G'day

i dont want you fellas to hate me if this has been discussed before, but i have a Rb25-S13 with a RB20 gearbox now i live in the states, unfortunatelly rb parts are very hard and spennnsive to find here, my buddys got a.RB26 gearbox laying around and i would really like.your imput and advise on HOW and IF i can use that gearbox in my car seeing that the RB25's go for.over $1200 i know you guys are.experts on this matters and i.can probably pick up the 26GBx off my mate for a fraction of the price.

in advance i thank you sooo much and I appreciate the help...

Yeah....but......there is work involved. The "fraction of the price" that you pay for the gearbox is just the start. By the time you get it in the car you'd probably be happier with the easy option of just buying a 25 box. It's not as though RB25 turbo boxes are any cheaper here in AU. You want to be paying about that mush $$ for a good one here as well.

If you are still interested/determined and you were to search, you would find the work involved has been discussed on here before.

cheers

yes i know theres work to be done but i dont know exactly what to do

the gtr gearbox is from a R32GTR if that makes a difference ,sorry i havent found where the info is

And actually the gtr gearboxes here go for $150-300 that's a good price if you ask me , and if they're as strong as the rb25t gbox , I'm willing to go that route I mean not allot of people know that here .

Cheers

26 boxes are essentially RB25 boxes dolled up into 4wd format. To change one back to RWD you need to find yourself a RWD mainshaft, extension housing, speedo setup, i'd probably throw a bearing and synchro kit through it aswell. Including labour you'd be looking at around 2k mark plus.

I'd get a 25 box personally, or you could get a 300zx box or one of the big pathfinder boxes over there.

S@ turboed: hmmm i see , my buddy has a rb25 but 3rd gear was literraly shaved off by him in his RB26 mx5 when he was making over 650hp , would i be able to use 3rd gear from the gtr box? on the 300zx do i just change the front housing from my rb box on there?

yeah you could use the guts out of his yours and into his, and you could swap the bellhousings over. Again, if you aren't mechanically minded and will be paying someone to do the job for you, the cost of the exercise will blow out to more than the price of a 25 box

ok so 3rd gear is the same in both gboxes ? and i can swap them? i am mechanically inclined i rebuilt my RB but i learned it from my buddy thats got both gboxes if i can do that then ill tell him ill buy the 25 and put the gear in from the GTR gbox .......

    • Yeah, plenty of air flow, there is a dedicated path that feeds the air in to the OEM intake tube behind the bumper As for a "tangible effect", maybe, but getting the pod/intake air out of the hot engine bay is worth it psychologically to me, even if it gives no performance difference, so the tangible effect in my Lizard brain saysss yessss  In the end, to me a tangible effect isn't always about performance, sometimes it a sound or a look, or even a...... feeling  Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga
    • yeah first and reverse is where you will find clutch release issues (whether hydraulic or mechanical) because the difference in revs required is the highest there; particularly changing down from 2nd to 1st when still moving. To be clearer though, it is possible that the clutch release bearing is the wrong height. This is less likely than a hydraulic issue but it is not unheard of when you are mixing and matching

    • Hi all, Restoring r33 series 1 rb25det. All the heater hoses were on their way out, have replaced them and put it all back together. After testing I noticed a small leak from behind the head on the actual metal water line to the turbo when cars warm. I tried running a longer hose over it but it kept leaking...   I am about to take the (stock) manifold off again😔 to change the water line does any one have any lines they recommend? I was looking at Aeroflow Turbo Oil & Water Line Set but not sure what everyone else recommends. Car is completely stock but want to upgrade turbo eventually. it looks like ill have to disconnect a lot just to replace these lines so if there's anything else recommended to do please let me know. Thank you in advance!
    • From memory, on the R33 GTSt at least, while everyone says "It's not adjustable", I found when I changed clutches in mine, it just needed a small adjustment on the rod length. But be very wary here, as you could end up trying to push the pushrod in the master too far, or blowing out the slave.   Most likely though, if the master/slave isn't bypassing internally or leaking out, then the throw out is the wrong height compared to the fingers on the clutch, so when it moves to disengage the clutch, it isn't 100% disengaged. You can check part of this out too by jacking the car up, having the engine running, put your foot on the clutch and try to engage 1st gear. If it goes in pretty easy (Compared to the ground) and/or the wheels start turning a fair bit and it takes a bit too much brake pedal to bring them back to a stop, this is likely the issue.  I'm not sure if you can adjust the height of the forks etc in these though, it's been that long since I've touched any RB gearbox.
