Hi,

Bit of background,

Atm i have a N/A Mkiv Supra, I had always wanted a supra but have found that it is too space limited and impractical.. So i'm converting to the darkside and considering a skyline , which i had limited down to either a R33 GTR or R34 GTS (But that's another discussion).

I get off my P's in 12 months so was looking to buy one within that time frame, and also having a bombadore daily until i'm on my opens.

Because i've always been a supra man my skyline knowledge isnt that great but i have been doing my reading, and from what i can find the only 6 Speed skyline was the R34 GTR?

At the time that i found this out i was a little crushed, and it seemed like a clear deal breaker for team skyline, but i've been thinking about it and its still really the only car that comes close to all my criteria..

(room for 4, rwd, manual, aesthetically pleasing, Sub 50K, and not a turbo Taxi AKA XR6T etc..)

The car wont be a daily driver, but it will certainly get driven a lot, a holiday interstate regularly..

I believe my supra sits on ~2900 RPM at 100km/h, which is a little high for my liking, but it also is only a 5 speed..

I have done a little reading and believe the R33 GTR sits at about the same at that speed, but its also a completely different motor that i'm not familiar with..

My biggest concerns about having the motor rev at 3k + for 8+ hours were wear on the motor, and excess fuel usage (Not biggest concern but still at the back of my mind)..

Just after a little input about how the 5speed gearing is, and what BPU Skylines are like on fuel and reliability (Remembering im used to the bulletproof 2j :D )

6 Speed doesn't mean rev lower.

My S2000 revs at 3350rpm @ 100kmh.

Just ratios.

As for sitting there for a long period of time - will be fine.

hmmmm. i forgot what mine sits at, i know my 2nd gear tops out at 110kmh... haha

but i think from memory i sit at 2400 or 2500rpm in 5th @ 100kmh.

havent driven the stagea for a couple of weeks. so dont quite remember.

but i think the 5th gear finished revving at 260kmh or so when hitting red line.

yeah as above, 6 speed doesn't mean it's a 5 speed box with an extra gear above 5th. the overall spread of ratios isn't that much different to a 5 speed.

as for sitting at 3000rpm at 100kmh for hours, it isn't an issue. (and fuel usage isn't an issue either). they were designed for this. pretty much every 4 cylinder car on the market will do it. skylines aren't some mystical creature that is totally different to every other car on the market. they are just another car.

of course when you compare it to the big aussie 6's and 8's that sit on about 1800rpm at 100kmh it seems high, but they only rev to 5000-5500rpm, and have a lot more low down torque, so they can do it. doing 100kmh at 1800rpm in a small turbo 6 would be horrible. you'd be dropping down a gear or 2 at the slightest little hill, or even if driving into a headwind, lol.

Thanks for the responses.

I understand that on a 6 speed, 6th is still usually the only overdrive gear, but i thought the overall ratio would still be a fair bit taller..

Most of my mates and family follow in the "Big aussie 6's and 8's" that rev so low at highway speeds, which is what had me concerned about my type of car cruising at their redline :D

+1

Prolonged operation at 3000rpm for a motor that revs to 7000 isn't going to hurt it

Mine sits on 2250-2300 at 100km/h from memory.

Your criteria states rwd why are you looking at GTRs as they are 4wd??

Just get a gtt and modify it

If i was to get the GTR i would be removing the HICAS system, as well as considering removing the 4wd, or i was going to see if it is possible to actively switch between 4wd and rwd, .. but having never driven a 4wd sports car i was going to look into it further,.

thanks for all the input so far

Don't buy a GTR..

If you want to switch between rwd and awd, go the 32 as thats the only one unless you feel like taking out the driveshaft often..

FWIW, in case you don't know, GTRs are RWD until there is traction loss then the front kicks in.

lol@3krpm

Better off getting a newer turbo taxi if you just wanna travel with it heaps anyway. Also how much more room do you think a 2 door 34 has over a supra?

4 doors are where its at!

dude, the GTR is AWD not RWD

Nope,

10 4 is correct, GTR is RWD until wheel slip or excess acceleration is detected, THEN the front wheel assist kicks in.

Under normal driving conditions, you'll rarely see the torque gauge move much.

There's no 3rd differential in a GTR.

Yes its AWD..

I've only had 3, what would I know..

Everyone knows you need to have owned atleast 3 BN GTRs as well as atleast 2 BCN GTRs for you to "know" about GTR "stuff"

And this is why i still believe that there is a difference between AWD and 4WD. GTR is 4WD as it switches between RWD and AWD Whereas AWD is exactly what it says.....ALL WHEELS DRIVE ALL THE TIME.

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
