Hey guys

got the GTR goin into the exhuast within the next couple of days and trying to get a figure on how much i should be paying...

the set up is a single high mount borg warner on a twinscroll manifold

Basically the work i need done is a

4 inch v-band dump pipe to the cat

plumb the two wastegates into the exhuast

setting up the plumbing from compressor side of the turbo to the intercooler

im guessin stainless will be the way to go?

any input is welcome

cheers

Decent grade stainless with mandrel bends - I reckon some where around a gorilla. Actually you may get a bit of change from $1000.

$400 for the dump, $300 for the wastegates, $150 for intercooler piping.

That's my guesstimate.

Is that the going rate for a gorilla these days? $1000 is quite affordable, I could really use a gorilla around the house :P

I'd pay 400-600 for the dump including WG plumbing, add another 200 if the WGs need to be plumbed up to the manifold.

Probably another 100 ontop for the hotside pipe. Would pay up to but not over a grand for that job.

lol god I didnt think a 5 year age gap would do so much.......

cool, i was hoping it would be around the 1000 figure, hopefully less

obviously need the oxy sensor adaptors for the dump as well...

what do u guys reckon about keeping the dump pipe mild steel and heat wraping it?

plumbing 2 gates in is going to be a head f**k for the guy doing it. I'd say $1000 would be a minimum for this job. Don't forget you will need flexible bellows for the gate pipes as you won't line 2 up simultaneously once it's made. It takes just as long (sometimes longer) to do the wastegate returns - just because they are smaller, doesn't make them any easier. I reckon whoever does it would be looking at a day to do it which is going to work out to be $500-800 just in labour.

If the cat isn't already 4 inch it will also be hard to adapt it with a flange as 4inch only comes in 3 bolt triangle flanges or vband. Vband won't go easily onto a 3.5 inch cat and neither will a 3 bolt triangle flange. It will need to be stepped down before the cat and that reduces the amoutn of room you have to run the gate returns

Not an exciting job

yea definatly no denying its goin to be a major pain in the ass and labour will be the most expensive part...suppose i can expect a high end figure of 1500?

As long as they do a good job i dont mind payin a few hundred bucks extra.

do we think the dump should be stainless still?

The material wont change the cost much, I would go stainless, especially if you plan to go e85.

I think $1500 would be the starting price for a good job, there is an easy 2 days doing it all properly, grinding the inside smooth takes time but nets the extra gains. Dont skimp as crunching the fabricator and making him cut corners will cost you power.

Its not just an exhaust shop you're going to is it? A good performance workshop/fabricator is required imo.

No plans for E85 as of yet but definatly an option in the future

Your right might as well go the stainless, looks better too

The car is gettin done at Unigroup so ive organised through Yavuz to get the exhaust done, not sure who he uses but im sure they would have to be of a decent quality

Stainless costs double that of mild steel in the same tube size unless you buy it wholesale in which case it's about 75% dearer

So around $200 in tubing instead of $150 right? Labour is where the cost is.

Feel the tension :3some:

As for WG returns, lately I have been considering the stainless flexible exhaust pipe like what you see on trucks... Theres this very flexible version that sort of slots together rather than the ribbed version.

That's what is inside the stainless woven flex couplings you normally see, I don't know why its not used on its own on cars, can you get it in smaller sizes?

I dont think it can be welded either as its too thin, it needs to be clamped. I agree, it would be great for wastegate piping.

well ive done a few. to do a nice dump pipe easy 4 hours.

plumbing the wastegates in will take longer. massive pain in the ass.

try and build the system using "marman" style v bands. heaps easier to work with and can take alot more tollerance for miss alignment.

the dump and screamer pipes are easy. its just getting the things plumbed into the dump pipe wich is a pain. especialy if you have little v-band wastegates. absolute cok to get on and off with the hinge type clamps.

i know first hand as i just did a 6boost with twin mvs-44 tials. borg warner 9179. on my girlfriends car rb25 r33.. just no room to move. depending where the gates are mounted will dictate how much swaring is involved.

So around $200 in tubing instead of $150 right? Labour is where the cost is.

You didnt do very well in maths at school right? Double? Lol

For example a 90 3" mandrel in ss is 3 times the price of ms.

Please post pics of the completed job so we can all drool.

well i was thinkin about leaving the gates to vent to atmosphere as it would be cheaper but i dont think thats too good of an idea for legality reasons

all i know is im glad im not doin it!!!

Will definatly post some pics when she's all done

    • As I've said elsewhere, I am using the stock intercooler piping path in the engine bay, and a return flow cooler, and making ~250 rwkW (without any effort put into trying to turn it up past there just yet) and expect to be able to make some more, and frankly, I would be perfectly happy with 260-270rwKW. This is peak road Skyline usability territory. You go past there and, sure, the car will snap necks more when it's on boost, but it will also break shit all the time, cost a (even larger) fortune in tyres, etc etc. Anyway, I also do not like the over-the-fan pipe path, and you don't have to do it.
    • I see, honestly I’m not too fussed about the looks. The only reason to go plenum is to make the piping easier instead of the classic over the rad etc.
    • Not easy to quantify wrt something like how many fractions of a second slower it would be over 0-100. But given that a 250-300rwkW car is able to do that launch sprint in 5-6 sec (and faster with appropriate tyres, and surface)..... giving up as much as a second would feel like torture. A ~450HP capable turbo is not going to make lots of boost in the 2000-3000 rpm range. So, whilst with some boost on hand it will be faster accelerating in that rev range than your engine currently is NA, it will not feel like a fast car until the boost is solidly in. You know what your car feels like right now when you open it up at 2000rpm. if you've ever been in an actual fast car, you will appreciate that the NARB25 is.... not exciting. Well, add some boost and it will be better. But shorten the intake runners and it might not be better at all. It might come out better, but it could end up feeling the same. For me, it's not the 0-X km/h sprints that matter. It is easy to fry the tyres with anything over 200 rwkW. You can't use all the power available in 1st and 2nd anyway, you have to modulate the throttle. What matters is how the car reacts when you're driving in traffic in 4th or 5th and have maybe 2000 rpm on board, and you want/need to add some speed quickly, and don't have time for the downshift. It won't make boost, it will be all NA (at the speeds we're talking about - remember how fast you're going at 2000 in 4th! and don't plan on breaking the limit by too much.) So giving away NA torque is not what I would consider practical for a street car. And retaining that NA torque builds boost faster which makes the car faster. The flashy plenum is not actually better, unless you're looking at a track car where you can keep it on the boil all the time.
    • So how much difference does it make you think? Like 1 second in the 0-100?  I was have smaller turbo so hopefully that spools quick GTX2871.  currently it’s NA so you can imagine pretty slow, but I do want fast accusation a little as there’s not many places I’ll be driving where I go over 80 even near me. So 0-60 and 0-80 targets
    • Short inlet runners cost quite a bit. Dulls off the off-boost torque, and delays boost onset, because arrival of boost is driven by gas flow is a product of the ability to flow air which is torque. This is the reason that the stock manifolds have longer runners. On a 3L, or bigger, you can usually accept the compromise of giving away some torque because the extra capacity gives you a little extra to waste. But on a smaller motor, there's not a lot there to start with. Example, I swapped RB20 out of my R32, 25NeoDET in its place. The "wall of torque" that I experienced afterwards made it all worthwhile. That's because I came from RB20 land where torque is not a thing. But I would not do anything, anything at all, to reduce the low/mid torque I have now, because I remember what it is like to not have it!
