short story.

r32 gts

stock rb20

no cat

dad watched me drive away from the house the other day and when i got home he said there was some black smoke

coming from the exhaust (didnt say how much, but he was like.."you been reving the guts out of it? and i was like umm no more than usual. i usually drive pretty casually reving to no more than 4k..with the occasional 1 gear limiter to 2nd.

anywho he told me to get a compression test and check the oil so on.

basically before i go get a mechanic to tell me theres something wrong for the sake of it.

could the black smoke just be because i have no catalytic converter?

the car seems to be driving fine, as of late i think either the spark plugs or the coil pack needs to be changed as every now and then as i have some boost hesitation.

any help much appreciated

yeah a little black smoke quite often doesnt mean much at all. unless it really was spewing it out with vigour i wouldn't worry about it. keep in mind the car is ~20 yrs old so its no spring chicken and sometimes it will show its age in more ways than one.

when the smoke is blue thats when you should start getting concerned.

was the engine cold when you left the driveway? if so the smoke may be due to the engine running rich having been on the ecu cold start program

The amount of fuel smoke my stagea used to blow could have powered a Prius.. Gtr is not much better at times either, fuel smoke, esspecially when the engine is cold (ie first 5-10 mins if it is -10 or 40) is not a bad thing. Safer for the engine to be rich than lean.

True, but also keep in mind that a rich running engine will have less power and will use more fuel than if it has a correct A/F ratio.

. Safer for the engine to be rich than lean.

Depends on just how rich though.

I had mine detonate to buggery when the O2 sensor on the dyno was faulty. Was reading almost 2AFR out. Detonation when running rich looks scary from the exhaust end.

Figured this out when we maxxed out 555cc Nismo injectors on an RB25 running 17psi with a GT30. lol.

    • Sorry to hear your HFM BM57 was faulty,  did you contact HFM I would hope they would be at least grateful for the information if there was some sort of manufacturing fault, you would hope they would be sympathetic even if your item was 2 years old if it had never been fitted. May I ask where it leaked from ?
    • Cats are called Bella, and Donna...  Like that poisonous plant And I remember your 2 monsters, I remember making a little bit of wee when you let them out... LOL I have already installed cat doors into the laundry where their kitty litter is, and the sun room, apart from the cat doors there's not going to be any permanent mounted stuff on the interior walls (interior doors are cheap and easy to replace) I will get a outdoor cat cage thingie once I finish the landscaping out back... https://catnip.com.au/ The only off limit areas are the main bedroom and the gym room....but, currently the cats are curled up in bed, in the main bedroom with the Mrs.....LOL, the off limits for the kittens to the main bedroom lasted about 5 minutes with Jackie I currently only have 1 free standing huge cat tree multiple level scratching post thingie in the lounge room, but, I will be getting another one soon now that I'm happy with the furniture layout in the back room and have a perfect spot for it
    • All of this is making it seem clear that running the Coppermix twin was definitely the way to go, especially in hindsight with how insane tariffs have gotten and the strength of the USD vs yen at the time.
    • That sounds like no chance of even importing one for road registering then Now I see why Duncan wants to check LHD rules for Targa...   I wonder how "bolt in" the AWD would be if you got one imported from the US and swapped it to an AUD one
    • Not to mention they drive like a bucket of bolts! yuck!
