25GTT
Hi Guys, Well i bought a plantronics 777 headset about 4 months ago (coincidentally same time i started skyrim) and now i am obsessed with wearing gaming headphones whilst playing. i bought them for about $100 (JB hifi) but now want the next level of audio experience. Whilst i am seeing on the forums there are ones called atX70 you need a sound card etc to run them which will end up costin about $300. My plantronics has a usb adaptor that basically does dolby digital without the soundcard. So what are your recommendations around the $200 mark and it has a dolby digital option. I dont mind the Logitech wireless g930 as i have read some good reviews on that. Any other recommendations? R31Nismoid
I brought a pair for gaming (Logitech USB ones, with Mic) on recommendation from a mate, honestly wasted money. I have gone back to my 4yo setup of Sennheiser 555s (modded to 595 spec). And a $5 Zalman clip on Mic. Need a sound car to run them... Let me tell you though, the Logitech's simply do not compare. The sound is that much different it's ridiculous. The Senn's are deep and rich, giving much better sound. The USB Logitech are super treble/tinny compared to the Amp'd Sennheisers. If i can notice the sound, and my hearing is certainly not 100% perfect - then anyone with really good hearing will notice it even more. oweban
I've got the G35's, found them better than the G930s (got both actually) a bit of tweaking inside the Logitech control panel, has decent sound. Nothing that my incoming Sony XBA4's won't shit on though. 25GTT
Thanks guys, the Sony you mention though looks to be an in ear headphone? Are you saying that would be better than the g930 for gaming? oweban
Oh, it's more just earphones, not really a gaming thing. I was talking pure audio quality Plus the XBA4's will be ~ $500 anyway. Was in Tokyo for the launch last September, was awesome. But yeah, I'm quite enjoying the G35s. I'm sure there's better out there... But I didn't pay for these. 25GTT
Are yours wireless? Just to give you boys a heads up though, Logitech shop has them for 169 office works has them for 179. I bought the office works one then realized that they advertised the best price or they match it and take off 5 percent, so I called em, verified logitech shop pricing and got them for 160 Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/393263-pick-me-a-headset/#findComment-6265576 Share on other sites
oweban
yeah man, G930's, wireless. Got both them and G35's (wired, got the 35's for free, bonza). Pretty happy with them, can get uncomfortable after about 7 hours though Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/393263-pick-me-a-headset/#findComment-6265877 Share on other sites

Fry_33
I remember doing a little research about headphones a while back when I thought my Sennheiser ones had died. Turned out to be the front audio jack no my computer though Anyway, after a bit of looking round there were quite good reviews for the Audio Technica AD700's. People would use these and then just a clip on Mic ($10-20). You could also take the headphones elsewhere if you wanted, ie. no mic attached. Main cons were the large wire rings on top. You can get models which are open air or sealed on your ears. I think the AD referred to the open ones. Actually.. you've got me thinking about buying some new headphones.. damn you! 25GTT
Ok guys, I got my g930 and I need to be honest, I am extremely disappointed . The lack of bass is apalling and when you do play with the graphic eq and add more bass you can turn it up or it distorts. The only advantage would be the wireless which is nice but that's where it ends. My plant tonics 777 sound so much better and louder. On top of this it keeps on showing error messages that it cannot locate USB headset please disconnect and reconnect. Every time I reboot it comes up about 15 times until I press ok. 25GTT
Nice one, ok it definitely helps but still no where near it should be. I am no audiophile but I can tell you the sound out of it is like something you would get from a 20dollar headset. I really want them to sound amazing and am giving them every opportunity to grow on me, but I really recommend to stay away from them. P.s I should have checked the reviews on amazon prior to purchase, so many pissed off people Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/393263-pick-me-a-headset/#findComment-6275043 Share on other sites
R31Nismoid
The USB Logitech are super treble/tinny compared to the Amp'd Sennheisers. Can't say you weren't warned! They are pure gaming headphones for FPS type games where you need to hear footsteps better. For anything else, no good IMO and my Senn's are "good enough" for a FPS even with booming soundstage of bass Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/393263-pick-me-a-headset/#findComment-6279584 Share on other sites
25GTT
yeah fair enough Nismoid. Are your senns wireless? I like the idea of the wireless headphone. My plantronics 777 is nice sounding but the wire gives me the sh*ts, even gets caught under my wheel of my chair sometimes. I really want a nice wireless system but not sure now if that even exists! P.S. Sending my logitech g930's back to officeworks. their head office has accepted the refund, only had them for 2 days and that was enough. R31Nismoid
Nope mine are wired. Just run the cable across the desk, i do - doesn't get caught on wheels etc. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/393263-pick-me-a-headset/#findComment-6280187 Share on other sites
barraspalding
I'm also thinking about a good quality surround headphone - wired or not isn't really an issue (wireless bonus). Microphone dont care about. Quality Surround sound from the ps3 (gaming and movies) is the prime requirement. I myself have been through a few gaming headsets and was hell bent on the best audio quality I could get. Went from plantronics -> Razer (barracuda's) -> Logitech (G35's) and came to the conclusion, none of them could supply the quality I desired. I do a lot of music recordings and had a pair of Sennheiser 280HD Pros laying around. Plugged them into my logitech Z-5500 (very good PC sound system) coupled with my Razer AC-1 soundcard and could not believe the difference in clarity and tone. That being said, did my research and settled on the Sennheiser HD 598's coupled with a zalman clip on mic. I will NEVER buy another gaming brand headset so long as studio headsets provide superior quality. Sennheiser 555's would be an excellent choice going from a gaming headset. You just have to decide what you want, Quality sound... or a pretty headset with features (more often than not scarcely used.) 25GTT
ok and is there any good usb style soundcard you would recommend? all reviews at the moment from different websites mean jack sh*t to me right now to be honest. There were countless websites saying how good the G930 was etc etc and as mentioned it was rat sh*t. So will prob go the Audio Tec 700's or now will even look at the Sennheiser 555s. Just want to know a good sound card (USB preferably so i dont have to d*ck around in side my case) I have a brand new asus motherboard with some alright onboard specs, still would rather go with a soundcard but would have to be an ok one, under $100 if possible.
