Wabte to post this in sa section as I know that laws can change state to state.

I have my boost gauge mounted where my side air bet used to be as is common, I believe this is illegal?

If I had it mounted in the 2nd DIN spot under the cd player, is this legal? Can u have say boost- temp- oil in a din spot and be legal? Or is it for some reason the gauges themselves?

Basically you can't legally mount them anywhere where a) your head is likely to impact in the case of a collision, b) your passenger(s) head is likely to impact in the case of a collision, or c) anywhere you or your passenger(s) head is unlikely to impact in case of a collision.

So basically, air vents and din pockets are fine. Defi do a pretty sweet single din sized triple cluster. Anywhere on the crash pad, around the steering wheel, or bafflingly enough, on the A pillar, not legal... Unless factory fitted, in the case of JDM S15's.

I have a great deal of trouble seeing why it would be. Cop might say it, Regency guy will likely laugh at it. I have my water temp gauge on top of my steering column, and my boost gauge in front of my cluster, neither block the speedo, inspector at Regency looked right at them, at proceeded to ask me about my Pivot water temp gauge, and where he could get one.

A-Pillar in corner is Legal. As long as your head can't hit it - was told this straight out at regency & cop-shop with the 'basketball' ideology - if the basketball (being your head) could fit between the steering wheel and A-Pillar and reach the gauge then it's illegal. But tucked in the corner is fine given it is secured properly.

allways wondered with the A pillar that it could not be above the steering wheel which makes sense. but why in this day and age can people put GPS devices and other things anywhere on windscreen A pillar etc and get away with it. most time they block part of the view out of the screen and not fitted as well as guages.

seems two differant rules. someone needs to make a good guage set up that looks like GPS devices:)

Vic banned gps and phone mounts on windshield last year so its a matter of time before that happens here , ipod or phone using bluetooth sender can do it now on obd2 cars you can read just about everything off ecu

double din pockets for gauges are piss easy to make , i cut my cig lighter and ashtray off in back and embeded guages flush in carbon and waterclear epoxy , took the guages apart and mounted the guts behind the facia of carbon , super thin mounted that way and boost gauge and a few other items in the dead space behind my sunroof switch , same way only rebuild the roof panel to a cave instead of flat so its flush and not in crash zone for my nose lol

before my boost gauge was on apillar tucked all the way back , police never even looked at it but i didnt like it there , airvent blocking isnt smart kiss off demisting side glass and if your in a accident because of that your in big trouble ( my mate hit a lady by having fogged side windows so it can happen ?)

Funny you say the cops never looked at yours on the a piller....

I had one in my last 33 GTR on the a pillar. and the cop that pulled me over said i had to move it or it would be a defect etc.

I asked him why and he said its cos you could hit your head on it in an accident. I then showed him by shoving my head between the steering wheel and the glass that my head wouldnt fit to hit it, plus the fact i have an air bag in my steering wheel but he didnt care.

So A pillar depending on the cop, what day of the week it is and if all the planets are alligned can be a defect

Velcro/ double sided tape them. I went straight through cause mind were velcro'd to the dash so in a accident they would come off.

When I got done a couple months back, the copper told me to remove my boost guage which was on the dash above the centre air vents using double sided tape. I asked him directly about the Velcro thing and he said it wasn't true. Shows how much they actually know.

Yeah my car came with greddy a pillar mount , many rbt checks over a year before i got rid of it and police sitting next to me in traffic no comments at all , but its not legal ( even if you see it all the time in magazines !!) really if you walk into a car shop with performance products more then half wouldnt be legal for use per ADR rules in "adelaide" and you dont normally see disclaimers about legality in shops or dealerships i guess they assume the public knows ADR rules off the top of there head ??? lets just cut to the chase defecting cars makes millions of dollars a year here because most people cant afford to contest the laws!! a Suspected defect is a catch all that can get every car on the road ?

easy money for the state !!

my car doesnt leak a drop but somehow every car park is like the oil tanker split open before you got to the shop parking lot ? Bet you dont see those cars at regency ?

Really its additional income for the state , most of the people i know have engine bays you could eat off and check the car top to bottom often

How often do daily drivers get that kinda care ?

