I need some advice on which oil to use for my R33 GTR.

The car is stock standard apart from the exhaust and I currently use Motul 8100 X-Cess 5w40. http://www.motul.com/nz/en/products/52

It costs $100 NZD here for 5L of X-Cess.

I was wondering if the Royal Purple HPS 10w40 http://royalpurple.com/motor-oil-hps.html would be a good alternative instead of the Motul because I could get 5L for $60 NZD rather then $100 NZD for the Motul oil.

I've always waited till Repco do their motul 20% off and grabbed X-Cess for $65 (AUD) for 5L (I haven't done this in awhile as I've still got plenty of GW Suigi S 6000 to use up). From what I can tell about that particular RP product that it might just be a semi-synth (comparable to Motul 4100 Turbolight).. as far as I know only the RP XPR racing oil is fully synthetic (which would be comparable to X-Cess).

That being said there is absolutely nothing wrong with a good semi-synth on a street-only driven skyline, as long as it's changed every 6 months or 5000km.

Another +1 for 8100 X-Cess. Been using it for a few years now, changed to Castrol Edge when I couldnt find any 8100 around where I live but found my oil pressure was to high on cold starts, 8100 is much better :)

Im sure either will be fine.. i currently use RP

but looking for a cheaper alternative since i will be overfilling my sump to 6L, ill now need to buy another bottle

Does Motul come in 1L bottles?

    • Nope, needed to clearance under the bar a little with a heat gun, a 1/2" extension as the "clearancer", and big hammer, I was aware of this from the onset, they fit a 2.0 with this intake no problems, but, the 2.5 is around 15mm taller than a 2.0, so "clearancing" was required  It "just" touched when test fitting, now, I have about 10mm of clearance  You cannot see where it was done, and so far, there's no contact when giving it the beans Happy days
    • It's been a while since I've updated this thread. The last year (and some) has been very hectic. In the second-half of 2024 I took the R34 on a trip through Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland - it was f*cking great. I got a little annoyed with the attention the car was getting around Europe and really didn't drive it that much. I could barely work on the car since I was living in an inner-city apartment (with underground parking). During the trip, the car lost power steering in France - split hose - and I ended up driving around 4,000kms with no power steering.  There were a few Nurburgring trips here and there, but in total the R34 amassed just shy of 7,000kms on European roads. Long story short, I broke up with the reason I was transferred to Europe for and requested to be moved back to Japan. The E90, loved it. It was a sunk cost of around EUR 10,000 and I sold it to a friend for EUR 1,500 just to get rid of it quickly. Trust me, moving countries f*cking sucks and I could not be bothered to be as methodical as I was the first time around.
    • I assume clearances were all a-okay?
