As far as I know, its a fact that BP Ultimate (who use the best Western Shelf Crude Oil) refine their fuel to 98 octane, where optimax is like putting a bottle of octane booster in your tank.

I have it on good authority.

I don't use the crap.

BASS OUT

So Bass, what do you get when you buy Ultimate in Sydney, where there is no BP refinery? What about Melbourne, where there is also no BP refinery? Ask your "good authority" where Western Shelf Crude is actually refined?

Shell doesnt even sell Optimax in perth as a 98 octane fuel, We only get Ultimate and Vortex (which For our engines doesnt have high enough ron).

I would guess that is because it isn't worthwhile for Shell to ship Optimax accross the desert. They would have to charge more than BP, with their local refinery.

Vortex (which For our engines doesnt have high enough ron).

bs my car runs quite happily on Vortex and notice barely any difference between it and the 98RON stuff. Maybe if I was taking it on the track or drag strip, but for the road its fine.

I run Optimax without problem.

TonyGTst has told me he's had no issue with using Vortex.

I have a fuel card for my job "free fuel, go me!!!" and the only premium I can buy is Vortex. I didn't have any problems with running it. Maybe people with more delicately tunned cars would notice a difference cause mine was pretty stock. I tried Optimax once and would never do it again. :)

I went through a complete fuel test using BP98, Vortex, Opimax, Mobil synergy98 in one day while trying to keep constant temps.

knock levels were as follows Higher being worse and 75+ being an audible ping.

BP98 :27

Mobil synergy :37

Optimax :69

Vortex :80

BP98 +30% toluene :30 (plus 7 degrees advance) =)

Tests were done in SA. I have run both BP98 and Optimax in Sydney and found BP98 to be better, however as Sydneykid and others have stated the shell refinery uses old technology and batches differ. I would never use any other fuel in SA accept BP98 as I always got exactely the same knock level. Here in Sydney my levels are always different...again backing the fact BP uses optimax. I have given up and now have a cheap supplier for toluene. I am yet to find a fuel here I can tune to and trust.

Damn. Good thing I don't put Vortex in a Skyline anymore. What’s the deal with Av-Gas. I have absolutely no idea what would happen if you put it in a car. Does anyone know??

AvGas has lots of lead in it, so filling up the cat and coating the lambda sensor.

I used Wynns pro strengh for ages until my plugs were coated to the max with brown red sot. Have heard reports that they clog injectors..... Have used Nulon as of late and the plugs seem to be cleaner. Nothing close to toluene tho. I have been using tolunene at the same cost for a bottle of booster for a while now. (Hint: It's used in printers and costs a fraction of the price $2.20 at litre) =) nice

Now that is interesting. I also noticed when I changed my plugs they had the brown red soot on them It must have been from the Wynns as you said cause I tried it for a while and didn't really notice any difference.

By the way what colour is Toluene? Blue Cyan or Magenta? Hehehe. :)

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
