Startup up my R33 this morning, and noticed small amount of white smoke coming from the exhaust. Almost looked exactly like condensation, but to be safe, I drove it into the shed and started to dismantle.

Took the intercooler piping off. Found oil

Took the cam cover breather pipes off. Found oil

So I cleaned out what I could, put it all back together to drive down the road to a garage.

Started the car to make sure I put everything back together right, then smoke started filling up the shed.

It was coming from the exhaust/turbo side. So I thought blown exhaust gasket.

Then realised the oily mess I found before, could of been coming from the turbo and the smoke I can see is it burning.

So I removed the o2 sensor to take a quick peek for any traces of oil.

As soon as I took it off, white smoke started coming out if the hole. Not much, but looked similar to the steam you get when a kettles finished boiling.

So my question is, does this indicate that my turbo seals have blown?

Or could it be that oil is being pushed through the cam cover breathers going into the intake?

Im really hoping the seals on the piston havent blown :(

i'm a bit unclear about the nature of the smoke you are seeing. Is it white or blueish? does it go after the car has warmed up?

From what you've described it is normal condensation. Oil in the places you have mentioned is normal.

You took the O2 sensor off while the car was running?? was it up to temp?

white smoke in the morning is usually just condensation.

black smoke is usually because its running a little rich, might puff out on WOT if you've been pretty soft on the pedal for a while?

blue smoke is the worst, that's usually oil. my GTR puffs a little bit of blue smoke out the exhaust after a power run. the tuner said its probably just the turbo seals. should be fine though, because its not too bad.

i've had smoke puff out from under the bonnet a couple times in traffic? popped the bonnet, and couldnt see where it came from so i just left it.

must've been from the turbo, or some oil that leaked onto a hot manifold and burnt off?

i did have a kinked breather hose from the catch can to the valve in the plennum, so it could've been some oil condensation being sucked through the turbo and burnt through the engine?

who know's, i've fixed the kink now and it hasnt happened again.

Nah its not steam. Ive had a blown head gasket before and its not like that.

The smoke is white. And I pulled the o2 sensor out after the car was off and smoke came out.

I tried letting the car warm up to see what would happen, but the longer i left it, the more smoke came out the exhaust.

I stuck my finger in the o2 sensor hole after i started the car for about 2 minutes, and got oil on my finger.

So oil is coming into the intake and the exhaust

I know a little bit of oil is probably normal, but I wouldnt call this much a little bit.

And I also cleaned all the intake pipes about 2 weeks ago, so only took 2 weeks to fill up with oil.

Im pretty much certain on blown oil seals on the turbo. What do you guys think?

Ive got an rb20 turbo on the way to bolt up to see if that fixes the issue.

If it does, new turbo is in order. But if not, then Im guessing ill have to do a full engine rebuild :(

Nah its not steam.

I stuck my finger in the o2 sensor hole after i started the car for about 2 minutes, and got oil on my finger.

white smoke is from coolant, is it not?? oil is blue and fuel black,

could it be a coolant finding a way into the combustion chamber?

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
