.82 is too small small for a VL, yet for a 260z! :D

last 2 VLs i have put GT35/40s on with .82, ended up changing to a 1.06 with 1 month of road driving.

.82 are fun, but boost comes on too hard to quick. (again this comes down to the application of the car, .82 would be good for circuit work.)

I'm going with a gt3040 on the rb30det

The car weighs 1200kgs and I am unsure if I should go 1.06 or .82?

The engine wont be reving past 7000rpm and aiming for 500hp at the fly.

Using a turbo that generates extra power past 7000rpm for this motor would be useless.

if boost response is a priority use a GT30R with the larger 1.06 exhaust housing and a large external gate.

Hi DP33, it's great to have a turbo educated person on the forum, please hang around, lots. Can you please explain the above? I would have thought a .82 would have been more responsive. I have found engines with "excessively" large wastegates to be very poor controllers of boost ie; lots of fluctuations. Whereas engines with "correctly" sized wastegates have good boost control. My experience has been that "correctly" sized is a bit smaller than is usually recommended.

If I can ask one more question, what are your thoughts on the Turbonetics T66 compressor as far as "up to date technology" goes?

So what exactly is my turbo??

this core number is not listed as a standard Garrett core.

It must a variant from HKS.

does the plate say anything else on it apart from the CHRA Part No.?

I was pretty much sold on the idea of the gt3040 but the seller of the internally gated gt3540 has come back to me and now I am tempted again.

Is it really too big?

What would be the effect?

Bear in mind that it will be cheaper than the GT3040 which seems to be mid to high $2000's plus supplying your own rb25det exhaust housing?

3540 internally gated, u will never be able to control boost with a internal gate on that turbo.

Why is that?

at around 15psi I thought it still may be up to the task?

Maybe you think that this power level will only keep me happy for a short time before i get silly with the boost? I am sure this will not happen due to a few thoughts of mine:

My 3L engine is not built with stronger internals, don't want to break anything.

I never plan to run 20psi+ for power runs etc, numbers are not my interest.

i have fully seam welded the car, but short of a full cage, the paper thin chassis will have trouble with too much torque across it.

250 at the rears will be plenty.

To testify to the power delivery I want, i almost bought a VH45 before this motor was built.

Anyways, I appreciate the input and if you can clarify to me why you think this it would be great

the internal gate is so small it cant bybass enough exhaust gas to control boost properly and creates 2 much back pressure in the exhaust system. Internal gated turbo are good for little T28's.

You answer your own question.

"250 at the rears will be plenty' at this sort of power a GT30 will be fine - a gt35 will be a bit of overkill, unecessary lag. The bigger the compressor, the later you should be making boost or else you will get surge.

If you want to go a GT35 internal gate, make sure you run a decent AR ratio on the turbine, otherwise the internal gate will have to do too much work. If you can imagine that wastegates are like taps - the more flow you need the bigger the tap should be (garden tap v's fire hydrant). If the turbine AR is too small, it will not be able to pass enough gas to hold lower boost pressures, resulting in boost spikes. Also, the larger the AR, the greater the lag - its always a compromise somewhere.

I understand, I guess I am just looking to take advantage of a bargain.

the big online suppliers all do an internal gated GT30 or GT3040, I think on an exchange basis with the stock turbo to use the exhaust housing. These are over $2k plus the exchange turbo which I dont have, but they seem like the way to go for this application.

If u had the choice, (to anyone out there), Out of a GT35/40R (Part number 714568-0001) and the HKS 3037s (both with 0.8 housings) which would u choose?

Money is no problem, and all support sysytems are taken care of. I have the choice of both of these, but dont know which to choose....I am leaning towards the HKS 3037s though.

The wastegate is just the little flap on the right, so yes it is small

Any performance shop u talk to will always tell u to go external gate with such a big turbo. Coz in the long run u r better off

fwiw, the BA XR6 turbo doesn't have any problems producing 250+ rwkw with an internally gated Garrett GT35.

if it's lower boost you're looking at running, i think it should do fine.

what's your power target? this should help u make your decision.

the HKS 30307S (A/R .87) will help you make up to 330-340rwkw on anywhere up to 25psi, but the Garrett GT35R will allow u to make closer to 380rwkw with the same boost, although bare in mind, the garrett GT35R has larger wheels so the response would be worse when compared to the HKS GT3037S.

but then again, it all depends on how much power u want, and how u want it.

    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year. 
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
    • Hi,  Just joined the forum so I could share my "fix" of this problem. Might be of use to someone. Had the same hunting at idle issue on my V36 with VQ35HR engine after swapping the engine because the original one got overheated.  While changing the engine I made the mistake of cleaning the throttle bodies and tried all the tricks i could find to do a throttle relearn with no luck. Gave in and took it to a shop and they couldn't sort it. Then took it to my local Nissan dealership and they couldn't get it to idle properly. They said I'd need to replace the throttle bodies and the ecu probably costing more than the car is worth. So I had the idea of replacing the carbon I cleaned out with a thin layer of super glue and it's back to normal idle now. Bit rough but saved the car from the wreckers 🤣
    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
