Idle Hunting Problem. No Fuel Filter On R33 The Problem?.....

Recommended Posts

So my skyline apparently does not have a fuel filter and it looks like it has been modded to bypass a filter. It has been giving me idle problems over the past few months when the engine gets warm and have yet found a solution to this day... so i was wondering could this be the problem?? i cleaned the throttle body, cleaned the idle sensor, and cleaned the map flow sensor as well as re-soldering the joints inside & coil packs are good. Any advice would be appreciated guys. May need a oil change but have not gotten around to it.

It’s an r33 s2 1996 looks like it had a engine swap for a s1 engine no idea what year though.

Does it have stock ECU? Try an ECU reset and see if that helps.

No fuel filter sounds a little strange. Might wanna put some injector cleaner through it too.

It looks like the stock ecu to the engine (Rb25det) but it was hard wired to the original wire loom in the car instead of changing the whole thing out. Ill get some injector cleaner and throw it in my tank it and try a ecu reset over the weekend. It seems to mostly give trouble when its low on gas after i filled the tank the other day its been fine to drive home and work but its only a 5min trip so ill have to try a little longer trip after the weekend.

Injector cleaner is a waste of money, does nothing. If your having trouble with 1/4 left in the tank, then you might have an aftermarket fuel pump (walbro, bosch etc), they rarely get installed correctly and this is what always happens.

  • 2 weeks later...

Same Scenario with my car! but no probs with idle

I got s2 type m r33 and engine i just got put in had only 88K on clock ( straight from the half cut) its a S1 engine had to do all the loom changes , engine etc etc. took abt 6 weeks to complete!

should i put a fuel filter or just leave it ?

    • Hope you aren't too sore after that one, might take a day or 2 to notice yet and I guess it is a loooooong drive home. On the bright side, tube frame front end is a thing at superlap, right?

    • The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same. There are plenty of discussions on here about this issue from al the many years of people wanting a cheap/accessible option. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/ https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/
    • Yeah dunno why johhny posted that here with no context, just post on FB/insta bro where he put it up?  Laine had an off at T4 during Thurs prac, he's ok, car is less than perfect, they are done for the weekend, he can fill in the rest. Bando also binned it like 100m up the road.
    • I feel there must have been a FB/insta post and the weekend did not start well at all I hope everyone is all okay
