Popped in to a BP servo today to fill up.

I noticed they had signs up stating they no-longer sell LRP.

The bloke behind the counter told me that in 2 months LRP is banned and will no longer be sold by any servo in SA.

Apparently WA have already done this he said.

Time to knock a few degree's of the old mazda's Dizzy. :P

Be buggered if I'm running premium in that thing.

Unleaded is 91-92 RON.

LRP is 96

ULP is 95

BP 98 & Synergy 8000 is 98..

So its either feed it 91 RON with a $1.20 tube of valve master for every 20litres or you can buy a bigger tube. Buy in bulk :)

OR.. retard the timing until it no longer pings + a $1.20 tube of valve master.

OR.. $120 tube of valve master with 98 RON and advance the timing a little bit. :)

I found with my ol' 250 Cortina 91 ULP used to make it ping like buggery.

95-98 didn't ping.

I ran 91 ULP in the mazda for a while and let the other half drive it. She didn't hear it pinging its head off under load, I am 95% sure the motor is basically stuffed because of the pinging :) Oh well.. new set of rings bearings & hone (home bodgy job) modifed exhaust manifold (got a use for the rb20t turbo now) with either a blow or suck through carby. :)

Got to get my car finished first. :)

o.. what can i feed my mini then?? normal gas or premium?

Haven't heard anything like that in QLD yet. Can't be too far away I suppose, my mini might be retireing to the garage for a while again. Hate using additives, it will be so annoying having to remember to add the valve-master for every fill up.

oh no, the poor gemi:(  how much is avgas these days????

You should ask, "how much is the fine for using avgas on the road these days?"

FARKING HUGE, and it is piss easy to spot.

I'd be taking the toluene route myself.

I still think it's odd about them stopping selling LRP - that was a scam anyway. The higher price of "super" was supposedly a "lead tax", then when it changed to LRP, no more lead, still more exxy.

I'd like to hear what their suggestions for pre ULP cars are now, but it is probably "get them off the road".

What the! fined for using AVGAS, god they just keep making life difficult - maybe I will have to get rally rego for the gemi:D either that or just buy an ultralight - then I wouldnt even have to pay tax on the avgas.

Hmm, thats got me thinking, where are they going to get the revenue to replace the lead tax - fark, its gotta come from somewhere - they dont mind taking, but rarely like to give it back. Standby peoples.

Yep, leaded fuels on government roads are a BIG no-no. EPA have a field day with it.

As you say, where will they get the extra cash? Probably by putting the rest of our fuel up too!

Would still love further clarification re the stoppage of selling LRP, even though it is of no consequence to me.

This has been on the board for ages, they are doing it to meet emisson standards.

Some servos will sell premium with an additive, so u can put it straight in ya old beast.

But others will only sell premium and expect you to buy a bottle and put it in yourself.

The fuel companies were going to do this april last year, but delays delays etc

As far as i know, it has already begun...... :-)

And just as everyone tuned there cars to run on LRP lol!

On the price thingy, not too sure on what will happen there, but expect to pay cause its the government naturally!

I just spoke to my brother who came over for the weekend from WA, as far as he knows, they still sell LRP in WA. Interesting part is, LRP doesnt have lead in it at all.

My brother used to work at BP refinery, as a process operator (cracked crude into its components), now works off shore though.

He told me the reason BP actually made 98 ron, was at the time govt regulations were going to completely outlaw leaded, and the oil companies wanted to come up with an unleaded replacement fuel. The spent a fortune on new facilities to enable the low sulphur 98 ron fuel production - and then the govt relaxed its position to allow LRP.

I hope they dont increase the duty on premium unleaded to compensate for the loss of on LRP.

9krpm, I wish I could get unleaded AVGAS, there is a servo around the corner from me that sells a 100ron blend (swear its acutally 101, but sell it as 100) - the stuff is $1.35 a litre though.

AVGAS for an aircraft, doesnt attract anywhere near the same tax that the same stuff being sold for cars does - last time I looked at the price (a couple of years ago now) it was under 50c a litre. Anybody here own or operate a light aircraft:D

Oh, and I think the reason ULP doesnt work in leaded engines, is the lead (or additive in LRP) actually lubricates the valves? so ULP would result in excessive wear and lots of oil being burnt. Spose that sort of undoes the whole anti pollution theories of not selling leaded fuel.

