenly blew 34k JPY on some ENR34 seats—which, of course, didn’t fit—then ended up having the car’s technical sheet amended to register it as a two-seater with the Brides. Then there’s the GT86. Amazing car. Does everything I want it to do. Parts are cheap, easy to find, and I don’t care what anyone says—it’s super rewarding to drive. I’ve done a few basic mods: diff ratio, coilovers, discs, pads, seat, etc. It already had a new exhaust manifold and the 180kph limiter removed, so I assume it’s running some kind of map. I’ve just been thrashing it at the track non-stop—mostly Fuji Speedway now, since I need something with higher speed after all that autobahn time. The wheels on the R34 always pissed me off—too big, and it was a nightmare getting tires to fit properly under the arches. So I threw in the towel and bought something that fits better. Looks way cleaner too (at least to me)—less hotboy, less attention-seeking. Still an R34, though. Now for future plans. There are a few things still outstanding with the car. First up, the rear subframe needs an overhaul—that’s priority one. Next, I need to figure out an engine rebuild plan. No timeline yet, but I want to keep it economical—not cutting corners, just not throwing tens of thousands at a mechanic I can barely communicate with. And finally, paint. Plus a bit of tidying up here and there.
    • Nope, needed to clearance under the bar a little with a heat gun, a 1/2" extension as the "clearancer", and big hammer, I was aware of this from the onset, they fit a 2.0 with this intake no problems, but, the 2.5 is around 15mm taller than a 2.0, so "clearancing" was required  It "just" touched when test fitting, now, I have about 10mm of clearance  You cannot see where it was done, and so far, there's no contact when giving it the beans Happy days
    • It's been a while since I've updated this thread. The last year (and some) has been very hectic. In the second-half of 2024 I took the R34 on a trip through Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland - it was f*cking great. I got a little annoyed with the attention the car was getting around Europe and really didn't drive it that much. I could barely work on the car since I was living in an inner-city apartment (with underground parking). During the trip, the car lost power steering in France - split hose - and I ended up driving around 4,000kms with no power steering.  There were a few Nurburgring trips here and there, but in total the R34 amassed just shy of 7,000kms on European roads. Long story short, I broke up with the reason I was transferred to Europe for and requested to be moved back to Japan. The E90, loved it. It was a sunk cost of around EUR 10,000 and I sold it to a friend for EUR 1,500 just to get rid of it quickly. Trust me, moving countries f*cking sucks and I could not be bothered to be as methodical as I was the first time around.
    • I assume clearances were all a-okay?
    • Shock tower brace is in +5Kw....LOL
