Hey all, I've been searching through . If i remember correctly I found a topic a longgg time ago about good shipping/trucking companys and peoples experiences with them and costs, Basically I've got a few R32's lined up from melbourne i wanna take a look at . And if i like one And decide to buy it I want to get everything sorted and get it over to Perth . I've been reading through some other peoples topics but cant quite make sense of what people are saying theres alot of different things going about and i cant seem to quite understand what the relevant steps are to going over buying the car and bringing it back, At this point I'm led to believe You go over, Look at the car, Buy it, Fill out Change of Ownership forms or whatever they're called, Go to a licensing centre and let them know? Do you have to get it unregistered or anything like that??, Then sort out a really good company that will take care of it when bringing it over, Then Do i need some sort of permit to drive it to the pits when it comes off the truck / ship whatever. Then take it over the pits get it rego'd for Perth and There you have it. If any of this is wrong please feel free to correct me , Or point me in the relevant direction . Thanks again

Oh p,s if anyone can spare the link to that topic i mentioned above would be greatly appreciated, I have done some medium research into companys, but its hard to tell how good they are so i thought id ask for some people who have had first hand experiences.

Hi buddy. Buying from interstate isn't importing. Importing is when you buy something from overseas and have it shipped here. whistling.gif

I was in your shoes a few months ago as well. What I'd recommend is giving the Department of Transport a call or email to confirm what needs to be done by either yourself or the seller. If someone accidentally tells you information that is wrong on these forums and you run into dramas, it won't do much good to say "Oh yeah I was told by some guy in NSW on the Skyline forums.." All the best. :)

I ended up buying locally as after crunching the numbers I realised I would have to realistically add more than $5000 on top of my purchase price of a modified GTR to have it pass the pits and regoed in WA.

If it's a very special low km, stock R32 GTR you're looking for, it may be worthwhile. But if you're just after an average condition GTST for under 10k, I'd probably just wait for the right one to pop up locally.

It is easier to make your entire fist fit in your bottom.

That is all I'll say.

Not only do you need to remove all mods. You also need to re-engineer many things... plus the dickhead inspectors scrutinize everything import car coming from interstate.

It sucks

Buying interstate is about as brain taxing and stressful as importing. Except the end result isn't as exciting

Ah sounds to hard, Cbf ill just buy a 32 Gtr locally, This ones done 126,000 genuine km's has the service book still from japan when it first came out of the factory , Then again a Low Km's 32 GTR that hasnt been rebuilt thrashed crashed rebuilt thrashed blown rebuilt again with the odo wound back is a bit of a miracle these days, Oh well Can only hope for the best :) . I just thought 32gtr with 126,000km on the clock and the service book from japan was a good buy.

It is, but it's nothing that can't be attained in Perth man :)

And besides, it's a Nissan. Odo reading means nothing.

Nissans will break down at 300,000 same amount as they will at 40,000 :)

Another issue is if you purchase an interstate car and you only have a WA licence once the vehicle crosses the border into WA it isn't registered any more, another one of the lovely WA rules. People buy a car sometimes and drive it back not knowing it is unregistered once they cross the border.

Same as some import dealers are registering cars in NSW for a day or two after selling then sending over to WA thinking they can cut corners. It makes no difference at the pits as you need to own the car for over 12 months to avoid an inspection.

So the car people are driving around for a couple of weeks on NSW plates till they find time to get to the pits being un-registered it is not insured even with that over the phone cover note.

Unfortunately for the people bringing the cars over it isn't a well know fact till they get pulled over.

^^^ in addition to the MONTHS wait you have to wait to get an inspection time because the government has flicked all these switches which causes the result we now deal with, which is:

Massive demand and strain on the inspection centers

+

limited resources.

Think about it.

There's like. What. 6/8 centers in the metro area.

Each centre has what. 2 lanes and sometimes1 lane??

Thats ~10/12 lanes functioning.

On centers that are only open till 4pm mon-fri.

Each inspection takes 1h+

That's about 70-80 odd cars that can be inspected daily.

Not really relevant to the topic, but think about it.

Our state car transport portfolio relies on this system

Our police do their bit to fuel this issue by handing out a more than necessry amount of defect notices, as well as people trying to get all sorts of new, used, private and dealership cars to be registered

Our entire city relies on this system which is only resourced to process 70-80 cars daily.. Think about that for a moment. :) it's crazy

ive had first hand experience with importing a car interstate... i just brought a stock jdm s15 spec r for 15k on only 80,000 ks it seemed like a good deal so i bought it and figured to do the shipping thing so i can get it to perth (the car was in nsw by the way) and at first it was pretty easy you know drop off the car at the transporting place and fly back to perth and wait for my baby to come. anyway once it got here i had to get rego for it went over the pits got a list of all the things to change and fix so i got them fixed and went through pits again... passed and now im driving a japanese silvia s15 thats legal in WA but i calculated it all up and roughly i payed 20k and a lot of stress

but even tho it took so long geting it registered and gave me headaches i love my car and i would do anything for that baby siting in my garage what im trying to say is that if you love cars and you really want that 32 from sydney or whatever go for it but if you dont then dont bother with it

Importing is a purists game. Nothing more.

Importing is not for the guy wanting to save a grand off buying local anymore...

Importing is for the guy that wants "that one"

My friend recently got his gx71 chaser imported done registered n dusted all done...

He had the choice of building an mx73 Cressida with a 1jz conversion with r154 5mt by buying locally...

However instead he spent 9-10 grand importing a gx71 chaser instead, 1gge motor, 5mt...

Seeing that car... That 24 year old car looking brand new swimming up the freeway, followed by my soarer... Would be an amazing sight.

I honestly don't care what anybody says. Nothing is as captivating on the road as an imported car.

My advice is if you want the car, it's going to be worth it no matter what you come across... So do it :)

He's going vvti 1jz soon... Reason being is because he hopes to keep the car forever and vvti 1jz is a safe reliable bet

I had one of my GTRs trucked over from Queensland to Adelaide , costs were about $600 , getting the car compliant was about $5000

Dont let this scare you , at least you will get what you exactly want in the end !!!!!

1G-GZE + compound GT3071R would be awesome

Not to go off topic however the 1g is a fine motor If you take it for what it is...

Ie: accept the fact it's a 2.8 liter six that isn't intended for large power and has head gasket issues from it's old age.

If you do that it's fine

Same goes with the rb25... If you accept that it sucks then it's not that bad :-D

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways. 
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.

    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
