Ok guys I'm in need of a new clutch and I've been speaking to NPC and they recommend a button clutch but people have been telling me it's a prick to drive because it's either on and off. I was just wondering if anyone has one here that I could maybe drive for myself to see what it's like before I go and purchase the clutch without knowing what I'm getting myself into. Cheers

I have a cushion button clutch in mine James, just holding the power for now (i dont drop it at 5k though), I think they are good up to 260-280ish? theres a chart somewhere... and feels just as comfy as stock.

^ lol weak.

i have a triple HD full brass button clutch in the Sil. Hamish has one in his 33.

I love it, so does he.

but I guess we arnt 4wd. get a twin plate organic!

When you can launch @ 8000rpm without breaking stuff @ 600hp, and still have traction

Lemme know K?

Yer the one the guy at NPC has recommend is a single carbonic button which is around my price range, but like I said I've never driven a button clutch so I don't know if il love it or hate it and don't want to blow the money on something I might regret

Well guys what would you's do in my situation, got 1k and under to spend. In the future looking at a target of 300ish rwkw I got the option from NPC a organic single $795 del. or single carbonic button $905 del. it's going to be my daily, it will see a lot of spirited hill runs with maybe 2 track days a year or so

Spend more and grab yourself a real twin plate clutch.

Go Nismo Coppermix Twin - shits over all button/organic/lamest 'sounding' clutch.

My 2 cents.

It's either spend less now and have it last two minutes or spend more and have it last a long period of time.

As for how it feels, I've had HD button and HD cushioned button as well as the stock clutch and Extreme Organic.

For sure the button is the 'hardest' to drive, but it's not like driving something from the '60's or anything. Initially it will bite like crazy and you will need a few extra rpm to get the thing

moving. But you learn pretty quick how to use it.

The clutch you use will depend on how long you want to to last, how much power and how you use it.

Like Ash says, if your going for 400+kw and launching it, then the clutches you have mentioned will not last till lunch.

But if you are going for <300kw and easy launches then the ceramic maybe ok.

RWD is different to GTR btw, as the R has more grip and much more strain in the driveline.

Exedy cushion button, will be fine for what you have now...very friendly for the street, allows you to slip the clutch a fair bit. Anyone who's had one of these clutches, swears by them, until they exceed the power limits of it. I've done hundreds of launches and it still has the cushion lining.

If you're chasing power down the track, then bad luck, you can't have the best of both worlds and will have to fork out some good dosh for something a lot tougher and harder on the legs / in traffic than the cushion button.

Hmm might just give the the NPC button clutch a go..but someone at work was saying il be screeching the tyres all the time because you have to rev it and practically drop it..true or false? And what would it be like on a steep hill..roll back or...?

Exactly. A GTR with the extra weight and moving the 4WD will make you pay dearly with a nasty clutch.

Put it this way, my Nismo twin has taken easily 300-400 launches, 50 of those on drag radials before the diff destroyed itself and i tell you, the clutch was smelling like it was farked. Let it cool down though and it was good again.

Plus it's been in the car for ~30,000kms going off the old owner etc. So it's certainly proved it's value.

Only problem is they are ~2k - so depends James. If you wanna do DECA type stuff and are going to be doing launches, then you'll need to spend. And lets face it, why have a GTR if you ain't going to launch it? :D

+11ty

As Birds says that 'cushion', which is a heavier plate with more loading, is 'easier' to drive as it allows you to slip the clutch and not have to rev it more than usual to get it off the line at the lights. The brass button or full button or puk or whatever you want to call it, the plates with the cut outs, light and without too much loading require you to use more revs to get the car moving. I'm not sure if the compound on the plates differ that much, much the surface area does, cushion having more.

From a RWD stand point I can tell you that wheel spin on inclines from lights, yes. Coming away from taffic lights with little revs results in bogging down / stall (those early morning trips to Winton I remember you!), yes. If you give it hell and launch away does it hold, yes. Does it pickup quicker than the stoker (less weight) yes.

That is 210rwkw on 255 KU36/RSR's.

If getting a NISMO twin is out of the price point, then a cushion is the option, while knowing the limits of the clutch.

    • Will have a look at that. I cant see any leaks
    • Put another overflow bottle (ie, a 1.25 coke bottle or similar) under the overflow hose and see if it is being pushed out there or if it is disappearing into the engine.
    • Staring on a stand is no issue. You just have to wire everything up, give it fuel and cross your fingers that the stand is robust enough. Arranging the inlet plumbing is often the hardest part, without any surrounding structure to hand some of it from. No need for coolant if you only want to run it for <1 minute. As to the gearbox - I think the little Aisin box is a bit stronger than the other small Nissan boxes that went behind SRs, but I wouldn't be too keen to test its limits with the torque of a boosted 25. I don't know if you can retain the box and the tailshaft. The box won't connect to the RB without an adapter of some sort, which is either a plate that will push the engine forward (which is not good for fitting it into the bay's available space) or push the box back, which messes with the box position and tailshaft length - OR - cut and shut work on the bellhousing, which is a long way from "least modification". I'd be buying a new 370Z 6 speed or similar, doing what has to be done to that to make it fit RB (ie, cut and shut bellhousing) and the requisite tailshaft custom/mods.
    • Hi Everyone I am from West Pennant Hills in NSW. Been too busy until recently to attend to my RB25DET Series 2 engine until recently. I am planning to stick it into the S15 shell at this stage, unless a nice SR20DET turns up... For now, i am going to try and get the RB25 running and working well then decide what gearbox to use. My preference is to retain the SR20DET  6 speed gearbox and tail shaft to retain as much and least modifications as i can avoid. I am an old guy and won't be doing any heavy drifting so i don't need a bullet proof gearbox Does anyone have experience with starting the RB on a stand? I got everything setup as much as I can with the info i can find... endless searching and videos on Youtube I would be great to get some pointers Cheers Songo
    • Hey all, Recently have had my s1 r33 gtr serviced and noticed my coolant reservoir was topped up to the max line. Took the car out for 1 yesterday and noticed today the reservoir is completely empty.  Any ideas? Radiator is full