The amount of money made by car companies and aftermarket parts is huge and without it the economy would be much worse off ,

welcome to the nanny state

Bend over and grab your ankles for a fisting

My gtt tv /gps is above the dashline ? and so is the MFD on gtr , bmw nav unit etc

Its more about crash zone and blocking view

but look at some of the new cars dashboards theyre not the best for a face plant either

my old work car new style camry had a radio bezel that glared so bad without a dimmer at night the trip to broken hill in the dark i had to cover it with a towel to see outside !!! the dimmer only did the cluster not radio , even with the radio off it still lit up around it bad and bounced off the window

seems safe

current cop car setup

BUT this isnt the usual "how shit are cops" thread, i actually respect them and try my best to do the right thing and keep things legal, its just so hard to pin down what is legal and safe according to some authorities.

im happy to spend the money and have things done professionally and properly, just need to know what im actually supposed to do

(appart from just do nothing)

Just beware " most shops wont install it legally or even properly " they just want the cash , do your homework by asking around here etc

And read the defect thread to see the vast array of items they pick on

Dont drive like a muppet and you should be right

Its a boost gauge on the street , your boost shouldnt change much if the car is stockish so its more of a wank factor and a casual check now and then the boost isnt creeping into danger zone

hey i love the police "when the bust criminals for real crimes" and would be more then happy help to get the crims off the street and report crime

but from that perspective the crims get out 5 min later to re- offend by weak laws

that police car is so clean , look at a usa car with shotguns and roll cage and fiberglass pan for a backseat for easy cleanup

i heard on one of the current affair shows a truck had a big plasma and dvd in the front seat in SA

so that was a good catch for defect

Just mount logical and away from airbags and face plant zones not on dash but in dash , digital ones can be gutted and mounted just about anywhere the led fits , tiny as hell but best left to a pro to extend wires etc

Good luck end rant

    • @666DAN sorry to bring you and old thread.     I've got my de+t done and it's all running great other than 1 small issue.    Car has remained auto with the na auto and tcm, I've used a stagea ecu with. NIstune board and everything is great other than my gear selection on the dash. It illuminates park, reverse, neutral, 3rd and 2nd when selected . But nothing when in  drive or what gear your in when you pop it into tiptronic. I'm sure there is maybe 1 wire in the ecu plug I need to move to rectify this. Do ya have any ideas?     Cheers man
    • Well I recently changed my rear axles and was thinking if I bumped anything, I have been driving the car for a while now though... But it has been raining today so everything is wet under the wheel arches. Brakes feel fine and can't hear any of the metal screamers, I had a squeak coming from one of the handbrake drums but that seems to have gone away a while ago. I was going down a hill when it lit up and I did feel the abs bite for a second and question why it did it?
    • Correct. Um. I dunno. I haven't cared enough about the way that the NA cars work to know for sure. But..... The 33/34 turbo manual cars have an electronic speed sensor in the gearbox that outputs a +/- (ie, sawtooth AC) voltage signal. That is connected to the speedo. The speedo then outputs a 0-5v square wave (ie, PWM) signal that the ECU (and any other CU on the bus) sees. The speed sensor is NOT directly connected to the ECU. So here's the problem. Your new ECU expects to see the PWM signal, but must somehow be getting a direct signal from the diff speed sensor. Which would suggest that the wiring of the NA car is not the same as the turbo cars. I think you will need to spend some time with (hopefully the wiring diagram for the car) and a multimeter to see what is connected to what. Then, presuming I am correct**, you would then want to separate the ECU speed signal input from the rest of the car's wiring, and probably either buy a speed signal converter, or build one using an arduino (or similar). That would take in the speed sensor signal and output a scaled (and suitably rearranged) signal for the ECU. ** We shouldn't presume that I am correct here, because there might be something else crazy going on. I don't think you could convert the speedo to be fed from the gearbox sensor, because the pulse rate from that sensor is probably different to the diff sensor and then the speedo would read wrongly. And this also wouldn't fix the ECU's problem either, because the ECU doesn't want to see the gearbox signal direct either (assuming that they are all on the same wiring, for some odd NA related reason, see above caveat!) Does this help? Probably not. Can you make it work? Almost certainly. With the above work. You should buy a handheld oscilloscope from Aliexpress so that you can view these signals directly. Connect up the probes and drive the car. Show photos of the screen when drving at known speeds and connected to different places, and we'll see what we can learn about it.
    • Assuming your brake pads are not worn right down, I'd add a little brake fluid. Is there any sign of a brake fluid leak?
    • Hello all,  I need of some help. On my drive home my handbrake light lit up and started flashing. When I got home I checked my handbrake sensor under the centre console and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. I have scanned my car via the consult port, no codes shown. Checked my brake fluid as well which is half full. Tried unplugging the brake master but it didn't change anything. Thoughts on what it could be? The master float doesn't seem to be stuck. My car is an 1998 ER34 sedan GT. No hicas but has ABS Photos below 👇🏾
