Hi guys,

Looking to start building a 25/30 (my first one) for my project in the next 2-3 months. First off I live in TAS, so there's no specialist mechanics and what not here for this kind of build (but there are good mechanics).

So I am doing as much research as I can before I start.

Yes I have read and looked over every 25/30 thread I can find on here and working on getting my head around it all =)

Am having a little trouble getting my head around the VCT / VVT and the whole oil pressure thing and what to do with my build. There are just so many different ways and methods on here that people have done and how to go about it that I am at a loss with what to do.

My 25 head is NOT the Neo model and has Tomei 270 procams, springs and lifters, new valves might be on the go too. Engine is running 950cc injectors and a Garrett T04Z turbo with Wolf 3D Ver 4 ECU.

My question is: what is your recommendation for the VCT? delete or keep? Oil Drain Back? etc.

2 links that have caught my eye are:

http://www.skylinesa...al-oil-control/

and

http://www.spoolimpo...d-oil-drain-kit

please have a glance over the first link at least for me =)

Would LOVE all the help, advice and feedback I can get =) Thanks much SAU

Tomei Procams are not designed/built as a VCT setup. In that case, no worries about oil feed for that. They are a reasonably large sized spec, and your cylinder head guy should do all the setup to ensure proper clearance between head casting and cam lobes once everything is installed. Solid lifter upgrade from the hydraulics would be advisable. Also valve spring upgrade to cope with the lift and not strike coil bind issues is a big one. You WILL need vernier cam gears to optimise cam timing.

There is value in drilling out the oil returns, installing oil feed restrictors, and doing something with the oil pump.

Running a T04Z there is the potential to make some pretty serious hp. Hope the build is budgeted to deal with a pretty serious upgrade to the reciprocating and rotating bits down low, balancing components etc and allow it to rev nicely.

Actually, when you look over the 30DET build guide, and a few threads in this section, I would think it's highly advisable to check approaches and results from others, and your own build plan and mechanical specs will become much clearer. GL and update as you go along.

Thanks Dale =) pretty much what I had in mind then, thanks for confirming =) and yes, will definitely be doing an oil pump upgrade and fully rebuilt bottom including rods.

Good iea, I'll do just that =) Thanks for the help / advice

    • Sorry to hear your HFM BM57 was faulty,  did you contact HFM I would hope they would be at least grateful for the information if there was some sort of manufacturing fault, you would hope they would be sympathetic even if your item was 2 years old if it had never been fitted. May I ask where it leaked from ?
    • Cats are called Bella, and Donna...  Like that poisonous plant And I remember your 2 monsters, I remember making a little bit of wee when you let them out... LOL I have already installed cat doors into the laundry where their kitty litter is, and the sun room, apart from the cat doors there's not going to be any permanent mounted stuff on the interior walls (interior doors are cheap and easy to replace) I will get a outdoor cat cage thingie once I finish the landscaping out back... https://catnip.com.au/ The only off limit areas are the main bedroom and the gym room....but, currently the cats are curled up in bed, in the main bedroom with the Mrs.....LOL, the off limits for the kittens to the main bedroom lasted about 5 minutes with Jackie I currently only have 1 free standing huge cat tree multiple level scratching post thingie in the lounge room, but, I will be getting another one soon now that I'm happy with the furniture layout in the back room and have a perfect spot for it
    • All of this is making it seem clear that running the Coppermix twin was definitely the way to go, especially in hindsight with how insane tariffs have gotten and the strength of the USD vs yen at the time.
    • That sounds like no chance of even importing one for road registering then Now I see why Duncan wants to check LHD rules for Targa...   I wonder how "bolt in" the AWD would be if you got one imported from the US and swapped it to an AUD one
    • Not to mention they drive like a bucket of bolts! yuck!