Yeah thats right Steve, and the lead in leaded actually boosted the octane level to 96RON

Meanwhile unleaded is 92RON, 4 points below (Incase u r bad at maths!)

LRP (Lead Replacement Petrol) has tin instead of lead in it. It doesnt have the same properties as good old lead, but they boost the fuel upto the 96RON.

With Premium unleaded, its 95RON, so add a valve lube to the fuel and like magic u can run ya old banga on it. Who knows, it might even run a little smoother than on LRP?!!?

Anybody here own or operate a light aircraft:D

I do! :D

I work at Adelaide airport. My dad also owns a light aircraft. I have run AVGAS in my Gemini quite a few times. I can't see how anyone could tell??? No the exhaust did not change colour.

As far as I'm aware there is no AVGAS that does not contain lead (apart from jet fuel)

Avgas actually contains quite a bit of lead.

Some aircraft are approved for mogas which is basically unleaded car fuel.

How much (per litre) do they charge for it when you put avgas in an plane these days?

Got any spare 44 gallon drums sitting around:)

It's actually become quite expensive in the last year. I think my dad pays on average about $1.15 a litre.

As far as the 44 gallon drum. There was a refuller at parafield selling fuel to car owners a while back, problem is he got busted and got in a lot of trouble. Its now not so easy to get.

You can still get it, you just gotta know the right people. :sly:

that was the impression I got for avgas too and it's not good for the o2 sensors in most modern cars

but one of my mechanic friend said he got some avgas that is lead free and safe on the cat/o2 system.....somewhere in salisbury or parafield garden. I will have to sus out with him next time what he was smoking on that day :(

Also the main problem is that lead lubed the valve seats aswell. W/o the lead, you get valve seat recession; basically where the seat wears away deeper into the head. So thats why all relatively recent cars have harder valve seats so they can tolerate unleaded fuels.

    • Yes. You will need to get the original boost sensor and wire it in. That is.... if you plan to use a stock ECU - even a Nistuned ECU. The Nissan ECU will not operate correctly without it connected. And yes, it will do annoying stuff like you are experiencing. You will almost certainly be better off with some aftermarket ECU, than trying to hunt down rare sensors.
    • Ok so ABS/TCS is "not" the problem. Yeah i know now about the ABS with Nistune(i told that to the Nistune guy) but iam not 100% why or why i dont have ABS. ABS cube is in the engine (always has been) but i had braked couple of times rly hard and brakes just locked and scream. Does all Skylines have ABS cube? That boost sensor https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/367633-wtb-r34-gtt-turbo-pressure-sensor-pics-inside/ Is this it? I need to ask but i have a picture of engine bay and i do not see that (100% is not in that place) If i do not have this the car can do what mine is?(cutting around 4000 rpm) Here is the pic of my engine bay(only one i have) BUT i think i dont have that cuz loom was used from my RB20DE NEO and i know (obviously) that it does not have boost control or any wire to that...) so maybe that is the problem? (i dont know for 100% if that car where the engine is from had that)...but i dont have the loom from that
    • I'm with you here. It's either loom has an issue, OR, injectors are not functioning properly. It could even be they're just constantly dribbling, hence the wet, but not firing.
    • Depending on how long the car sat it is very possible for injectors to be stuck open or closed, I'd get them cleaned and flow tested. Other than that, obviously when the loom changes and the car doesn't start any more....the loom is suspect so some tracing / comparing may be required
    • Harness is for a s1 Rb25det, and it is engine and lower harness.  the old harness had broken off plugs and was in very rough condition/exposed wires and splices etc. it is not able to be put back on the car, I could visually inspect to see if they had rewired any pins on the ecu plug. The fuel pump definitly isn’t turning off it’s an external pump and very loud you can hear it. Will look at the other harness tonight, am also going to pull the fuel rail and watch the injectors spray, will update here with what I find. Pretty sure at this point it has to be something to do with injectors because car will fire up on starting fluid and cas is clicking the Injectors. Fuel pressure is steady 43psi
